The luminescence properties of ZnO nanopowders

2007

Pure and Al3+ doped ZnO nanopowders were studied by means of time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy. The powders were synthesized by hydrothermal and plasma methods. These powders were used as a raw material for vaporization-condensation process inside the Solar reactor. The commercially available ZnO nanopowder was studied for a comparison. Exciton to defect band luminescence intensity ratio was estimated in different types of ZnO nanopowders. It was found that nanopowders with whiskers morphology show superlinear luminescence intensity depending on excitation density. The observed effect depends on the average nanoparticle size and on the powder morphology.

Nanoindentation and photoluminescence characterization of ZnO thin films and single crystals

2010

In this work an optical and micromechanical properties of ZnO films deposited on glass by simple method based on the mechanoactivated oxidation have been investigated and compared with those of bulk ZnO single crystal and commercial ZnO films. Results showed that investigated ZnO films have stable high adhesion with glass and can form grained structure with hardness 8–10 GPa or whiskers nanostructure with high hardness 18–20 GPa. Young’s modulus is in range from 80 to 120 GPa. Optical properties of obtained ZnO films with whiskers structure are typical for transparent high quality ZnO single crystal. These coatings also exhibit a photo-electric response which reflects on the change in resis…

WEAR PERFORMANCE OF CERAMIC CUTTING-TOOL MATERIALS WHEN CUTTING STEEL

1991

Abstract Some test cycles have been carried out in continuous cutting conditions, employing cutting parameters (feed, depth of cut and cutting speed) chosen following experimental planes and suitable test fields. The wear tests have been carried out on AISI 1040 steel with cutting speeds from 5m/sec to 11m/sec. The silicon nitride, sintered carbide, cubic boron nitride and alumina reinforced with SiC whiskers inserts, have shown, at each assigned cutting parameter, poor wear resistance when cutting steel. Alumina and alumina in submicron grain, which has been toughened by ZrO2 phase transformation, and the oxide-based alumina, have been the better wear resistance. The mixed based alumina ha…

Effect of Chitin Whiskers on the Molecular Dynamics of Carrageenan-Based Nanocomposites

2019

[EN] Films of carrageenan (KC) and glycerol (g) with different contents of chitin nanowhiskers (CHW) were prepared by a solution casting process. The molecular dynamics of pure carrageenan (KC), carrageenan/glycerol (KCg) and KCg with different quantities of CHWs as a filler was studied using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. The analysis of the CHW effect on the molecular mobility at the glass transition, T-g, indicates that non-attractive intermolecular interactions between KCg and CHW occur. The fragility index increased upon CHW incorporation, due to a reduction in the polymer chains mobility produced by the CHW confinement of the KCg network. The apparent activation energy associated…

Wear rates and wear mechanisms of alumina-based tools cutting steel at a low cutting speed

1997

Abstract Three ceramic insert materials, zirconia-toughened alumina (Al 2 O 3 –7vol%ZrO 2 ), mixed-based alumina (Al 2 O 3 –TiN–TiC–ZrO 2 ) and alumina reinforced with SiC whiskers (Al 2 O 3 –SiC w ), were used to cut AISI 1040 steel at 3.9 m s −1 . In addition, a traditional grade P10 insert (WC–TiC–Co) was tested. The lifetimes, according to KT/KM and VB B criteria, were determined using a profilometer and by image processing. The worn zones were observed with scanning electron microscopy techniques. Adhesion and plastic deformation were dominant wear mechanisms in zirconia-toughened alumina, mixed-based alumina and sintered carbide P10, both in the craters and in the cutting edges. As we…

Bi-2212 and Y123 highly curved single-crystal-like objects: whiskers, bows and ring-like structures

2012

High-temperature superconducting objects of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 and Y Ba2Cu3O7 highly curved in the ab-plane, such as curved/kinked whiskers, bows and ring-like structures, were obtained within a solid?liquid?solid (SLS) grass-like growth mechanism. As-grown objects are crystals with three-dimensional epitaxy similar to conventional single crystals: they can be viewed as crystal parts ?cut? from a conventional rectangular crystal. Between our curved objects and conventional crystals, whiskers or thin films there are some differences in the superconducting properties induced only by the shape factors and no new physics is observed. Some details of the growth mechanism are discussed, emphasizing cu…

Ceramic materials wear mechanisms when cutting nickel-based alloys

1999

Abstract In this paper the performances of some commercial ceramic inserts when cutting AISI 310 steel are investigated and compared to those of a traditional carbide based tool. The most important wear mechanism in the ceramic inserts is related to the segmented edges of the chips that abrade a notch at the end of the cut zone. Alumina–zirconia inserts are very sensitive to this kind of wear, whereas tools made of Sialon and alumina with SiC whiskers exhibit slightly better performances despite the concomitant chemical wear mechanisms.

Obtaining of nanostructured ZnO coatings using mechanoactivated oxidation

2007

The concept to use nanostructured state of metal at the instant of destruction in air environment was used to obtain nanostructured Zn-ZnO coatings on glass and quartz by mechanical method. Subsequent annealing in the ambient atmosphere, annealing in vacuum and irradiation with 532-nm YAG:Nd laser were used to obtain completely oxidized, transparent ZnO coatings. The saturated with oxygen nanostructured coatings were transformed into nanostructured ZnO coatings after annealing above 773K or irradiation with laser (allowing to reach 673K) in ambient atmosphere. AFM and SEM images show that after annealing ZnO coatings have multi-shaped structure. The formation of ZnO need-like whiskers (d = …

The Luminescence Properties of ZnO:Al Nanopowders Obtained by Sol-gel, Plasma and Vaporization-Condensation Methods

2007

ZnO nanocrystals were synthesized and characterized by XRD and SEM methods. The luminescence spectra and decay kinetics were studied under pulsed laser excitation (266 nm, 8 ns). ZnO and ZnO:Al powders were prepared by sol-gel and plasma chemical synthesis. These powders were used as a raw material for the SPVD (Solar Physical Vapour Deposition) process. In this way, the vaporisation-condensation phenomenon (VC) led to the formation of ZnO whiskers and nanopowders. The luminescence properties of the VC nanopowders were studied and compared to those displayed by the raw material. The Al dopant, present in the raw powders as a solid solution and ZnAl2O4 precipitates, was only present as Al io…

Properties of ZnO coatings obtained by mechanoactivated oxidation

2009

In this work a new method based on the mechanoactivated oxidation has been applied for obtaining thin nanostructured transparent ZnO coatings on glass. Zn has been transferred onto a glass substrate at room temperature using a quickly rotating steel wire brush. Afterwards by subsequent annealing it is modified into a transparent ZnO coating. The temperature range in which formation of the needle-like (whiskers) structure and transition to the fine-grained structure occurs has been determined. The interrelation between physical properties and the change of microstructure of the ZnO coatings has been shown.
