The design of measurement-based underwater acoustic channel simulators using the INLSA algorithm

2015

This paper utilizes the iterative nonlinear least square approximation (INLSA) algorithm for designing measurement-based wideband shallow underwater acoustic (UWA) channel simulators. Measurement-based channel simulators are essential for the test, optimization, and performance analysis of UWA communication systems. The aim is to fit the time-variant channel impulse response (TVCIR) of the simulation model to that of the measured UWA channel. The performance of the designed UWA channel simulator is assessed by comparing the time-frequency correlation function (TFCF), the power delay profile (PDP), and the probability density function (PDF) of the channel envelope with the corresponding quan…

Design of Measurement-Based Stochastic Wideband MIMO Channel Simulators

2009

In this paper, we propose a method for designing measurement-based stochastic models for simulating wideband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless channels. The proposed method allows synthesizing channel transfer functions with the spatial-temporal-frequency correlation properties approximating those of real-world radio channels. The parameters of a channel simulator are determined by fitting the space-timefrequency cross-correlation matrix of the simulation model to the estimated space-time-frequency cross-correlation matrix of a physical channel. For this purpose, an iterative parameter computation algorithm has been developed. The proposed design method is verified by creating …

A circularly polarized wideband high gain patch antenna for wireless power transfer

2018

This article deals with a microstrip patch antenna working at 868 MHz, suitable for the radio frequency wireless power transfer and energy harvesting applications. The proposed monolithic antenna is compact, lightweight and it is printed on a thick substrate in order to maximize the total gain in the broadside direction. The antenna radiates at 868 MHz with a fractional impedance bandwidth of 5% and it shows a gain of 4.14 dB.

Joint Distribution of Polarization-Multiplexed UWB and WiMAX Radio in PON

2009

[EN] In this paper, the feasibility of the joint distribution of ultra-wideband (UWB) and WIMAX wireless using polarization multiplexing as a coexistence technique is proposed and experimentally demonstrated within the framework of passive optical networks (PON). Four single- and orthogonal-polarization multiplexing schemes are studied targeting to reduce the mutual interference when UWB and WiMAX are distributed jointly through standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) without transmission impairments compensation techniques and amplification. Experimental results indicate successful transmission up to 25 km, in SSMF exceeding the range in typical PON deployments. The radio link penalty introduced…

Performance Enhancement of Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) with Receive Diversity

2007

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effect of receive diversity on multimedia broadcast multicast service (MBMS) performance in wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) networks. In addition to time diversity provided by long interleaving and receive diversity provided by multiple receive antennas, 3GPP release 6 specifications for MBMS introduce two macro diversity schemes: soft and selective combining. Diversity techniques are introduced in order to improve the MBMS performance. Improvements help especially the cell edge MBMS users who suffer most from the fading channel conditions. As receive diversity is one of the most efficient diversity techniques this paper examines the s…

Ultrasonic detection by photo-EMF sensor and by wideband air-coupled transducer

2004

Two non-contact remote ultrasonic detection systems are compared. The first consists of a continuous wave (CW) Nd:YVO4 laser operating at 532 nm used in conjunction with a photo-induced electromotive-force (EMF) sensor. The second system employs an air-coupled capacitance transducer that has a bandwidth from 100 kHz up to 2 MHz. Both systems exhibit higher sensitivity to out-of-plane than in-plane measurements of stress wave signals. Ultrasound generation is carried out by an Nd:YAG pulsed laser at 532 nm in the thermoelastic regime in a 1.6 mm aluminum plate. A0 Lamb mode is generated at frequency-thickness product with strong out-of-plane displacements. Ultrasonic waveforms acquired are r…

Wideband tuning of four-wave mixing in solid-core liquid-filled photonic crystal fibers

2016

We present an experimental study of parametric four-wave mixing generation in photonic crystal fibers that have been infiltrated with ethanol. A silica photonic crystal fiber was designed to have the proper dispersion properties after ethanol infiltration for the generation of widely spaced four-wave mixing (FWM) bands under 1064 nm pumping. We demonstrate that the FWM bands can be tuned in a wide wavelength range through the thermo-optic effect. Band shifts of 175 and over 500 nm for the signal and idler bands, respectively, are reported. The reported results can be of interest in many applications, such as CARS microscopy.

Wideband impedance matrix representation of passive waveguide components based on cascaded planar junctions

2009

[1] A very efficient technique for the full-wave analysis of passive waveguide components, composed of the cascade connection of planar junctions, is presented. This novel technique provides the wideband generalized impedance matrix representation of the whole structure in the form of pole expansions, thus extracting the most expensive computations from the frequency loop. For this purpose, the structure is segmented into planar junctions and uniform waveguide sections, which are characterized in terms of wideband impedance matrices. Then, an efficient iterative algorithm for combining such matrices, and finally providing the wideband generalized impedance matrix of the complete structure, …

An improved iterative nonlinear least square approximation method for the design of measurement-based wideband mobile radio channel simulators

2011

This paper deals with the design of measurement-based simulation models for wideband single-input single-output (SISO) mobile radio channels. We present an improved version of the iterative nonlinear least square approximation (INLSA) method for computing the parameters of measurement-based simulation models. The proposed method aims to fit the temporal-frequency correlation function (TFCF) of the simulation model to that of the measured channel. Unlike the original INLSA method, the proposed approach provides a unique optimal set of estimated model parameters. The proposed iterative procedure involves numerical optimization techniques to determine a set of parameters that minimizes the Euc…

A wideband multiple-cluster MIMO mobile-to-mobile channel model based on the geometrical street model

2008

In this paper, we extend the geometrical street multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) mobile-to-mobile (M2M) channel model with respect to multiple clusters of scatterers as well as to frequency selectivity. The statistical properties of the proposed reference model are studied. Analytical solutions are provided for the three-dimensional (3D) space-time cross-correlation function (CCF), the temporal autocorrelation function (ACF), the 2D space CCF, and the frequency correlation function (FCF). The correlation properties are studied under the assumption of non-isotropic scattering conditions. The proposed reference model can be used as a starting point for the derivation of a wideband MIMO M…
