1986
The paper is based on empirical material collected in connection with the research project ‘Way of life in the family parental awareness of parenthood, and children’s social development’. The sample consisted of 212 families with both parents and a six-year-old child. It was relatively homogeneous with regard to the educational background of the parents. Comparisons were made between groups of families which differed with regard to (1) symmetry in the division of labour, (2) socialization of children to work, and (3) the relative significance of work vs. family life to the parents. Symmetry in the division of labour was strongly reflected in the family time consumption patterns and their co…

1990
To be delivered of a child with cleft lip and palate is an extreme psychic stress factor for the mother. In coping with this, she is left to the support of the caring medical staff. Therefore, the aim of the present study was 1. to ascertain, to what extent mothers of children with cleft lip and palate are given information on the malformation, and receive emotional support by the medical staff; and 2. to determine the effect such experiences have on their ability to cope. For this purpose we developed a special questionnaire, which was completed by 154 mothers of such children. Retrospectively, a relevant part of them criticised not only the communication and the contents of information, b…
Post memory and cinematic affect in The Midwife
2017
The Second World War has proved a rich source of inspiration for fiction films worldwide. The Finnish fiction film The Midwife (Kätilö, Antti J. Jokinen, 2015) is aimed at an international audience with a story that takes place in the context of the Lapland War in Finland in 1944. The film tells of a romantic relationship between a local woman and a member of the German army, in a highly affective manner. This article argues that the film downplays elements that might have interested the national, or local, audience, and that it privileges affect over knowledge. To bring out the film’s transnational character, the article begins by analysing it in the context of national, or local, and glob…

2020
Background: In Europe, the majority of healthy women give birth at conventional obstetric units with the assistance of registered midwives. Methods: A prospective, multicentre, cross-sectional study promoted by the COST Action IS1405 was carried out at eight public hospitals in Spain and Ireland between 2016&ndash

1987
Head parameters BPD, FOD and HC and abdomen parameters ATD, APD and AC have been ascertained in a prospective cross-sectional study in 515 healthy single fetuses between 13 and 40 weeks of gestation by ultrasound. In all cases ultrasound velocity was 1540 m/sec. From these data, a growth model was achieved for each parameter and corresponding growth curves with 5%, 10%, 50%, 90% and 95% percentiles were established.
Trends in HIV sexual prevention: Attitudinal beliefs and behavioral intention in Spanish young people over the past two decades (1999-2020).
2022
Abstract Despite preventive efforts, HIV exposure is still a concern for public health. The current prevalence is related to unsafe sex, which is based on socio-cognitive variables. Therefore, information about these variables is required to verify whether the past preventive strategies have been effective and improve the future ones. However, there is not updated information to adjust future preventive interventions. For this reason, this study analyzes trends by gender in Spanish young people over the past two decades in perceived susceptibility to HIV, severity perceived to HIV, condom confidence and the intention of condom use, from 1999 to 2020. For this purpose, 11,665 Spanish young p…

Roland Glowinski: The Unconventional and Unexpected Path of a Mathematician
2009
More than 10 years have elapsed since the conference, “Computational Science for the Twentieth Century”, was held in Tours, France. The Tours event honored the 60th birthday of Roland Glowinski. The world has witnessed many changes in the last decade, but Roland and his lovely wife, Angela, seem to barely have changed at all. Indeed, they are like fine French wine or Tennessee whiskey; they improve with age. As we reflect upon the career of Roland, it is important that we not underestimate the role of Angela. Everyone knows the old saying, Beside every great man stands a great woman.
