The cork oak in the Mountains of Palermo (Italy): ecological insights from the south-eastern edge of its distribution range

2020

Abstract: The uneven presence of the cork oak (Quercus suber L.) within its distribution range is not only determined by its climatic requirements but also by specific edaphic needs. Although most of the natural populations thrive in acidic soils deriving from metamorphic or volcanic rock outcrops, some cork oak populations are found growing in soils deriving from calcareous bedrock, which are considered less suitable. We carried out a multidisciplinary investigation at the south eastern edge of the Q. suber distribution range (Mountains of Palermo, NW Sicily), including soil, floristic, and vegetation surveys, aimed at: (i) assessing the native or introduced origin of some peculiar cork oa…

Wild and the City

2019

Celebrating the aesthetic, ethical and ecological values of alleged ‘spontaneous nature’ is therefore a recurrent mandate in many projects and inspires numerous urban policies. Someone adopts this perspective as the only one possible for the ‘salvation of the cities’, marrying the reasons of the most orthodox ecology with a sometimes fideistic approach. Someone else embraces the cause of the fusion between wildness and urbanity for new opportunistic marketing operations in the global urban trade, interweaving the religion of environmental sustainability with the enhancement of biodiversity, often understood as a real capitalization. Still others, on the contrary, look at this phenomenon wit…

Designing Touchless Gestural Interactions for Public Displays In-the-Wild

2015

Public displays, typically equipped with touchscreens, are used for interactions in public spaces, such as streets or fairs. Currently low-cost visual sensing technologies, such as Kinect-like devices and high quality cameras, allow to easily implement touchless interfaces. Nevertheless, the arising interactions have not yet been fully investigated for public displays in-the-wild (i.e. in appropriate social contexts where public displays are typically deployed). Different audiences, cultures and social settings strongly affect users and their interactions. Besides gestures for public displays must be guessable to be easy to use for a wide audience. Issues like these could be solved with use…

Do we need earth jurisprudence? Looking for change in new old friends

2020

The article introduces the reader to the theory of Earth Jurisprudence through an analysis of the writings of Thomas Berry, Cormac Cullinan and Peter Burdon. After looking at the main revisions that the scholars of Earth Jurisprudence propose to the theory of law, the article recognizes the fact that they all move in the direction of natural law theories and questions the opportunity to take this path in order to change the relationship between human law and the environment.

A sample of the entry of the "Vocabolario-atlante delle pratiche…

Dissection of the structure-forming activity from the structure-guiding activity of silicatein: a biomimetic molecular approach to print optical fibe…

2020

Silicateins, a group of proteins forming the proteinaceous axial filaments of the inorganic biosilica spicules of the siliceous sponges, are unique in their dual function to exhibit both structure-guiding (providing the structural platform for the biosilica product) and structure-forming activities (enzymatic function: biosilica synthesis from ortho-silicate). The primary translation product of the silicatein gene comprises a signal peptide, a pro-peptide and, separated by an autocatalytic cleavage site glutamine/aspartic acid [Q/D], the sequence of the mature silicatein protein. In order to dissect the biocatalytic, structure-forming activity of silicatein from its structure-guiding functi…
