2015

In this paper, smart grids based on Renewable Energy Sources are addressed. An Italian case study which has been developed in the frame of the research project i-NEXT (Innovation for green Energy and eXchange in Transportation) is presented. Storage elements are included. Electric and fuel cell powered vehicles' charging stations are here included as local loads. In this paper, power management algorithms and the control logic are described. The control subsystem aims at an efficient management of the involved renewable energy sources avoiding faults in the power system and ensuring a fully functional supply of local loads. A “Service Center” software collecting data from renewable sources,…

Mini Wind Plant to Power Telecommunication Systems: A Case Study in Sicily

2012

The ever increasing problems related to air pollution and the difficulties for power lines to reach inaccessible areas are pushing to find new solutions for powering telecommunications equipments (TLC). The renewable energy systems, although relatively expensive, have the required characteristics. The purpose of this work is to find a solution based on a low power wind turbine to serve a real telecommunication site located near Palermo, the main city of Sicily (Italy).

Data-driven design of robust fault detection system for wind turbines

2014

Abstract In this paper, a robust data-driven fault detection approach is proposed with application to a wind turbine benchmark. The main challenges of the wind turbine fault detection lie in its nonlinearity, unknown disturbances as well as significant measurement noise. To overcome these difficulties, a data-driven fault detection scheme is proposed with robust residual generators directly constructed from available process data. A performance index and an optimization criterion are proposed to achieve the robustness of the residual signals related to the disturbances. For the residual evaluation, a proper evaluation approach as well as a suitable decision logic is given to make a correct …

Impact of Building Layouts on Wind Turbine Power Output in the Built Environment: A Case Study of Tsu City

2014

In city planning, it is important to consider the future growth of renewable energy systems in the built environment. Wind speed analysis in the built environment is very important for analysing the wind turbine performance installed in the built environment. In this work, building topologies / layouts in Tsu city are considered for investing the wind speed distributions and directions. Wind speed profile in the built environment are developed by using CFD-ACE+. This work focusses on the analysis of the wind speed directions and distribution characteristics for finding out the proper location of the wind turbines in the built environment. The wind speed profiles and their directions and win…

Local DoS applications with micro wind generation systems

2015

In this paper a wind electrical power generation system for Distributed on Site (DoS) applications is proposed. This system was developed and conceived in order to guarantee simple installation, use and service, obtaining a product that can be easily industrialized and put into the market with limited costs. The field of application of such an electrical generation system is addressed towards domestic or at the most toward condominium applications concerning moreover the opportunity of working in addition to combined photovoltaic and solar-thermal systems to enhance the renewable energy generation at house level (DoS). The proposed system has its hot spot in the blades shape, in the wind fl…

Design of a grid connected inverter for sustainable small wind farms

2016

The actual definition of sustainability is nowadays widely accepted. It provides a very general indication on what it is, but it reveals unable to assert how it should be reached. However, if one considers the multiplicity of human activities that have led to talk of real process of human settlement on the environment, it is then understood how it is close to the particular mankind activities. Then the task of providing a guidance on what to do within the sustainability concept is delegated case by case. In this paper, with reference to wind renewable source, The Authors give some indications in the design of a voltage source inverters aimed to optimal use of the wind source. In particular …

A Model-Based Control Strategy for Wind Turbines with Asynchronous Generator

2007

In this paper a model based control methodology is described with reference to a wind turbine for production of alternative energy. The mathematical model of a 600 kW wind turbine is taken into account assuming a well defined profile of the rotor blades. A set of reference angular speeds of the asynchronous generator and a set of reference pitch angles of the blade wind turbine are obtained in order to maximize the extracted wind power and to reach equilibrium conditions between the wind-generated torque and the electric torque of the generator. Finally a PID model based controller is designed and then tested by means of simulation experiments.

Wind Turbine Generation System With Optimized DC-Link Design and Control

2013

This paper presents an optimized capacitance design for the dc link of a back-to-back converter for wind turbine power generation. The design method combines switching ripple and dynamic specifications to give the smallest possible dc-link capacitance and the required proportional-integral compensator for the voltage regulation. Furthermore, a novel concept to globally manage the on/off switching of back-to-back power subconverters, based on a finite-state machine, is presented. The proposed management system keeps control of the dc-link voltage for proper operation of both subconverters regardless of wind or grid conditions.

GA-ANN for Short-Term Wind Energy Prediction

2011

Wind turbine power output is totally intermittent in the nature. For grid connected wind turbine generators, power system operators (transmission system operators) need reliable and robust wind power forecasting system. Rapid changes in the wind generation relative to the load require proper energy management system to maintain the power system stability and of course to balance the power generation, frequency, voltage regulation within the statutory limits. Accurate wind energy forecasting helps the power system transmission system operators in anticipating rapid changes in wind turbine power output with respect to load and helps in making decision not only for optimum energy management bu…

Wind Turbine Mechanical Characteristics and Grid Parameters Influence on the Transient Voltage Stability of a Fixed Speed Wind Turbine

2008

This paper describes the effect of wind turbine mechanical characteristic of construction and grid parameters on the transient voltage stability of a fixed speed wind turbine (FSWT) connected to a simple grid. The model of FSWT has been developed in Matlab/Simulink. Using this model, a three-phase fault is applied close to the wind turbine (WT) and cleared by disconnecting the faulted line. The effects of mechanical construction of WT and of grid parameters on the voltage stability of this simple case are evaluated and discussed. The considered parameters are the inertia coefficient of the WT, the short-circuit power at the connection bus, the hub-generator resonant frequency, the wind spee…
