A battery of toxicity tests as indicators of decontamination in composting oily waste.

2000

Heterogeneous oily waste from an old dumping site was composted in three windrows constructed from different proportions of waste, sewage sludge, and bark. The objectives of this pilot study were to examine the usefulness of composting as a treatment method for this particular waste and to study decontamination in the composting process by using a battery of toxicity tests. Five samples from the windrow having intermediate oil concentrations were tested with toxicity tests based on microbes (Pseudomonas putida growth inhibition test, ToxiChromotest, MetPLATE, and three different modifications of a luminescent bacterial test), enzyme inhibition (reverse electron transport), plants (duckweed …

Overlapped moving windows followed by principal component analysis to extract information from chromatograms and application to classification analys…

2015

Variable generation from chromatograms is conveniently accomplished using unsupervised rather than manual techniques. With unsupervised techniques, there is no need for selecting a few peaks for manual integration and valuable information is quickly and efficiently collected. The generation of variables can be performed by using either peak searching or moving window (MW) strategies. With a MW approach, the peaks are ignored and many variables, only part of them carrying information, are generated. Thus, variable generation by MWs should be followed by data compression to generate the variables to be further used for classification or quantitation purposes. In this work, unsupervised proces…

Stochastic models for wind speed forecasting

2011

Abstract This paper is concerned with the problem of developing a general class of stochastic models for hourly average wind speed time series. The proposed approach has been applied to the time series recorded during 4 years in two sites of Sicily, a region of Italy, and it has attained valuable results in terms both of modelling and forecasting. Moreover, the 24 h predictions obtained employing only 1-month time series are quite similar to those provided by a feed-forward artificial neural network trained on 2 years data.

A study on recovering the cloud top-height from infra-red video sequences

2004

In this paper we present some preliminary results on an opticalfow based technique aimed at recovering the cloud-top height from infra-red image sequences. The recovery of the cloud-top height from satellite infra-red images is an important topic in meteorological studies, and is traditionally based on the analysis of the temperature maps. In this work we explore the feasibility for this problem of a technique based on a robust multi-resolution opticalfow algorithm. The robustness is achieved adopting a Least Median of Squares paradigm. The algorithm has been tested on semi-synthetic data (i.e. real data that have been synthetically warped in order to have a reliable ground truth for the mo…

Riming of Graupel: Wind Tunnel Investigations of Collection Kernels and Growth Regimes

2009

Abstract Laboratory experiments were carried out in the vertical wind tunnel in Mainz, Germany, to study the collision coalescence growth of single spherical ice particles having initial radii between 290 and 380 μm while they were freely floated in a laminar flow containing a cloud of supercooled droplets with radii between 10 and 20 μm. The experiments were performed in a temperature range between −8 and −12°C, where riming proceeds in the atmosphere, and with cloud liquid water contents lying between 0.9 and 1.6 g m−3 (i.e., values typically found in mixed-phase clouds). The collection kernels were calculated from the mass increase of the rimed ice particles and the average liquid water …

Shapes and oscillations of raindrops with reduced surface tensions: Measurements at the Mainz vertical wind tunnel

2013

Abstract Important characteristics of raindrops pertinent to fields in atmospheric sciences such as weather radar or pollution scavenging are drop shape, oscillation frequency and amplitude, as well as the internal circulation. Atmospheric raindrops are never pure water drops but contain additional components like aerosol particles and dissolved species. Surface active substances, when present, reduce the surface tension of raindrops and, thus, increase the drop deformation which in turn affects breakup and coalescence, pollutant scavenging, and, finally, the formation of precipitation. Experiments were performed at the Mainz vertical wind tunnel with raindrops freely suspended at their ter…

Wind tunnel study on the size distribution of droplets after collision induced breakup of levitating water drops

2018

Abstract Wind tunnel experiments on collisions between drop pairs of 2.5 and 0.5 mm diameter have been performed and the coalescence and breakup events have been recorded by a high-speed digital camera. From the comprehensive analysis of the captured images, the most important parameters utilized in numerical models, such as coalescence efficiency, breakup type, number of fragments and fragment size distribution after breakup were determined. The experimentally obtained parameters have been compared to parameterizations based on earlier laboratory studies of Low and List, and on direct numerical simulations. A very good agreement between experimental results and parameterizations has been f…

Adaptive time window linear regression algorithm for accurate time synchronization in wireless sensor networks

2015

In this article we propose a new algorithm for time synchronization in wireless sensor networks. The algorithm is based on linear regression to achieve long-term synchronization between the clocks of different network motes. Since motes are built using low-cost hardware components, usually their internal local clocks are not very accurate. In addition, there are other effects that affect the clock precision, such as: environmental conditions, supply voltage, aging, manufacturing process. Because some of these causes are external and unpredictable, the clock drift between two motes can change in a random way. Due to these changes, the optimum time window used for performing the linear regres…

The use of slightly asymmetrical windings for rotating electrical machines

2018

Historically, asymmetrical windings in electrical machines have been rarely used and only for specified needs, because the adoption of symmetrical configurations has always been considered the only solution during the design stage of electrical machines. The aim of this work is to demonstrate with several examples that the use of slightly asymmetrical windings can be a reasonable choice and, in certain cases, a favorable option during the machine design stage, allowing the possibility of selecting a wider range of slot/pole number combinations, without affecting the performances of the machines. More in detail, an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine equipped with a symmetrical 3-p…
