An integrated simulation method for building energy performance assessment in urban environments
2012
a b s t r a c t The microclimate around a building, establishing through the interaction with other buildings or the natural environment, is a significant factor in the building energy consumption. This paper presents a method for the quantitative analysis of building energy performance under any given urban contexts by linking the microclimate model ENVI-met to the building energy simulation (BES) program EnergyPlus. The full microclimatic factors such as solar radiation, long wave radiation, air temperature, air humidity, and wind speed have been considered in the proposed scheme. A case study has been conducted to analyze the effects of different microclimatic factors on the energy balan…
Comparison on the use of PV systems in the vertical walls
2015
In this article the preliminary evaluation of the performance of a photovoltaic window is presented. The aim is to trace the behavior of next-generation systems, which favor architectonical integration. Three different systems have been taken into account: a dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC), blue and grey caved silicon panels. The systems can be placed behind a window or behind a wall of glass blocks.
Take-off aerodynamics in ski jumping
2001
The effect of aerodynamic forces on the force-time characteristics of the simulated ski jumping take-off was examined in a wind tunnel. Vertical and horizontal ground reaction forces were recorded with a force plate installed under the wind tunnel floor. The jumpers performed take-offs in non-wind conditions and in various wind conditions (21-33 m s(-1)). EMGs of the important take-off muscles were recorded from one jumper. The dramatic decrease in take-off time found in all jumpers can be considered as the result of the influence of aerodynamic lift. The loss in impulse due to the shorter force production time with the same take-off force is compensated with the increase in lift force, res…
Experimental characterisation of the CIRA plasma wind tunnel SCIROCCO test section
2008
Abstract During the Validation Phase of the CIRA-PWT SCIROCCO Facility located at Capua (Italy), a test campaign has been carried out to verify the performances of the facility with the use of the two conical nozzle configurations “D” and “F” with exit diameters are, respectively of, 1150 and 1950 mm. For the first time the data results of the tests have been used to characterize the plasma flow in the test section of the facility. In particular, analytical relationships between the main thermo-fluid-dynamic parameters in the test section and the reservoir conditions of the facility have been found, and compared to the CFD prediction developed during the Design Phase of the facility. Very i…
H∞ static output-feedback control design with constrained information for offshore wind turbine system
2013
Abstract This paper deals with H ∞ static output-feedback control design with constrained information for offshore wind turbines. Constrained information indicates that a special zero–nonzero structure is imposed on the static output-feedback gain matrix. A practical use of such an approach is to design a decentralized controller for a wind turbine. This will also benefit the controller in such a way that it is more tolerant to sensor failure. Furthermore, the model under consideration is obtained by using the wind turbine simulation software FAST. Sufficient conditions to design an H ∞ controller are given in terms of Linear Matrix Inequalities ( LMI s ). Simulation results are given to il…
Slotted Blades Savonius Wind Turbine Analysis by CFD
2013
In this paper a new bucket configuration for a Savonius wind generator is proposed. Numerical analyses are performed to estimate the performances of the proposed configuration by means of the commercial code COMSOL Multiphysics® with respect to Savonius wind turbine with overlap only. Parametric analyses are performed, for a fixed overlap ratio, by varying the slot position; the results show that for slot positioned near the blade root, the Savonius rotor improves performances at low tip speed ratio, evidencing a better starting torque. This circumstance is confirmed by static analyses performed on the slotted blades in order to investigate the starting characteristic of the proposed Savoni…
Scalable and Privacy-Preserving Admission Control for Smart Grids
2015
International audience; Energy demand and production need to be constantly matched in the power grid. The traditional paradigm to continuously adapt the production to the demand is challenged by the increasing penetration of more variable and less predictable energy sources, like solar photovoltaics and wind power. An alternative approach is the so called direct control of some inherently flexible electric loads to shape the demand. Direct control of deferrable loads presents analogies with flow admission control in telecommunication networks: a request for network resources (bandwidth or energy) can be delayed on the basis of the current network status in order to guarantee some performanc…
Convergence-based Analysis of Robustness to Delay in Anti-windup Loop of Aircraft Autopilot∗∗This work was supported by Russian Scientific Foundation…
2015
Abstract The windup phenomenon is interpreted as a consequence of the convergent property absence for system with a saturation. This makes it possible to use the frequency-domain criterion for analysis of anti-windup augmentation in the case of stable and marginally stable plants. Based on this approach, robustness of the systems with respect to time delay in the anti-windup loop is examined and the approach for an optimal choice of the static anti-windup gain is proposed. An application of the convergence-based anti-windup control strategy to aircraft flight control for the case of time-delay in the anti-windup loop is described and studied by simulations.
Occupational hygiene in biowaste composting
1998
Source-separated biowastes from the Helsinki Metropolitan Area have been composted in open air windrows at Ammas suo, the Helsinki regional landfill in Espoo (Finland). The most significant problem encountered in the early stages of the process has been the formation of rancid odor causing human discomfort. The offensive odor was mainly due to car boxylic acids. A total of 110 organic compounds were detected in volatile emissions from windrow composts with an integrated sensory and instrumental method. Occasionally the temperatures in the windrows exceeded 80°C. Bacterial measurements also revealed substantial populations of bacte ria at 75°C. The concentrations of airborne microbes and en…
Fast procedure for the calculation of maximum slot filling factors in electrical machines
2017
This paper presents an algorithm for the calculation of maximum slot filling factor in electrical machines. The determination of whole wire cross section that occupy the area of a stator slot is very important in order to estimate the copper losses: The greater is the filling factor the lower are copper losses. The main goal of this paper is to define a simple algorithm for the determination of slot filling factors suitable for all type of slot profiles. The algorithm can be considered as an additional useful tool for the fast design of electrical machine windings.
