Clustering-based robust three-dimensional phase unwrapping algorithm
2010
Relatively recent techniques that produce phase volumes have motivated the study of three-dimensional (3D) unwrapping algorithms that inherently incorporate the third dimension into the process. We propose a novel 3D unwrapping algorithm that can be considered to be a generalization of the minimum spanning tree (MST) approach. The technique combines characteristics of some of the most robust existing methods: it uses a quality map to guide the unwrapping process, a region growing mechanism to progressively unwrap the signal, and also cut surfaces to avoid error propagation. The approach has been evaluated in the context of noncontact measurement of dynamic objects, suggesting a better perfo…
The enigmatic case of the genus Argyresthia in the Azores Islands (Lepidoptera Argyresthiidae)
2020
The species composition of the genus Argyresthia Hübner, 1825 in the Azores is examined. Argyresthia brumella, sp. nov., is described and illustrated from Terceira and Flores Islands. Argyresthia minusculella Rebel, 1940, syn. nov. and Tinea poecilella Rebel, 1940, syn. nov. are synonymized with Argyresthia atlanticella Rebel, 1940. The high variability of A. atlanticella is revealed through the polymorphic wing pattern and the intraspecific genetic divergence of the DNA barcode COI in the specimens examined.
β-Amino alcohols from anilines and ethylene glycol through heterogeneous Borrowing Hydrogen reaction
2017
Abstract Borrowing Hydrogen (BH), also called Hydrogen Autotransfer (HA), reaction with neat ethylene glycol represents a key step in the preparation of β-amino alcohols. However, due to the stability of ethylene glycol, mono-activation has rarely been achieved. Herein, a combination of Pd/C and ZnO is reported as heterogeneous catalyst for this BH/HA reaction. This system results in an extremely air and moisture stable, and economic catalyst able to mono-functionalize ethylene glycol in water, without further activation of the diol. In this work, different diols and aromatic amines have been explored affording a new approach towards amino alcohols. This study reveals how the combination of…
Documentación del Patrimonio Arqueológico mediante el procedimiento del diseño por contacto con las superficies musivas pavimentales y parietales del…
2021
[EN] The archaeological excavations that have been carried out in the Hispano-Roman city of Valeria have exhumed the remains of a thermal complex from the 1st century AD that it was in service for four centuries and that, after its abandonment, it was barely spoiled for its constructive and decorative materials. This circumstance has allowed the conservation of a paving mosaic in a good state of preservation. In this same room has been recovered an important collection of fragments corresponding to the parietal musive decoration that constitutes a unique corpus in the Roman archaeology of the province of Cuenca. Due to the historical-archaeological importance of this type of elements, a met…

Pitfalls in the Development of Agent-Based Models in Social Sciences: Avoiding Them and Learning from Them
2019
The references on the principles and methodology for developing agent-based models of social phenomena usually describe general principles and illustrate the process using worked examples, but seldom focus on the pitfalls and errors that make practical model building a tortuous and difficult task. This chapter contains a discussion of the positive and negative aspects of my personal experience in a PhD work on simulation of large scale social conflict. The purpose will be to describe the process from the initial plan to the final dissertation, analyze the pitfalls and their overcoming in terms of principles of model development, and summarize the ideas that I found useful for practical deve…
Film blowing of silane-modified polyethylene
2009
The grafting of vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) onto polyethylene (PE) with the help of small amounts of peroxides was investigated to film-blow these modified materials. The degree of crosslinking was kept very low to achieve good melt processability and improved mechanical properties. The possibility of obtaining modified PE films with improved properties and regularly distributed crosslinking with a single processing step demonstrates the uniqueness of this study. The additive concentration was established through preliminary studies; with a batch mixer, it was possible to process the modified PE in the film-blowing operation. Water treatment of the modified films after film blowing allowed …
Goethe's scenography drawings
2017
[EN] Goethe’s facet of playwright and theater manager guarantee his architectural knowledge on these issues shown in his drawings. In its stage proposals he left the Vitruvian and Palladian models, followed in the typological definition, eliminating the architectural frons scænæ frons and preferring sets painted. Thus, fictitious architecture fit each representation but it differed from building’s architecture appropriateness.
WebGIS Implementation for Dynamic Mapping and Visualization of Coastal Geospatial Data: A Case Study of BESS Project
2021
Within an E.U.-funded project, BESS (Pocket Beach Management and Remote Surveillance System), the notion of a geographic information system is an indispensable tool for managing the dynamics of georeferenced data and information for any form of territorial planning. This notion was further explored with the creation of a WebGIS portal that will allow local and regional stakeholders/authorities obtain an easy remote access tool to monitor the status of pocket beaches (PB) in the Maltese Archipelago and Sicily. In this paper, we provide a methodological approach for the implementation of a WebGIS necessary for very detailed dynamic mapping and visualization of geospatial coastal data
Utopia e distopia nel progetto digitale
2020
