L’Anfiteatro di Sabratha, ignorato dai viaggiatori del XVIII e XIX secolo, venne segnalato nel 1912 da Henri Méhier de Mathuisieulx ed indagato da Renato Bartoccini a partire dal 1924. Gli scavi e le ricerche portate avanti in quegli anni permisero di rimettere in luce gran parte del monumento, che rimase tuttavia non pubblicato. Using light and electron microscopy, we studied the development of the wing discs in the large beetle Zophobas atratus, under natural and experimental conditions. A reversible differentiation of the wing discs is usually observed during supernumerary instars of crowded larvae. Juvenile hormone analog (JHA) application during the wandering period or compelled experimental crowding during the larval-pupal switchover – or commitment – inhibits the onset of metamorphosis. Isolation, followed by recrowding, also induces the disc cells to secrete unusual cuticular material. 0012-1606 (Print) Journal Article; Changes in translatable mRNAs from the wing epidermis of the Coleoptera Tenebrio molitor have been investigated during metamorphosis by analysis of in vitro translated products. Striking differences between the patterns obtained from mRNAs extracted during pupal and adult cuticle secretion indicated that a drastic change in gene expression occurs during the pupal-adult transition. In addition to these stage-specific modifications, the mRNA patterns changed within each cuticular synthesis program (pupal or adult), especially at ecdysis. ABSTRACTThis study explores images of childhood by analysing children's pictorial representations and accompanying captions. The focus is on how children together with adults represent childhood in the home and daycare settings in a oneweek diary study. The key analytical tool was framing, which is used to highlight what kinds of images are (re)produced and narrated. The frames that emerged were (1) portrayal of the child via cultural products and societal relations, (2) portrayal of the child via individuality, relationships and attachment, (3) the child as a symbol of capabilities, and (4) the child as a learner. Predator mimicry, not conspicuousness, explains the efficacy of butterfly eyespots

Large conspicuous eyespots on butterfly wings have been shown to deter predators. This has been traditionally explained by mimicry of vertebrate eyes, but recently the classic eye-mimicry hypothesis has been challenged. It is proposed that the conspicuousness of the eyespot, not mimicry, is what causes aversion due to sensory biases, neophobia or sensory overloads. We conducted an experiment to directly test whether the eye-mimicry or the conspicuousness hypothesis better explain eyespot efficacy.
