OLSR Mesh Networks for Broadband Access: Enhancements, Implementation and Deployment
2008
In the context of an EU FP6 project, ADHOCSYS, we have developed a reliable and cost-effective solution for broadband Internet access in rural and mountainous areas. This solution is built based on multi-hop wireless mesh networking technologies and covers many aspects such as routing, reliability, QoS, security, self-configuration, self-healing, remote network monitoring, power management etc. In this paper, we present solely the routing aspect of the developed mesh network, focusing on new routing features that have been designed, implemented, and deployed in a real-life operational network. These new features are developed based on an extended version of the OLSR protocol. The test resul…
Overcoming synchronization issues in wireless technology Partial Discharge measurement
2016
In this paper, several aspects of the fundamentals of wireless Partial Discharge (PD) measurements are first discussed. Then, the relevance of the problem of voltage synchronization in PD wireless diagnosis is outlined. When portable instruments are used for PD detection, the main issue is the voltage measurement at the site where the PD detection is carried out. When such analysis is carried out over shielded cables, the AC (50/60 Hz) voltage reference signal is not easily detectable, while one of the basic parameters for PD diagnosis, the displacement of the inception voltage of the PD as compared to the reference voltage, is not available. Even if highperformance sensors are readily avai…
Fast procedure for the calculation of maximum slot filling factors in electrical machines
2017
This paper presents an algorithm for the calculation of maximum slot filling factor in electrical machines. The determination of whole wire cross section that occupy the area of a stator slot is very important in order to estimate the copper losses: The greater is the filling factor the lower are copper losses. The main goal of this paper is to define a simple algorithm for the determination of slot filling factors suitable for all type of slot profiles. The algorithm can be considered as an additional useful tool for the fast design of electrical machine windings.
Consensus based distributed estimation of biomass concentration in reverse osmosis membranes
2015
The correct estimation of biofilm formation in industrial environments, such as reverse osmosis plants, has become a topic of great interest. The occurrence of this natural process is the cause of huge economic losses due to a decrease of performance and maintenance costs in these plants. Current solutions based on water pretreatment or the dozing of biocides are not effective due to the lack of information about the state of the biofilm in the water system. In this work, we propose the use of a wireless sensor network that, based on the measurement of the biofilm thickness growth at the substratum of each sensor, estimates the biomass concentration within the biofilm, and, eventually, the …
A cooperative lifetime extension MAC protocol in duty cycle enabled wireless sensor networks
2011
To reduce energy consumption in wireless sensor networks, the concept of duty cycle is used in many MAC protocols. Although these protocols provide efficient energy-conservation solutions, they cannot resolve the energy hole problem in a multi-hop network, where a few nodes near the sink must relay the packets from the rest of the network, and consequently exhaust their batteries earlier. The previously proposed REACT forwarding protocol triggers the cooperation of several nodes to extend transmission range and hop over the highly burdened node, thereby allowing it to save its energy and extend the lifetime of the network. However, the previous work lacked a MAC protocol with a duty cycle. …
<title>Control and measuring buses with amplitude fiber optical sensors</title>
2004
This paper presents controlling-measuring buses (linear and quasi-linear) using amplitude properties of fiber-optics and fiber-optical sensors of typical and/or special construction. It refers to linear sensors and commonly used measuring OTDR method, as wel as to realizations with linear binary sensors in transmission networks. Presented advantages and parameters of such measuring structures. Presented main area of application buses and practical realizations, regarding typical needs in industrial measurements, points out technical and economical advantages, in opposition to difficult and expensive (but more accurate) technology of measuring networks based on polarization and interfering m…
Combined Analysis of OFDM-UWB Transmission in Hybrid Wireless-Optical Access Networks
2009
[EN] The hybrid wireless-optical transmission of ultra-wideband signals employing orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing modulation (OFDM) ultra-wideband (UWB) as defined in the ECMA-368 standard is experimentally analyzed in this letter. The OFDM-UWB signals provide 400 Mb/s per user at optical distances from 5 to 50 km on standard single-mode fiber (SSMF). The analysis includes the wireless radiation from 0 to 3 m after optical transmission. The results indicate a maximum error-vector-magnitude degradation of 2.5 dB measured at 1.5-m radio after 50-km SSMF optical transmission for the first two UWB channels. This degradation translates to 1-m maximum wireless-reach penalty.
Optimizing the MAC Protocol in Localization Systems Based on IEEE 802.15.4 Networks
2017
Radio frequency signals are commonly used in the development of indoor localization systems. The infrastructure of these systems includes some beacons placed at known positions that exchange radio packets with users to be located. When the system is implemented using wireless sensor networks, the wireless transceivers integrated in the network motes are usually based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. But, the CSMA-CA, which is the basis for the medium access protocols in this category of communication systems, is not suitable when several users want to exchange bursts of radio packets with the same beacon to acquire the radio signal strength indicator (RSSI) values needed in the location proce…
Power Consumption Analysis of Operating Systems for Wireless Sensor Networks
2010
In this paper four wireless sensor network operating systems are compared in terms of power consumption. The analysis takes into account the most common operating systems-TinyOS v1.0, TinyOS v2.0, Mantis and Contiki-running on Tmote Sky and MICAz devices. With the objective of ensuring a fair evaluation, a benchmark composed of four applications has been developed, covering the most typical tasks that a Wireless Sensor Network performs. The results show the instant and average current consumption of the devices during the execution of these applications. The experimental measurements provide a good insight into the power mode in which the device components are running at every moment, and t…
Automated inventory management and security surveillance system using image processing techniques
2010
Efficient inventory management and allocation of cargo space is an imperative parameter in the industry today. In this paper we propose an algorithm to automate complete inventory unit with the aid of image processing and artificial intelligence algorithms. These algorithms work on the data acquired through image processing. This data then integrates with the Artificial Intelligence algorithm which in turn takes inputs from the sensors present on the robot. These sensors help in precise localization of the robot. The path planning algorithm takes input from virtual map buffer which is present in the CPU memory. This buffer in accordance with the sensor data and Image Processing data generat…
