Enhancement of the sub-band-gap photoconductivity in ZnO nanowires through surface functionalization with carbon nanodots

2018

We report on the surface functionalization of ZnO nanowire (NW) arrays by attachment of carbon nanodots (C-dots) stabilized by polyethylenimine. The photoconductive properties of the ZnO NWs/C-dots devices were investigated under photoexcitation with photon energies below and above the ZnO band gap. The results indicate an increased photoresponse of the functionalized devices in the visible spectral range, as well as enhanced UV photoconductivity. This is attributed to the fast injection of photoexcited electrons from the C-dots into the conduction band of the ZnO NWs, and the subsequent slower desorption of molecular species from the NW surface, which reduces the surface depletion region i…

Two-terminal nanoelectromechanical devices based on germanium nanowires.

2009

A two-terminal bistable device, having both ON and OFF regimes, has been demonstrated with Ge nanowires using an in situ TEM-STM technique. The function of the device is based on delicately balancing electrostatic, elastic, and adhesion forces between the nanowires and the contacts, which can be controlled by the applied voltage. The operation and failure conditions of the bistable device were investigated, i.e. the influence of nanowire diameter, the surface oxide layer on the nanowires and the current density. During ON/OFF cycles the Ge nanowires were observed to be more stable than carbon nanotubes, working at similar conditions, due to the higher mechanical stability of the nanowires. …

Two-terminal nanoelectromechanical bistable switches based on molybdenum–sulfur–iodine molecular wire bundles

2010

We demonstrate the application of Mo(6)S(3)I(6) molecular wire bundles for electrically controllable two-terminal on-off switches. We investigate how changes in the contact electrode material and geometry influence the device characteristics, hysteretic switching behavior and device stability. We also determine the device operating parameters, particularly the Young's moduli (40-270 GPa), operating current densities (3.2 x 10(5)-7 x 10(6) A m(-2)) and force constants. Although qualitatively, the properties of Mo(6)S(3)I(6) nanowires in nanoelectromechanical (NEM) switches are similar to those of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), their lower friction coefficient, higher mechanical stability and highe…

Effect of cobalt doping on the mechanical properties of ZnO nanowires

2016

Abstract In this work, we investigate the influence of doping on the mechanical properties of ZnO nanowires (NWs) by comparing the mechanical properties of pure and Co-doped ZnO NWs grown in similar conditions and having the same crystallographic orientation [0001]. The mechanical characterization included three-point bending tests made with atomic force microscopy and cantilever beam bending tests performed inside scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the Young's modulus of ZnO NWs containing 5% of Co was approximately a third lower than that of the pure ZnO NWs. Bending strength values were comparable for both materials and in both cases were close to theoretical strength indica…

Mechanical properties of sol–gel derived SiO2 nanotubes

2014

The mechanical properties of thick-walled SiO2 nanotubes (NTs) prepared by a sol–gel method while using Ag nanowires (NWs) as templates were measured by using different methods. In situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) cantilever beam bending tests were carried out by using a nanomanipulator equipped with a force sensor in order to investigate plasticity and flexural response of NTs. Nanoindentation and three point bending tests of NTs were performed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) under ambient conditions. Half-suspended and three-point bending tests were processed in the framework of linear elasticity theory. Finite element method simulations were used to extract Young’s modulus values…

Performance Study of Split Ferrite Cores Designed for EMI Suppression on Cables

2020

The ideal procedure to start designing an electronic device is to consider the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) from the beginning. Even so, EMC problems can appear afterward, especially when the designed system is interconnected with external devices. Thereby, electromagnetic interferences (EMIs) could be transmitted to our device from power cables that interconnect it with an external power source or are connected to another system to establish wired communication. The application of an EMI suppressor such as a sleeve core that encircles the cables is a widely used technique to attenuate EM disturbances. This contribution is focused on the characterization of a variation of this cable …

Strain-controlled domain wall injection into nanowires for sensor applications

2021

We investigate experimentally the effects of externally applied strain on the injection of 180$^\circ$ domain walls (DW) from a nucleation pad into magnetic nanowires, as typically used for DW-based sensors. In our study the strain, generated by substrate bending, induces in the material a uniaxial anisotropy due to magnetoelastic coupling. To compare the strain effects, $Co_{40}Fe_{40}B_{20}$, $Ni$ and $Ni_{82}Fe_{18}$ samples with in-plane magnetization and different magnetoelastic coupling are deposited. In these samples, we measure the magnetic field required for the injection of a DW, by imaging differential contrast in a magneto-optical Kerr microscope. We find that strain increases t…

Facilitating domain wall injection in magnetic nanowires by electrical means

2020

We investigate how to facilitate the injection of domain walls in chiral ferromagnetic nanowires by electrical means. We calculate the critical current density above which domain walls are injected into the nanowire depending on the material parameters and the source of interaction including spin-transfer torques as well as spin-orbit torques. We demonstrate that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can significantly reduce the required critical current to inject the types of domain walls favored by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We find that in chiral magnets it is only possible to shed a single domain wall by means of spin-orbit torques, as they modify the ground state orientatio…

Temperature dependence of magnetization reversal in Co and Fe3O4 nanowire arrays

2005

Abstract In this paper, we investigate the magnetization reversal of cobalt and magnetite nanowires, 4 nm in diameter, synthesized within the pores of mesoporous silica thin films. A SQUID magnetometer was used to study the magnetic properties of the nanowire arrays over a broad temperature interval, T= 1.8–300 K. The magnetization reversal process was found to be strongly temperature dependent. While a coherent rotation may occur at room temperature, a process involving the formation of domain structures takes place as the temperature decreases down to 1.8 K.

Surface optical phonon modes in GaN nanowire arrays: Dependence on nanowire density and diameter

2012

We present a systematic study, by means of Raman scattering, of the surface optical modes of GaN nanowires (NW) as a function of the fill factor, defined as the relative concentration of GaN NWs and the surrounding air. We show that changes in the fill factor from 0.8 to 0.3 result in a shift of the surface optical mode of more than 60 cm${}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, which is explained by theoretical calculations of surface vibrations for a cylindrical nanowire based on the dielectric continuum model. Two cases are considered: the effective dielectric function approximation (Maxwell-Garnett approximation) and a model for isolated NWs with various diameters. We conclude, in agreement with the Maxw…
