CADWAN – A Control Architecture for Dense Wi-Fi Access Networks

The growing demands of ubiquitous computing are leading towards the densification of wireless access networks. The challenges of high density deployments can be addressed by network- wide centralized control. To this end we propose CADWAN – a Control Architecture for efficient management of Dense Wi-Fi Access Networks. Its main advantages are: flexibility (it supports software- defined wireless networking), scalability (it uses a three-tier optimization framework), and extendibility (it exploits a unified control interface with support for heterogeneous devices). Furthermore, CADWAN is complementary to ongoing developments in IEEE 802.11, especially 802.11ax.

Network virtualization has been extensively researched in the last years as a key enabler for improving the network performance. However, virtualization in wireless networks pose some unique challenges: first, the usual over-provisioning approach for providing isolation between multiple virtual entities is not viable; second, the partitioning criteria are often ambiguous, since the actual resources perceived by each entity depend on many external (and time-varying) factors. Cooperative RTS/CTS MAC with relay selection in distributed wireless networks

This paper proposes a cooperative multiple access protocol based on the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) Request-To-Send/Clear-To-Send (RTS/CTS) scheme for distributed wireless networks. It answers three key questions concerning cooperation from the network perspective, namely when to cooperate, whom to cooperate with and how to protect cooperative transmissions. According to our protocol, the cooperation is initiated only if the direct transmission fails. Impact of portable device restrictions on IEEE 802.16 performance

IEEE 802.16 is a good alternative for fast wireless connection in the next generation portable information devices (PID). However it was not originally designed for portable devices, but mobility was added later to the specification. This means that the lack of resources on portable devices might have a significant impact on which IEEE 802.16 features should be chosen and how they should be used. Proper usage of ARQ can increase the IEEE 802.16 performance but it can also require much resources from PIDs. In this paper we focus on how ARQ features are affected by limited resources on PID and how much the limitations affect on the performance.

Do Current Domestic Gigabit Wireless Technologies Fulfill User Requirements for Ultra High Definition Videos?

We present the results from a measurement-based performance evaluation of wireless networks based on IEEE 802.11n and IEEE 802.11ac standards in an indoor environment, with the aim to analyze their performance under high definition streaming video applications. We focus our study on analyzing the highest performance of these standards using off-the-shelf equipment, both with synthetic TCP and UDP traffic to measure the saturation throughput as well as high definition video streams. Gatherer: an environmental monitoring application based on IPv6 using wireless sensor networks

In this paper, we present an environmental monitoring application based on IPv6 using wireless sensor networks. We show the guidelines to connect this network to internet using the 6LowPAN standard with a real prototype in the evolution of the Internet of Things. We assign a unique IPv6 address to the different nodes motes of the network. Gatherer is based on TinyOS using IPv6 and UDP protocols and allows the data gathering of temperature and relative humidity from the different motes, requesting specific data from individual motes when required, increasing the accuracy of the measures.
