CiNetView - Graphic Interface for Wireless Sensor Network Deployment and Monitoring

2010

Reliable communication is crucial for successful deployment of a wireless sensor network. Many environmental factors can affect the performance of radio links, and the deployment of a network without real-time information about link qualities can be a demanding task. This paper describes the CiNetView application that is intended to support the deployment and monitoring of wireless sensor network. CiNetView is based on diagnostic information collected by sensor nodes, and it allows the user to see a graphical presentation of the network topology and to monitor the network diagnostic information in real time.

A Personal LPWAN Remote Monitoring System

2021

Firefighters are equipped with an immobility detector device also called the Personal Alert Safety System (PASS) that is integrated into the user's Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). If a firefighter remains motionless for a certain period of time, a loud audible alert is triggered to notify the Firefighter Assist and Search Team (FAST) deployed in the area of intervention that the wearer of the PASS device is in trouble and in need of rescue. However, this device is not reliable enough since it triggers frequently false positives which lead to developing a tolerance for sounding alarms among the crew. As a consequence, they do not seem to be concerned about it as they should and th…

Automated Soil Moisture Monitoring Wireless Sensor Network for Long-Term Cal/Val Applications

2012

The design and development of a wireless sensor network for soil moisture measurement in an unlevelled 10 km × 10 km area, is described. It was specifically deployed for the characterization of a reference area, in campaigns of calibration and validation of the space mission SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity), but the system is easily extensible to monitor other climatic or environmental variables, as well as to other regions of ecological interest. The network consists of a number of automatic measurement stations, strategically placed following soil homogeneity and land uses criteria. Every station includes acquisition, conditioning and communication systems. The electronics are batt…

Development of a low-cost IoT system to detect and locate lightning strikes

2020

Lightnings are violent natural phenomena and can generate many expenditures, specially when they strike in urban areas. The identification of the concrete geographic area where they strike is of critical importance for emergency services in order to enhance their effectiveness by doing an intensive coverage of the affected area. To achieve this aim, this paper proposes a design, prototype and validation of a distributed network of Internet of Things (IoT) devices to enable detection and location of lightning strikes. The IoT devices are empowered with lightning detection capabilities and are synchronized with the other devices in the sensor network. All of them cooperate within a network th…

LoRa Technology Demystified: From Link Behavior to Cell-Level Performance

2020

In this paper we study the capability of LoRa technology in rejecting different interfering LoRa signals and the impact on the cell capacity. First, we analyze experimentally the link-level performance of LoRa and show that collisions between packets modulated with the same Spreading Factor (SF) usually lead to channel captures, while different spreading factors can indeed cause packet loss if the interference power is strong enough. Second, we model the effect of such findings to quantify the achievable capacity in a typical LoRa cell: we show that high SFs, generally seen as more robust, can be severely affected by inter-SF interference and that different criteria for deciding SF allocati…

A Novel Approach for Faulty Sensor Detection and Data Correction in Wireless Sensor Network

2013

he main Wireless Sensor Networks purpose is represented by areas of interest monitoring. Even if the Wireless sensor network is properly initialized, errors can occur during its monitoring tasks. The present work describes an approach for detecting faulty sensors in Wireless Sensor Network and for correcting their corrupted data. The approach is based on the assumption that exist a spatio-temporal cross- correlations among sensors. Two sequential mathematical tools are used. The first stage is a probabilistic tools, namely Markov Random Field, for a two-fold sensor classification (working or damaged). The last stage is represented by the Locally Weighted Regression model, a learning techniq…

Closing the sensing-reasoning-actuating loop in resource-constrained WSANs through distributed symbolic processing

2015

Many issues in creating complex applications for pervasive environments are primarily due to the effort required to integrate perception, reasoning and actuating tasks in an efficient and homogeneous way, especially when the underlying infrastructure consists of wirelessly networked embedded devices. To mitigate the complexity of the actual implementation, satisfactory programming paradigms supporting the integration and coordination among heterogeneous devices are required. In this paper we show how a distributed symbolic processing approach that is particularly suited for resource constrained devices, such as the nodes of a Wireless Sensor and Actuator Network (WSAN), may be apt to the pu…

Energy Harvesting Powered Packet Transmissions in Duty-Cycled WSNs: A DTMC Analysis

2017

Energy harvesting (EH) promises an extended lifetime for wireless sensor networks (WSNs), supplying sensor nodes with accumulated energy from natural sources. Different from battery powered sensors, nodes in EH-enabled WSNs are equipped with an energy harvesting accessory in order to extract energy from surrounding sources. Based upon the harvested energy, sensor nodes perform data exchange activities. In this paper, we develop two discrete time Markov chain (DTMC) models to analyze the performance of packet transmissions in such a WSN while employing a generic synchronous medium access control (MAC) protocol. Using the proposed DTMC models, we investigate the effect of EH over a specific s…

Collision Avoidance in Wake-Up Radio Enabled WSNs: Protocol and Performance Evaluation

2018

In wake-up radio (WuR) enabled wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the envisaged application scenarios are primarily targeted at low traffic load conditions. When applying WuR to medium or heavy traffic load scenarios, however, collisions among wake-up calls (WuCs) may happen, resulting in a lower packet delivery ratio (PDR). In this paper, we propose a media access control protocol for WuR- enabled WSN that is capable of avoiding WuC collisions by activating a contention-based collision avoidance mechanism for WuC transmissions. The performance of the proposed protocol is evaluated by a Markov chain based mathematical model and is compared with a WuR protocol that performs only clear channel as…

Event-Triggered Sleeping for Synchronous DC MAC IN WSNs: Mechanism and DTMC Modeling

2016

Overhearing and idle listening are two primary sources for unnecessary energy consumption in wireless sensor networks. Although introducing duty cycling in medium access control (MAC) reduces idle listening, it cannot avoid overhearing in a network with multiple contending nodes. In this paper, we propose an event-triggered sleeping (ETS) mechanism for synchronous duty-cycled (DC) MAC protocols in order to avoid overhearing when a node is not active. This ETS mechanism applies to any synchronous DC MAC protocols and makes them more energy efficient. Furthermore, we develop a two dimensional discrete time Markov chain model to evaluate the performance of the proposed ETS mechanism by integra…
