Mozart e Paisiello: a proposito dell’aria «Mentre ti lascio, o figlia» K. 513

2018

The text of Mozart's scena e aria K. 513 comes from Giovanni Paisiello's "La disfatta di Dario" performed for the first time in Rome in 1776. The article reconstructs the whole tradition of the libretto, written by Carlo Diodati Morbili in Naples in 1756 and set to music by various authors till the end of the century. There is a large body of evidence that Paisiello's "Mentre ti lascio, o cara" reached large popularity thanks to the most famous tenors of the time. The dramaturgical context of the aria is examined in detail, and four different versions are compared (Paisiello, Traetta, Mozart, and Frigel). Mozart's setting is demonstrated to be directly inspired by Paisiello's model.

2019

ABSTRACT. (Wolves and wolf place names in Sicily: an interdisciplinary comparison). Starting from zoological and onomastic aspects, the paper aims at comparing data demonstrating the presence of wolves in Sicily. Apart from the review offered by LA MANTIA & CANNELLA (2008) and the study on Minà Palumbo’s works (GENCHI 2012), further sources prove the presence of wolves in Sicily, in particular in the Madonie area. The integration of these data with those concerning ethno-linguistic and toponymic aspects, even without the support of other scientific works, allows to verify the distribution of this predator in Sicily as well as its presence in Sicilian cultural imagery.

Goethes Italienische Reise in Hebbels römischem Briefwechsel: Italienerfahrung zwischen Epigonalität und Originalität

2020

Neue Frauen oltreoceano

2020

The essay offers an overview of the experience of exile of a group of German and Austrian female writers (Adrienne Thomas, Irmgard Keun, Victoria Wolff, Gina Kaus and Vicki Baum), who had been a symbol of the so–called Neue Frau in the Twenties and emigrated after the rise of National Socialism. From an autobiographical point of view the reconstruction of their experience of exile, which sometimes include common stations (Vienna, Paris, the crossing of the Atlantic, Hollywood and, in some cases, the return to Europe), allows to compare their careers and to find out breaks and possible lines of continuity in the process of their literary affirmation and social emancipation which had begun in…

Honesty of agonistic signalling and effects of size and motivation asymmetry in contests

1999

Game theoretical models predict that the main function of fighting behaviour is to assess the relative fighting ability of opponents. The sequential assessment game has often been used to investigate contests, while honest signalling theory has received much less attention. With the wolf spider Hygrolycosa rubrofasciata we investigated whether male agonistic signalling can reveal honest information about fighting ability, and how size and motivation asymmetries affect male fighting behaviour. We also determined whether male–male competition affects the courtship behaviour of the males. We found that agonistic drumming activity is an honest indicator of male fighting ability, and that relati…

Overwintering survival in relation to body mass in a field population of the wolf spider ( Hygrolycosa rubrofasciata )

1999

Body size is often considered to be an important trait affecting individual fitness. In arthropods, females commonly benefit from larger size directly through increased fecundity (Roff, 1992), and males through increased mating success (Andersson, 1994). It has also been suggested that larger individuals may in general have a better survival than smaller individuals (Calder, 1983; Peters, 1983). From this suggestion it may be predicted that during stressful environmental conditions larger individuals should do better than smaller individuals.

Crystallization and preliminary X-ray analysis of native and selenomethionyl vinorine synthase from Rauvolfia serpentina.

2005

Vinorine synthase (VS) is a central enzyme of the biosynthesis of the antiarrhythmic drug ajmaline and is a member of the BAHD superfamily of acyltransferases. So far, no three-dimensional structure with significant sequence homology with VS is known. Crystals of VS and selenomethionyl-labelled VS from the medicinal plant Rauvolfia serpentina have been obtained by the hanging-drop technique at 305 K with ammonium sulfate and PEG 400 as precipitants. VS crystals diffract to 2.8 Å and belong to space group P212121, with unit-cell parameters a = 82.3, b = 89.6, c = 136.2 Å. The selenomethionyl VS crystal was nearly isomorphous with the VS crystal.
