Disentangling canid howls across multiple species and subspecies: Structure in a complex communication channel
2016
Wolves, coyotes, and other canids are members of a diverse genus of top predators of considerable conservation and management interest. Canid howls are long-range communication signals, used both for territorial defence and group cohesion. Previous studies have shown that howls can encode individual and group identity. However, no comprehensive study has investigated the nature of variation in canid howls across the wide range of species. We analysed a database of over 2000 howls recorded from 13 different canid species and subspecies. We applied a quantitative similarity measure to compare the modulation pattern in howls from different populations, and then applied an unsupervised clusteri…
«Bella mia fiamma, addio / Resta, o cara» tra Jommelli e Mozart: osservazioni e ipotesi sull’aria K. 528
2012
Mozart wrote the scena and aria K. 528 in Prague in 1787 for the singer Josepha Duschek. As previously known, this wonderful page is based on a text taken from “Cerere placata”, a “festa teatrale” created in Naples in 1772 by the man of letters and scientist Michele Sarcone and the renowned “maestro di cappella” Niccolò Jommelli to celebrate the birth of the first daughter of king Ferdinand IV of Bourbon. The article reconstructs in detail the circumstances of the Neapolitan performance, and shows that Jommelli’s setting of Titano’s recitative and aria “Bella mia fiamma, addio” / “Resta, o cara; acerba morte” enjoyed a large success and circulated as an autonomous piece. A comparison betwee…
«Nozze» napoletane. «La serva onorata» di Giambattista Lorenzi e Nicolò Piccinni (1792)
2012
In chiusura vengono propo…

2011
To aim of this paper was to offer a further contribution to the knowledge af the Wolfram Syndrome within the Italian population about hypotheses of its genetic trasmission and diagnostic problems. The study comprised the genetic investigation and the clinical ophthalmological examination of all the family members. Genetic investigation of family members showed the presence of a genetic disorder, consisting in a mutation of the gene wfs1, located on the short arm of chromosome 4, and which codifies for the protein Wolfranin. The gene wfs1 presents high penetrance and expression, since the mutation is recessive, it can only be clinicallly detected when it is present in the homozygous form. It sh…
Brief Review of the Effects of Pressure on Wolframite-Type Oxides
2018
In this article we review the advances that have been made on the understanding of the high-pressure structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of wolframite-type oxides since the first works in the early 1990s. Mainly tungstates, which are the best known wolframites, but also tantalates and niobates, with an isomorphic ambient-pressure wolframite structure, have been included in this review. Apart from estimating the bulk moduli of all known wolframites; the cation-oxygen bond distances and their change with pressure have been correlated with their compressibility. The composition variations of all wolframites have been employed to understand their different structural phase transi…
A Brief Review of the Effects of Pressure on Wolframite-Type Oxides

In this article, we review the advances that have been made on the understanding of the high-pressure (HP) structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of wolframite-type oxides since the first works in the early 1990s. Apart from estimating the bulk moduli of all known wolframites, the cation–oxygen bond distances and their change with pressure have been correlated with their compressibility. The composition variations of all wolframites have been employed to understand their different structural phase …
Local atomic and electronic structure of tungsten ions in AWO4 crystals of scheelite and wolframite types
2001
Abstract X-ray absorption spectroscopy was used to study the local atomic and electronic structure of tungsten ions in polycrystalline scheelite CaWO4 and wolframite-type ZnWO4 and NiWO4. The W L1- and L3-edges X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) signals suggest tetrahedral coordination of tungsten ions in CaWO4 and strongly distorted octahedral coordination in ZnWO4 and NiWO4. Accurate analysis of the W L3-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) signals by the regularization procedure was performed to reconstruct the radial distribution functions within the first coordination shell around tungsten atoms in AWO4 crystals and polycrystalline WO3, which was utilized for…
