Introduction to General Duality Theory for Multi-Objective Optimization
1992
This is intended as a comprehensive introduction to the duality theory for vector optimization recently developed by C. Malivert and the present author [3]. It refers to arbitrarily given classes of mappings (dual elements) and extends the general duality theory proposed for scalar optimization by E. Balder, S. Kurcyusz and the present author [1] and P. Lindberg.
Convex Duality in Stochastic Optimization and Mathematical Finance
2011
This paper proposes a general duality framework for the problem of minimizing a convex integral functional over a space of stochastic processes adapted to a given filtration. The framework unifies many well-known duality frameworks from operations research and mathematical finance. The unification allows the extension of some useful techniques from these two fields to a much wider class of problems. In particular, combining certain finite-dimensional techniques from convex analysis with measure theoretic techniques from mathematical finance, we are able to close the duality gap in some situations where traditional topological arguments fail.
On the sources of the late integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect
2000
In some scenarios, the peculiar gravitational potential of linear and mildly nonlinear structures depends on time and, as a result of this dependence, a late integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect appears. Here, an appropriate formalism is used which allows us to improve on the analysis of the spatial scales and locations of the main cosmological inhomogeneities producing this effect. The study is performed in the framework of the currently preferred flat model with cosmological constant, and it is also developed in an open model for comparisons. Results from this analysis are used to discuss the contribution of Great Attractor-like objects, voids, and other structures to the CMB anisotropy.
Residual fluctuations in the microwave background at large angular scales: Revision of the Sachs-Wolfe effect
1993
In this paper we revise the Sachs-Wolfe (SW) computation of large-scale an isotropies of the microwave background temperature, taking into account the properties of the metrics admitting an isotropic distribution of collisionless photons. We show that the metric used by SW belongs to the aforementioned class, and conclude that the microwave background (once the dipolar anisotropy has been subtracted) should now be isotropic at large angular scales, provided that it was isotropic on the last scattering surface and assuming that the growing mode of a pressureless Einstein-de Sitter perturbation is a good description of the metric.
BETWEEN PROGRESSIVISM AND INSTITUTIONALISM: ALBERT BENEDICT WOLFE ON EUGENICS
2013
Albeit concerned with the biological element in social evolution, Albert B. Wolfe was among the very few economists of the progressive era who openly expressed his concerns about certain implications of eugenic rhetoric for the social science. Specifically, Wolfe questioned the strong hereditary boundaries that more extreme eugenicists suggested about human beings. As I will attempt to show in paper, a careful examination of Wolfe’s writings reveals that his reaction was rooted in the belief that many of the social problems which eugenicists attributed to hereditary limitations, were actually imputable to the influence that the social, economic, and physical environment exercised on the ind…
The Cabibbo angle as a universal seed for quark and lepton mixings
2015
A model-independent ansatz to describe lepton and quark mixing in a unified way is suggested based upon the Cabibbo angle. In our framework neutrinos mix in a "Bi-Large" fashion, while the charged leptons mix as the "down-type" quarks do. In addition to the standard Wolfenstein parameters (lambda, A) two other free parameters are needed to specify the physical lepton mixing matrix. Through this simple assumption one makes specific predictions for the atmospheric angle as well as leptonic CP violation in good agreement with current observations.
Economic Design Approach for an SPC Inspection Procedure Implementing The Adaptive C Chart
2013
The present paper proposes a design approach for a statistical process control (SPC) procedure implementing a c control chart for non-conformities, with the aim to minimize the hourly total quality-related costs. The latter take into account the costs arising from the non-conforming products while the process is in-control and out-of-control, for false alarms, for assignable cause locations and system repairs, for sampling and inspection activities and for the system downtime. The proposed economic optimization approach is constrained by the expected hourly false alarms frequency, as well as the available labor resource level. A mixed integer non-linear constrained mathematical model is dev…
Representations of social class and urban poverty in Tom Wolfe's The bonfire of the vanities
2016
Yhdysvaltalaista yhteiskuntaa on sen 1900-luvulla kehittyneestä taloudellisesta valta-asemasta huolimatta jo pitkään vaivannut niin sanottu köyhyyden paradoksi: huono-osaisuuden ja epätasa-arvon ilmeneminen yhdessä maailman rikkaimmista valtioista. Tätä paradoksia on käsitelty toisinaan myös amerikkalaisessa kirjallisuudessa, josta esimerkkinä on Tom Wolfe satiirinen romaani The Bonfire of the Vanities (Turhuuksien rovio, 1987). Tämä tutkielma tarkastelee teoksen kuvausta 1980-luvun New Yorkin kaltaiseen suurkaupunkiin keskittyneestä köyhyydestä, etenkin vähemmistöjen keskuudessa. Käyttäen pohjana 1960-luvulta alkanutta keskustelua alempiin sosiaaliluokkiin vaikuttavista ongelmista niin ulk…
