'Climbing Untrodden Paths and Unfrequented Passes'. De-Generation in 'The Buddhist Priest's Wife' by Schreiner, 'A Cross Line' by Egerton and 'The Un…
2013
This essay aims to show how different forms of de-generation in the social construction of fin de siècle female identity prove to be intentional instruments to defy conventional 19th century femininity and generate and circulate new female discoursivities in order to integrate forms of transgression into socially accepted behaviours. As critics have long argued the New Woman -the modern woman emerging from the disruption of the Angel in the House stereotype- has to be treated as a discursive process and a multilayered subject. The analysis of Schreiner’s “The Buddhist Priest’s Wife” (1891), Egerton’s “A Cross Line” (1893), and Grand’s “The Undefinable: A Fantasia” (1894), will highlight the…
Women's representation in french factums (1770-1789)
2015
This survey (PhD) sheds light on women’s status in the French society between 1770 and 1789, through the study of approximately 200 printed judicial briefs or factums. Although they were under men’s control, women could go to court. Wives had to obey their husbands. Nevertheless, they often showed their independence in judicial briefs. Widows could act by themselves, protect their families and influence the wealth distribution between the family members. “Girls” or “never-married women” are rare in judicial briefs, even though they could play important parts. The mother’s authority was recognized in judicial briefs. Other women also played the mother’s part instead of the real mother, e.g. …

Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to calculate the optimal cut-off point for discriminating smokers. The…

Role of menopause and hormone replacement therapy in sleep-disordered breathing
2020
There are suggestions that the loss of female sex hormones following menopause is critical for the development or progression of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). We conducted a review of the literature on the role of menopause and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in SDB risk. There is an increase in SDB during the menopausal transition period, but data on an effect beyond that of increasing age and changes in body habitus are weak or absent. Early community-based, observational studies reported a protective effect by HRT on SDB prevalence, but this could possibly be explained as a healthy user effect. Interventional studies of the effect of HRT on SDB are sparse, with only a few randomize…
