Effects of migration on women’s psychosocial health

2021

The aim of this chapter is to delineate the effects of migration on women’s psychological health, highlighting the burden that deciding on the journey and tackling the journey can determine at all stages of the migration process, underlining particular dangers women may be exposed. Broad aspects of gender and migration have been presented by Thara and Raman elsewhere in this volume (see Chapter 6), but here our focus is on the Mediterranean region.

Kobieca strona dyskursu onkologicznego. Empiryczne spojrzenie na demokratyzację wiedzy medycznej

2015

Proclivity of sexual harassment and blame attribution in journalism: experiential narratives of ghanaian female journalists

2021

Though the proclivity of sexual-related harassments in African journalism is high, the rates of reporting of these incidences and empirical studies are low. Using a gendered approach, the study presents and exploratory inquiry into the lived experiences and impressions of Ghanaian female journalists about incidences of sexual harassments. The study examines how female journalists experience both newsroom harassments and on-assignment sexual harassments including the role they play in quid pro quo exchanges, which are relevant aspects of sexual harassments in the profession. The study also looks at blame attribution strategies female journalists adopt in assigning blame for sexual harassment…

Voices from the past: memory and desire in Marina Warner’s radio play Brigit’s Cell

2020

This article examines Marina Warner’s radio play Birgitta’s Cell (BBC Radio 4), later published as Brigit’s Cell (2010) focusing on the themes of memory and desire. By drawing on Jan Assman’s theories on collective memory, the article shows how the two time levels Warner builds in the radio drama succeed in creating a fresh connection between women in the past and in the present as well as between individual and collective experience. The analysis of Warner’s work focuses on the dramatization of the story, taking into account the results offered by the use of the spoken word, fragments of dialogues, interior monologues, silences, enhanced, by its initial destination for the radio.

Farewell to Anarchy : The Myth of International Anarchy and Birth of Anarcophilia in International Relations

2018

This article scrutinizes the conceptual history of international anarchy. The argument purported here is that even though the idea of international anarchy is often seen as very central for the academic discipline of international relations, the concept is in fact not found from the forerunners or classics of the discipline. The assumption of international anarchy is commonly seen as a defining feature of a Realist school of international relations. Yet, the concept and especially its “Realist” implications are not to be found in the classics of Realism, from Thucydides, Machiavelli or Hobbes. The idea of “international anarchy” emerges quite tentatively during the First World War, in the w…

Likable viragos : The rise of the sexually assertive women in contemporary North American high school films

2019

The paper suggests the advent of a new type of character in a popular genre of American high school films, namely a precocious and sexually assertive young woman. Such characters are usually highly intelligent and manipulative women who seduce unsuspecting male partners, often their teachers, for emotional or practical gain. Although their actions may appear morally wrong, they are of ten depicted in a positive light. The analysis is based on a selection of films considered to be symptomatic of the larger tendencies. The first film under scrutiny is Election (1999), treated as a trailblazer for the more recent pictures such as Breathe In (2013) and Blame (2017). The article suggests that th…
