Radiation model of a TiO2-coated, quartz wool, packed-bed photocatalytic reactor
2010
The radiation field of a packed-bed photocatalytic reactor filled with quartz wool coated with titanium dioxide was modeled using the Monte Carlo technique and the following information: the radiation flux emitted by the lamps, the diameter size distribution of the quartz fiber cloth, the mass of quartz fibers and of TiO2 that was immobilized on the fiber surface as well as the refractive index and the spectral absorption coefficient of the materials of the system. Modeling predictions were validated with radiometer measurements of the transmitted radiation through the reactor, the root mean square error being < 9.7%. Finally, by means of a parametric study, the validated model was used to …
Development and evaluation of 3-dimensional printed models of the human tracheobronchial system for training in flexible bronchoscopy.
2017
OBJECTIVES Training and assessment of proper skills in flexible bronchoscopy are major educational goals for cardiothoracic residents. Therefore, we developed 3-dimensional (3D) printed models of the human tracheobronchial system for training and assessment of cardiothoracic residents in flexible bronchoscopy. METHODS Three models of normal (size/shape) human tracheobronchial anatomy were generated using a commercially available 3D printer. Ten residents (inexperienced: Group 1; experienced: Group 2) participated in this study with an experimental setting of initial assessment (Model 1), training (15 min, Model 2) and post-training assessment (Model 3). The time needed for flexible bronchos…
Effect of sheep wool fibres on thermal-insulation and mechanical properties of cement matrix
2015
The use of sheep wool as reinforcement of cement in order to produce mortar or plaster involves several advantages for environment and energy. Moreover, in several regions it is treated as a waste and, consequently, its employ is characterized by low cost. Aim of this paper is to evaluate the influence of wool fibres on thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of cement. The samples were prepared using wool fibres, obtained from a breed of Sicilian sheep, with three different length (i.e. 1 mm, 6 mm and 20 mm). Moreover, in order to evaluate the influence of fibre content, the samples were prepared by varying the fibres weight fraction up to maximum level. The thermal conductivity of …
Polish Translations of Anglo-American Literature and the Question of Ideology : From Romanticism to Twentieth-Century Avant-Gardes
2017
Ideology has always influenced translation, yet this fact became a topic of scholarly research only in the 1990s. The working of ideology in literary translations most often manifests itself as a conflict of value systems. From vast reservoir of foreign sources, the native axiology absorbs values that it needs to sustain its culture. It is not a coincidence that Anglo-American literature, propagating ideas of democracy and individual freedom, became popular in Poland in the first half of the nineteenth-century when Poland did not exist as a state. Only a century later, American literature was the most popular of all foreign literatures in pre-1939 Poland. World War II changed this situation…

Orlando, posterity and textual survival beyond the book
2022
This paper’s premise is that certain texts call for adaptation in the sense that they encapsulate anxieties about their posterity and their survival beyond their current material actualization. Orlando’s musings on death and immortality in Virginia Woolf’s eponymous novel are a case in point as they reflect a conflicted longing for the solidity of commemorative monuments and for the immateriality of memory-scapes. Lying “entombed” and “embalmed” in the medium of the book, words also rise “like an incantation” when brought to life by the reader (Orlando, Penguin Classics, 2000, 57). This passage is to be related to the modernist revival of interest in the works of Sir Thomas Browne which not…
Study regarding the physical-mechanical properties of knits for garments – pilling performance
2017
The effect of the pilling degradation results is an important decreasing in garment quality and a negative influence on the user’s comfort to wear. There are a lot factors, such as the yarn spinning system, fabric geometry and finishing operation, which affect the pilling performance. This research paper presents the investigation of fabric surface concerning pilling formation, especially knits, influenced by the fibrous composition. As samples were used knitted fabric panels, obtained from carded yarns, with fibers composition like cotton, wool or mixed one. Regarding fabric geometry 3 types were used – single jersey, 2x2 rib and moss stitch. In order to establish which of the yarns are mo…
Nanoscale Engineering in the Biosciences
2009
Biological matter is one of the most diverse and important classes of materials. Products of living organisms (wood, bone, cotton, wool, leather, coal, oil, drugs, etc.) are vital to humanity as foodstuffs, energy sources, engineering and construction materials, and chemicals; and by the way, they shape the environment of the biosphere.
