Economic Diversification and Empowerment of Local Human Resources: Could Singapore Be a Model for the GCC Countries?

This chapter analyses the similarities and differences between the GCC and Singapore with regard to economic diversification strategies. The key for a successful and, thus, sustainable diversification process for the GCC is to reduce the high dependence of the economic revenues away from the hydrocarbon sector. However, an ongoing concern is the continuing need of high foreign workforce that collides with the demands for greater employment opportunities for national citizens. The challenges of those nationalisation strategies will be examined at the example of the Sultanate of Oman.

Work-loss years among people diagnosed with diabetes : a reappraisal from a life course perspective

Aims Early exit from the workforce has been proposed to be one of the unfavorable consequences of diabetes. We examined whether early exit from the workforce differed between persons who were and were not diagnosed with diabetes during their work career. Methods The cohort included 12,726 individuals of the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study, born between 1934 and 1944. Using data from nationwide registers, the cohort was followed up from early adulthood until they transitioned into retirement or died. Abstract The current economic environment makes us acknowledge that the human factor is the most critical resource for all national economies which aspire to improve their competitiveness and innovativeness in a sustainable way. Talent is the engine of that and a growing number of countries have recognized the importance of talent competitiveness. This article aims to cast a light on this matter and to present the findings of the Global Talent Competitiveness Report form 2013 which shows us why “the war for talent” is a global one.
