Barriers to insulin initiation and intensification and how to overcome them

2009

Summary Aims:  To review published evidence and clinical experience of the perceived barriers to insulin initiation and intensification and to develop solutions for patient management. Method:  Literature review and workshop discussions. Results:  Many patients with diabetes fail to achieve targets for glycaemic control because of inappropriate use of insulin. Patients and health care professionals face many potential barriers to insulin initiation and intensification in primary care. These can be categorised as low motivation, lack of familiarity or experience and time constraints. Conclusion:  Solutions should be tailored to different health care settings. Strategies include improving edu…

Energy-Efficient Edge Computing Service Provisioning for Vehicular Networks: A Consensus ADMM Approach

2019

In vehicular networks, in-vehicle user equipment (UE) with limited battery capacity can achieve opportunistic energy saving by offloading energy-hungry workloads to vehicular edge computing nodes via vehicle-to-infrastructure links. However, how to determine the optimal portion of workload to be offloaded based on the dynamic states of energy consumption and latency in local computing, data transmission, workload execution and handover, is still an open issue. In this paper, we study the energy-efficient workload offloading problem and propose a low-complexity distributed solution based on consensus alternating direction method of multipliers. By incorporating a set of local variables for e…

An Aircraft Pilot Workload Sensing System

2021

The workload evaluation is of great importance for human error avoidance training, particularly in the use of complex systems that requires different and concurrent activities. The excessive workload harms human performance even with adverse outcomes. In the aviation field, certain flight maneuvers, such as take-off and landing, are characterized by great attention and workload demand to the pilot. Thus, a system capable of measuring pilots’ workload levels during flight could be beneficial to increase pilots’ performance. This work aims to study the initial feasibility of a device called Cockpit Pilot Warning System that monitors the pilot workload level during flight. With this aim, an ex…

Job Characteristics, Recovery Experiences and Occupational Well-being: Testing Cross-lagged Relationships across 1 Year

2013

The aim of the present study conducted among 274 Finnish employees was to examine the relationships between job characteristics, recovery experiences and occupational well-being across 1 year. We hypothesized that these relationships would follow normal causation, that is, job characteristics at T1 predict recovery experiences (detachment, relaxation, mastery and control at off-job time) and well-being (fatigue at work and work engagement) at T2, and recovery experiences at T1 predict well-being at T2. The structural equation modelling analyses lent support to the hypothesized normal causation model compared with the reversed causation and reciprocal models. However, only the longitudinal r…

Facilitation of goal-setting and follow-up in an internet intervention for health and wellness

2010

Chronic work-related stress and insufficient recovery from workload can gradually lead to problems with mental and physical health. Resources in healthcare are limited especially for preventive treatment, but low-cost support can be provided by Internet-based behavior change interventions. This paper describes the design of an Internet intervention which supports working-age people in managing and preventing stress-related health and wellness problems. The intervention is designed for early prevention and aims to motivate individuals to take responsibility for their own well-being. It allows them to choose the approach to take to address personally significant issues, while guiding them thr…

Stress at Work and Physical Load in Professional Sport

2018

Various professional sports have reached a high level of development. Stress at athletes’ work partly characterizes quality of psycho-emotional work environment. Psychological effects caused by stress frequently change into physical effects. At the same time, it should be noted that athletes do not receive adequate attention from the occupational health and safety point of view. The aim of the research was to investigate influence of work stress and physical load on professional volleyball athletes during trainings in comparison with volleyball competitions. The results reveal that the volleyball players are generally exposed to physical load (94%) and 82% - to work stress and other psycho-…

On the Visual Distraction Effects of Audio-Visual Route Guidance

2016

This is the first controlled quantitative analysis on the visual distraction effects of audio-visual route guidance in simulated, but ecologically realistic driving scenarios with dynamic maneuvers and self-controlled speed (N = 24). The audio-visual route guidance system under testing passed the set verification criteria, which was based on drivers’ preferred occlusion distances on the test routes. There were no significant effects of an upcoming maneuver instruction location (up, down) on the in-car display on any metric or on the experienced workload. The drivers’ median occlusion distances correlated significantly with median incar glance distances. There was no correlation between driv…

The Work of Special Education Teachers in the Tiered Support System : The Finnish Case

2023

This study investigated primary school special education teachers’ (SETs’) (N = 283) conceptions on their work descriptions and uses of pedagogical documents after a reform in the national support framework. The respondents of this survey reported working mostly in Tiers 1 and 2 when all their tasks (instruction, consultation, and managerial tasks) were considered. The responsibilities of the SETs were, however, more clearly defined in Tier 3. The SETs allocate their work autonomously, but their work description is related to their workload. Clarifications in work descriptions and further elaboration of school’s tiered support functions, emphasizing collaborative practices, are suggested. p…
