The author suggests a possible use of postmemory to analyse the contemporary family memory of the people of Silesia. Their memoirs about WW2 (such as working for the Wehrmacht, the Red Army invading Silesia, working in labour camps, nationality verification, displacements to Germany, and deportations to Siberia) bear signs of latent memory which is rarely revealed even to the next of kin. Present mainly within the family circle, within the local society, and among friends, these memoirs integrated Silesians and made them a unique community that considers itself a stigmatized minority. The author examines the commemoration of D-Day (June 6, 1944), exploring why war commemoration rituals still captivate thousands of people and illustrating attempts that have been made to shape a peaceful future in postwar Europe. Trzydzieści minionych lat podzielono na cztery podokresy i zaprezentowano dominujące w nich kwestie historyczne. Wybrane przykłady problemów z przeszłości i debaty, jakie toczyły i toczą się nadal na ich temat, świadczą dobitnie o ich ogromnym znaczeniu dla rozwoju relacji między Polakami a Niemcami. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono kwestii budowy w Niemczech pomnika polskich ofi ar II wojny światowej.
First World War Diaries: Making the Private Public

This article analyses several World War I Diaries written by soldiers on the Front. Starting with the circumstances of publication and their effects on the text, the article addresses the passage of these very private texts into public life, before turning to the role played by the diaries for the soldiers who write them. Studies of the diary as a genre are used to show how war diaries fit into the more general genre. Finally the article turns to the reception of these works, by studying what part literary distance may play for the soldiers keeping a diary, and by arguing that the task of making sense of these texts has been transferred to present-day readers.
