Comparing colonial differences: Baltic literary cultures as agencies of Europe’s internal others

ABSTRACTThe article discusses the Baltic colonial experience in historical and comparative perspective. It sketches the ways in which Baltic societies are best linked to theoretical discussions on postcolonial issues, and whether they might be looked upon in a more global context. The main question posed by the article is in what ways Baltic identity has been determined by processes of foreign settlement, occupation and colonization of the territory of each respective country and whether we can see Baltic societies as potential agencies of Europe’s internal others.

This article examines Anglo-American news media through a discourse-theoretical framework to study first, how celebrities are constituted as gendered humanitarian subjects acting on behalf of African problems, and second, how the concept of ‘Africa’ is produced, not only as a place, but also as a purpose in the world system. Artykuł przedstawia zastosowanie koncepcji zależności ścieżkowej (path dependence) do analizy wybranych trajektorii rozwojowych krajów (gospodarek), które zostały omówione przez Immanuela Wallersteina w pracach na temat nowoczesnego systemu-świata. W tekście zaprezentowano podstawowe założenia zależności ścieżkowej jako zjawiska oraz jako koncepcji pozwalającej na interpretację związków przyczynowo-skutkowych w rozwoju technologii oraz w bardziej złożonych opisach rozwoju społeczno-historycznego. Następnie szczegółowej analizie poddano trzy wybrane przypadki trajektorii gospodarek w okresie powstawania nowoczesnego systemu-świata: Polski, Wenecji i Anglii.

Resumen: Este artículo compara cuatro migraciones caribeñas hacia las cuatro metrópolis que dominan el Caribe hoy. Se trata de las migraciones desde territorios no-independientes del Caribe: desde Martinica/Guadalupe hacia Francia, Puerto Rico hacia los Estados Unidos, Surinam/Caribe Holandés hacia Holanda y Caribe Británico hacia el Reino Unido. El artículo no solamente compara los procesos de emigración sino también los procesos de incorporación al llegar a las cuatro metrópolis.
