Neck muscle ultrasonography of male weight-lifters, wrestlers and controls.

2007

The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the effect of different sport training regimens on the size of the neck semispinalis capitis muscle (SECM). The cross-sectional area (CSA) and the linear dimensions of the SECM were measured bilaterally by real-time ultrasonography. Ten young Finnish elite level weight-lifters. 8 freestyle wrestlers and 10 controls (all male) participated in the study. Muscle CSA was significantly larger in wrestlers than in weight-lifters or controls (P<0.001). There was no significant difference in size between the right and left SECM in any of the subject groups, but the variation between sides (smaller vs. larger) was significantly higher in wres…

Patterns of rapid weight loss in elite wrestlers

The aim of this study was to examine the methodology used for RWL and to compare different methods and source of influence practiced by various wrestling styles. The obtained results suggest that 67% of athletes had previously lost weight to compete. The wrestling coach represents the most influential person in terms of RWL strategies. The most frequently used methods were increased exercise, gradual dieting, training in heated room and sauna, for all competitors. The education of wrestling coaches is necessary in order to control and decrease the negative impact of RWL.

Rapid Weight Loss Coupled with Sport-Specific Training Impairs Heart Rate Recovery in Greco-Roman Wrestlers

2022

Wrestling is a sport that can be classified with the use of alternating aerobic–anaerobic metabolism with moderate but high-impact energy expenditure. Heart rate recovery (HRR) is the difference between heart rate during exercise and a certain amount of time after the start of recovery. The goal of this study was to determine the difference in HRR between two phases: high-intensity sport-specific training (HISST) combined with rapid weight loss (RWL)—phase 1 (P1) and HISST only—phase 2 (P2). Ten national-level wrestlers were included in this study. All participants underwent HISST along with RWL procedures for P1. Seven days later, during P2, an identical training session …

Prevalence of rapid weight loss in Olympic style wrestlers

2022

Background: The methodology applied for rapid weight loss (RWL) among elite wrestlers is quite unexplored. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence of sources of influence and methods used for RWL and to determine the differences between wrestling styles. Methods: A total of 229 wrestlers who competed at the World Championship held in Belgrade, Serbia, participated in this research. All respondents completed a questionnaire designed to evaluate RWL patterns in combat athletes. Participants were classified according to wrestling style: Greco-Roman, freestyle, and women wrestling. Results: Sixty-nine percent of wrestlers had previously lost weight to compete. Most respon…

Učinki naglega zmanjševanja telesne mase na moč oprijema pri reprezentančnih rokoborcih

2022

The effects of rapid weight loss (RWL) in combat sports athletes is an area that is not yet fully discovered. Therefore, the goal of this study was to determine the impact of weight loss on HGS (handgrip strength) in Greco-Roman wrestlers. This cross-over study included ten athletes examined for HGS during three time points for each hand. The first measurement – baseline (BL), was performed before we-ight reduction. The second measurement ‒ phase 1 (P1), was taken after high-intensity sports specific training (HISST) combined with RWL. In this phase, participants had to lose 5% of their body mass within three days, after which HISST was carried out (on day 3). The third measurement ‒ phase 2…
