Purpose The use of new headless compression screws (HCSs) for scaphoid fixation is growing, but the nonunion rate has remained constant. The aim of this study was to compare the stability of fixation resulting from four modern HCSs using a simulated fracture model to determine the optimal screw design(s). Methods We tested 40 fresh-frozen cadaver scaphoids treated with the Acumed Acutrak 2 mini (AA), the KLS Martin HBS2 midi (MH), the Stryker TwinFix (ST) and the Synthes HCS 3.0 with a long thread (SH). Immediate Effects of Vibration Transmitted to the Hand

Summary Three different research projects have been accomplished on the problems: biomechanical behaviour of the hand-arm-system; subjective sensation; physiological changes. Some of the main results were:—the wrist and—with smaller amplifications—the elbow show resonances at low vibration frequencies (10–20 Hz);—with constant acceleration subjective perception decreases with increasing frequency;—application of static grip force—without vibration—causes significant reduction of the skin temperature, which under vibration stress remains at the same lowered level.

The occupation of dental assistants (DAs) involves many health risks of the musculoskeletal system due to static and prolonged work, which can lead to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of MSDs in DAs in Germany. Methods: For this purpose, an online questionnaire analyzed 406 (401 female participants and 5 male participants, 401w/5m) DAs. Since 1984 the typical headless double threaded Herbert/Whipple screw is known in managing scaphoid fractures and scaphoid non-unions. We resume technical, biomechanical and histological aspects to point out advantages and disadvantages of this osteosynthesis. Our case review of 39 patients illustrate the same good results as achieved in treating scaphoid injuries, when using the Herbert/Whipple screw of a larger diameter for expanded indications other than scaphoid fractures, such as humeral- or radial-head fractures, Jones fractures and others.

Upper Limb Interventions.

Ultrasound has been reported to be a quick, cheap, and effective imaging modality to guide the interventional procedures in the musculoskeletal system. The use of ultrasound results in increased accuracy of needle placement associated with a reduction of complications. In the upper limb, ultrasound-guided procedures are applied to joints and soft tissues around the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand. This article reviews the clinical and technical aspects of the most common procedures performed in this anatomic area.

Estimation of equivalent dose to the eye lens and hands in wrist surgery using OSL dosimetry

The new recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP-2012 Publication 118) proposes reducing the limit of equivalent dose to the eye lens. For this reason, it is necessary to make estimates about received equivalent dose to the eye lens of medical staff. This study provides an alternative to dosimetry of the eye lens and hands, using dosimeters nanoDots based on optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) technology in wrist surgery procedure carried out with fluoroscopy.

Introduction: We aimed to assess the incidence and hospitalization rate of hip and "minor" fragility fractures in the Italian population.Methods: We carried out a 3-year survey at 10 major Italian emergency departments to evaluate the hospitalization rate of hip, forearm, humeral, ankle, and vertebral fragility fractures in people 45 years or older between 2004 and 2006, both men and women. Finger movements induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation change with hand posture, but not with coil position

We attempted to map the representations of movements in 2 normal subjects by delivering five transcranial magnetic stimuli (TMS) with a focal coil to each of a grid of positions over the primary motor area (M1). Isometric forces were recorded from the contralateral index finger. Maps were made with the hand in a semiflexed “neutral” position, and with the thumb and index finger opposed in a “pincer” grip. The electromyogram (EMG) was monitored to ensure relaxation. The wrist was immobilized. In the neutral position, TMS at almost all positions produced abduction.
