Purpose To examine the ability to discriminate phonemic length and the association of this ability with reading accuracy, reading speed, and spelling accuracy in Finnish children throughout Grades 1–3. Method Reading-disabled (RDFR, n = 35) and typically reading children (TRFR, n = 69) with family risk for dyslexia and typically reading control children (TRC, n = 80) were tested once in each grade of Grades 1–3 using a phonemic length discrimination task. Is a specialised training of phonological awareness indicated in every preschool child?

<i>Objective and Methods: </i>In a prospective study 218 preschool children were enrolled (stratified in 2 training programs, one specialized for phonologic awareness in order to prevent dyslexia, the other consisting in training of general perception) during the last year of kindergarten. Do handwritten words magnify lexical effects in visual word recognition?

Published online: 27 Oct 2015 An examination of how the word recognition system is able to process handwritten words is fundamental to formulate a comprehensive model of visual word recognition. Previous research has revealed that the magnitude of lexical effects (e.g., the word-frequency effect) is greater with handwritten words than with printed words. In the present lexical decision experiments, we examined whether the quality of handwritten words moderates the recruitment of top-down feedback, as reflected in word-frequency effects. Effect of duration of breastfeeding on neuropsychological development at 10 to 12years of age in a cohort of healthy children

Aim The aim of this article was to explore the effect of duration of breastfeeding on neurocognitive development. Method The long-term effect of breastfeeding on neurodevelopment was examined through a battery of neuropsychological tests in 1403 children (693 females, 710 males; mean age 11y 9mo [SD 6mo], range: 10y 3mo-12y 8mo) who were originally recruited at 6 to 12weeks of age for a clinical trial on acellular pertussis vaccines. Authorship in Facilitated Communication: An Analysis of 11 Cases

Abstract. We studied the authorship of messages produced through facilitated communication (FC) for all users of FC in two comprehensive schools in a small city in Finland. The participants were 11 children with intellectual disabilities, including autism, all having used FC from 1 to 3 years. The test conditions involved open and blind information-passing tasks in which the participants were directed to write down the contents of written or pictorial stimuli. Identifying Drivers of Destination Attractiveness in a Competitive Environment: A Comparison of Approaches

Abstract This study applies a demand-side analysis framework to assess drivers of destination attractiveness in consideration of competitor destinations. The framework, consisting of a relevance–determinance analysis (RDA) and a competitive-performance analysis (CPA), is further benchmarked against competing variants of importance–performance analysis (IPA).
