Palermo strana e meravigliosa.

The soundscape of the ceremonies for the beatification of St Teresa of Ávila in the Crown of Aragon, 1614

2015

[EN] The beatification of Saint Teresa of Ávila in October 1614 gave rise to widespread celebrations in many of the cities and towns of the Iberian Peninsula. Printed relaciones describing these celebrations, despite their limitations —in terms of political agenda, propaganda, rivalry and literary style— can nevertheless provide information about musical experience and can help to recreate the ephemeral soundscapes of these events. This article will focus on the ceremonies held in the Crown of Aragon, especially Saragossa and Barcelona, taking into consideration the typology of different musics —heraldic, divine and festive— and factors such as the moment in time, function, dynamic, urban s…

The language-(in)dependence of writing skills: translation as a tool in writing process research and writing instruction

2014

A pilot study was conducted in which 6 students with L1 German had to produce a German version of a text they had composed in their L2 English. The goals were to explore (a) in what respects the ability of advanced university English students to express themselves in their L2 English differs from their ability to do so in their L1 German, and (b) for which aspects of writing the implementation of translation exercises is useful as a tool to improve writing skills. The methods of data collection used were think-aloud and keystroke logging. In the analysis, special emphasis was placed on text-level errors as opposed to formal, lexical and grammatical errors. In their L1 versions, students wer…

Automatic Reengineering in MDA Using Rewriting Logic as Transformation Engine

2005

Legacy systems are information systems that have been developed by means of methods, tools and database management systems that have become obsolete, but they are still being used due to their reliability. As time goes on, the maintenance of this software becomes more complex, expensive and painful. The MOMENT framework supports automatic formal model transformations in MDA. This model transformation approach is based on the algebraic specification of models and benefits from mature term rewriting system technology to perform model transformation using rewriting logic. In this paper, we present how we apply this formal transformation mechanism to recover a legacy relational database, obtain…

Feminist Perspectives on Teaching Masculinities

2019

The chapter discusses the positive public role of gay and queer masculinities in their intersection with other identity configurations (class, race, and able-bodiedness). It presents an overview of the main perspectives on social construction and representation of homosexual masculinities within educational and academic settings using critical masculinities theory. While challenging homonormativity in research and education representations of the ‘rational man’ and ‘macho ethics’ of male researchers who ‘discover’, ‘conquer’ investigate ‘systematically’ or ‘rigorously’ are analyzed. Criticizing the play of inexpressiveness and emotionlessness objectivity as criterion of academic writing, re…
