Validation of a method for the determination of boron in ceramic materials by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry

Abstract A method is proposed for boron determination in ceramic materials, boracic raw materials and ceramics frits of different compositions by wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence technique. The instrumental conditions were studied and the sample preparation procedures were optimized. The reference method used was the potentiometric titration of mannitol–boric complex acid and the technique was optimized for the determination of B 2 O 3 in each of the materials used. Non-destructive Approach to Multilayer Objects: XRF Analysis of Gilt and Enamelled Metals of the Medieval Cross of Rosciolo

Abstract The penetration of X-rays is usually a limitation to the application of XRF analysis to multilayered materials, however it is possible, by software tools based on the fundamental parameters method, to overcome this problem and estimate thickness and composition of each layer. The cross of Rosciolo is a significant example of multilayer object: it is made of a wood core with attached gilt silver sheets and decorated with enamels. Measurements were carried out in situ and the PyMCA software was employed. The values of gilding thickness, Au/Hg ratios and Cu content in the silver sheets, and enamel's composition are discussed.

This paper is an analytical study of the possibility of applying the linear range of the substitution-dilution method to correct the matrix effect in quantitative analysis by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy. A systematic procedure for the preparation of optimized sets of calibration solid standards for the x-ray fluorescence analysis of ceramic materials is described. The matrix of the contents of the N analytes in the n standards (n ≥ N) is calculated from an n x N experimental design matrix, and from the upper and lower limits of the calibration range for each of the N analytes. Middle Palaeolithic flint procurement in Central Mediterranean Iberia: IMplications for human mobility.

Different flint types from the Middle Palaeolithic site of Abrigo de la Quebrada (Chelva, Valencia) are characterized,  both macro- and microscopically, and compared with types found at other localities in the region. Although procurement predominantly concerned the immediate vicinity of sites, our results show the presence of the same types in assemblages separated by distances of up to 120 km. The long distances involved are suggestive of a pattern of North-South mobility of human groups along the coastline of central Mediterranean Iberia.

A multivariate statistical approach of X-ray fluorescence characterization of a large collection of reverse glass paintings

We present an X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) study combined with a multivariate approach that allow to detect compositional differences and similarities among the glass supports of a large set of reverse glass paintings belonging to the collection of the Mistretta museum. Reverse painting on glass is an old decorative technique used since the Roman time consisting in applying a cold paint layer on the reverse side of a glass support. Partial least squares X-ray fluorescence determination of trace elements in sediments from the estuary of Nerbioi-Ibaizabal River.

The feasibility of partial least squares (PLS) regression modeling of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectra of estuarine sediments has been evaluated as a tool for rapid trace element content monitoring. Multivariate PLS calibration models were developed to predict the concentration of Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, V and Zn in sediments collected from different locations across the estuary of the Nerbioi-Ibaizabal River (Metropolitan Bilbao, Bay of Biscay, Basque Country).
