Double Endocrine Neoplasia in a Renal Transplant Recipient: Case Report and Review of the Literature

2011

Abstract Introduction The incidence of cancer compared for age groups is 3–4 times higher in transplant recipients than the general population. The increased risk is related to immunosuppressive therapy as well as the use of increasingly older donors and recipients. Although cardiovascular disease with a functioning transplant is the leading cause of death (47%), cancer mortality is significant especially among older patients. However, the most frequent posttransplantation cancers relate to hemolymphopoietic organs and skin, whereas the occurrence of solid tumors elsewhere is rare. Herein we have described a rare case of synchronous double malignancy of endocrine organs (thyroid-adrenal) in…

The internal calcar septum and its contact with the virtual stem in THR: a computer tomographic evaluation.

2003

The internal calcar septum is a ridge of cortical bone protruding from the inner cortical wall of the proximal femur into the medullary canal. It extends from the lesser trochanter into the femoral neck and narrows the femoral cavity in its dorsal third. This region is essential for THR stability, but the degree of contact between the septum and standard THR implants has never been studied. We obtained CT scans of 50 arthrotic hip joints from patients requiring THR. Virtual stems (50 straight/wedge-shaped and 50 anatomic stems) were placed in CT images of the femora using a PC-based preoperative planning unit. The dimensions of the septum, degree and location of contact between the septum a…

Hepatic Hilar and Sectorial Vascular and Biliary Anatomy in Right Graft Adult Live Liver Donor Transplantation

2008

Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to analyze vascular and biliary variants at the hilar and sectorial level in right graft adult living donor liver transplantation. Methods From January 2003 to June 2007, 139 consecutive live liver donors underwent three-dimensional computed tomography (3-D CT) reconstructions and virtual 3-D liver partitioning. We evaluated the portal (PV), arterial (HA), and biliary (BD) anatomy. Results The hilar and sectorial biliary/vascular anatomy was predominantly normal (70%–85% and 67%–78%, respectively). BD and HA showed an equal incidence (30%) of hilar anomalies. BD and PV had a nearly identical incidence of sectorial abnormalities (64.7% and 66.2…

Peliosis hepatis: spectrum of imaging findings

2006

OBJECTIVE. It is important to recognize the imaging characteristics of peliosis hepatis because peliotic lesions may mimic several different types of focal hepatic lesions CONCLUSION. We illustrate the spectrum of imaging findings of peliosis hepatis, including sonography, CT, MR, and angiography.

The influence of electrostimulation on mechanical and morphological characteristics of the triceps surae.

1994

The present study assessed the effects of training using electrostimulation of muscle (EMS) on the torque-angular velocity and torque-angle relationships, and the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the triceps surae. Twelve physical education students, divided into two groups (6 controls, 6 experimental), participated in the experiment. The EMS sessions were undertaken using a 'Complex-type' stimulator. Flexible elastomer electrodes were used. The current used discharged pulses lasting for 200 microseconds at a frequency of 70 Hz. The durations of contraction and rest were 5 and 15 s, respectively. The session lasted for 10 min for each muscle. The training regimen was three sessions per week fo…

Virtopsy and Living Individuals Evaluation Using Computed Tomography in Forensic Diagnostic Imaging

2019

The applications of forensic radiology involve both Virtopsy both studies on living people - to demonstrate bone age, search for foreign bodies, such as voluntary injection of drug ovules or surgical sponges accidentally forgotten, to assess gunshot wounds, to evaluate injuries by road accidents, and cases of violence or abuse (both in adults and in children). Computed tomography is the most used imaging tool used in forensic pathology and its indications are mainly focused on cases of unnatural deaths or when a crime is suspected. It is preferred over the standard autopsy in selected cases, such as in putrefied, carbonized or badly damaged bodies; or as a preliminary evaluation in mass dis…

Traumatic atlanto-axial rotatory subluxation after surgical correction of prominent ears: Case report and review of the literature

2019

International audience; Corrective surgery of prominent ears may be justified for social or aesthetic reasons during childhood or adulthood. Post-operative complications occur in approximately 0 to 8.4% of cases. This case describes a rare atlanto-axoid rotatory subluxation after bilateral surgical correction of prominent ears under general anesthesia. Orthopedic treatment was done after two months of medical roaming outside of our center. The one-year post-operative clinic consultation and radiological exam were normal. Only the psychological impact of the episode remained. Traumatic atlanto-axial rotatory subluxation is a rare complication but should be considered after post-operative tor…

Lung nodule 25 years after lobectomy - recurrence of bronchial carcinoid

2020

OBJECTIVE Introduction: Bronchopulmonary (BP) carcinoids are low and intermediate grade tumors, seen in adults between fourth to sixth decade, where no clear association with tobacco smoking is established. Most often they are sporadic lesions (95%). Half of patients have no symptoms and the tumor is incidentally found on a chest x- ray. BP carcinoids have a good prognostic, however there is a risk of distant metastasis and the recurrences are frequent. Therefore a crucial role of vigilant follow- up, extending far beyond 5 years. PATIENTS AND METHODS Case presentation: We report a case of 73 years old women, with history of recurrent pulmonary infections, and positive family history for lu…

Prognostic value of initial chest CT findings for clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19

2020

Rationale: To identify whether the initial chest computed tomography (CT) findings of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are helpful for predicting the clinical outcome. Methods: A total of 224 patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 who underwent chest CT examination within the first day of admission were enrolled. CT findings, including the pattern and distribution of opacities, the number of lung lobes involved and the chest CT scores of lung involvement, were assessed. Independent predictors of adverse clinical outcomes were determined by multivariate regression analysis. Adverse outcome were defined as the need for mechanical ventilation or death. Results: Of 224 pat…
