Effects of high-pressure on the structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of monazite-type PbCrO4

We have performed an experimental study of the crystal structure, lattice dynamics, and optical properties of PbCrO 4 (the mineral crocoite) at ambient and high pressures. In particular, the crystal structure, Raman-active phonons, and electronic band gap have been accurately determined. X-ray-diffraction, Raman, and optical absorption experiments have allowed us also to completely characterize two pressure-induced structural phase transitions. The first transition is from a monoclinic structure to another monoclinic structure. The typical complications of Crohn's disease concerns small and large bowel. The full thickness inflammation of the intestinal wall develops in strictures, fistulas and abdominal abscesses. Nowadays the most accepted therapeutic for intra-abdominal abscess option is antibiotic therapy and, in case of need, percutaneous drainage of the abscess. If the abscess passes through the pelvic foramen the abscess can involve the inferior limbs. The technique which combines high resolution spectroscopy with imaging capability is a powerful tool to extract fundamental information in X-ray Astrophysics and Cosmology. This paper summarizes a preliminary design concept for the focal plane assembly of the X-ray Integral Field Unit on the Athena spacecraft, an imaging microcalorimeter that will enable high spectral resolution imaging and point-source spectroscopy. The instrument's sensor array will be a ~ 3840-pixel transition edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeter array, with a frequency domain multiplexed SQUID readout system allowing this large-format sensor array to be operated within the thermal constraints of the instrument's cryogenic system. ATHENA is the L2 mission selected by ESA to pursue the science theme “Hot and Energetic Universe.” One of the two focal plane instruments is the X-ray Integral Field Unit, an array of TES microcalorimeters operated at T $$<$$ 100 mK. To allow the X-ray photons focused by the telescope to reach the detector, windows have to be opened on the cryostat thermal shields. X-ray transparent filters need to be mounted on these open windows to attenuate the IR radiation from warm surfaces, to attenuate RF electromagnetic interferences on TES sensors and SQUID electronics, and to protect the detector from contamination. Preliminary studies on the synthesis of alkaline-free large crystals of ZSM-5

Single crystals of ZSM-5 were synthesized in three systems containing Na + -TPA, Li + -TPA, and NH 4 + -TPA, respectively. Applying a reaction mixture of the molar composition 8 TPA + 123(NH 4 ) 2 O + Al 2 O 3 + 59 SiO 2 + 2280 H 2 O, alkaline-free, homogeneous, and pure single crystals of ZSM-5 were prepared up to a length of 350 μm. The crystal size and yield were found to be dependent on the water content of the starting reaction mixture and on the type of aluminium source; for example, boehmite and aluminiumtriisopropylate.
An improved goniometer head for high-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction

A reliable and inexpensive goniometer head has been designed. Its stability, resulting from its compact construction, makes it very suitable for accurate measurements. Moreover, its space-saving design facilitates its application in X-ray data collection using charge-coupled device (CCD) detectors. This head has been improved for high-temperature measurements and has been tested by comparison of accurate K0.88Rb0.12TiOPO4data collected both at room temperature and at 973 K on the same crystal. The excellent structure results obtained at 973 K during the 360 h of measurements prove the stability of the goniometer head.
X-ray-absorption spectroscopy ofNd3+-exchanged β-alumina crystal

The results of x-ray-absorption spectroscopy investigations of ${\mathrm{Nd}}^{3+}$ ions in a nearly fully exchanged (93%) sodium \ensuremath{\beta}-alumina crystal are reported. The ${\mathrm{Nd}}^{3+}$ local environment is reconstructed using a multishell best fit procedure and is compared with existing structural models. The experimental extended x-ray-absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) spectra are also compared with model ab initio FEFF6 calculations based on the x-ray-diffraction data for the ${\mathrm{Nd}}^{3+}$ ions located at the BR(2d) and interstitial A(6h) sites of \ensuremath{\beta}-alumina.
