Trumpler 14 and 16 in the Carina nebula

2017

We present the first extensive spectroscopic study of the global population in star clusters Trumpler 16, Trumpler 14, and Collinder 232 in the Carina nebula, using data from the Gaia-ESO Survey, down to solar-mass stars. In addition to the standard homogeneous survey data reduction, a special processing was applied here because of the bright nebulosity surrounding Carina stars. We find about 400 good candidate members ranging from OB types down to slightly subsolar masses. About 100 heavily reddened early-type Carina members found here were previously unrecognized or poorly classified, including two candidate O stars and several candidate Herbig Ae/Be stars. Their large brightness makes th…

XMM sources in Blanco 1

2005

We present an X-ray study of the high metallicity young open cluster Blanco 1 based on XMM-Newton data. X-ray spectroscopy of cluster members is presented for the first time as well as new X-ray distribution functions of late-type stars. We detected all known dF and dG stars in the EPIC field and 80% and 90% of dK and dM stars, respectively. The X-ray spectral analysis of the X-ray brightest cluster stars and X-ray color analysis of a larger sample show that a model with two temperatures (at about 0.3 and 1keV) explains the quiescent activity phase spectra. We discuss also the nature of unidentified X-ray sources in the observed region and their X-ray spectral properties. Cone search capabi…

Chandra X-ray sources in Orion Nebula Cluster

2003

In this first of two companion papers on the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), we present our analysis of a 63ks Chandra HRC-I observation that yielded 742 X-ray detections within the 30'x30' field of view. To facilitate our interpretation of the X-ray image, here we collect a multiwavelength catalog of nearly 2900 known objects in the region by combining 17 different catalogs from the recent literature. We define two reference groups: an infrared sample, containing all objects detected in the K band, and an optical sample comprising low-extinction, well-characterized ONC members. We show for both samples that field object contamination is generally low. Our X-ray sources are primarily low-mass O…

X-ray Luminosities in Blanco 1

2005

We present X-ray Luminosity Distributions (XLDs) of late-type members (dF, dG, dK, dM) of the Blanco 1 cluster, based on ROSAT-HRI data and new astrometric-photometric membership obtained from the GSC-II project. For the first time we present the XLD of dM stars of this cluster. The high metallicity of Blanco 1 allows us to investigate the role of chemical composition on the coronal emission of late-type stars. Comparison between X-ray Luminosity Distributions of Blanco 1 and Pleiades, NGC 2516 and {alpha} Per suggests a possible metallicity effect in dM stars. X-ray sources in NGC 752

2008

While observational evidence shows that most of the decline in a star's X-ray activity occurs between the age of the Hyades (~8x10^8yr) and that of the Sun, very little is known about the evolution of stellar activity between these ages. To gain information on the typical level of coronal activity at a star's intermediate age, we studied the X-ray emission from stars in the 1.9Gyr old open cluster NGC 752. We analysed a ~140ks Chandraobservation of NGC 752 and a ~50ks XMM-Newtonobservation of the same cluster. We detected 262 X-ray sources in the Chandra data and 145 sources in the XMM-Newton observation. Around 90% of the catalogued cluster members within Chandra's field-of-view are detect…

High Resolution Spectroscopy of 4U 1728-34 from a Simultaneous Chandra-RXTE Observation

2004

We report on a simultaneous Chandra and RossiXTE observation of the LMXB atoll bursting source 4U 1728-34 performed on 2002 March 3-5. We fitted the 1.2-35 keV continuum spectrum with a blackbody plus a Comptonized component. An overabundance of Si by a factor of ~2 with respect to Solar abundance is required for a satisfactory fit. Large residuals at 6-10 keV can be fitted by a broad (FWHM ~ 1.6 keV) Gaussian emission line, or, alternatively, by absorption edges associated with Fe I and Fe XXV at ~7.1 keV and ~9 keV, respectively. In this interpretation, we find no evidence of a broad, or narrow Fe Kalpha line, between 6 and 7 keV. We tested our alternative modeling of the iron Kalpha regi…

Neutron Star Radius-to-mass Ratio from Partial Accretion Disk Occultation as Measured through Fe Kα Line Profiles

2020

We present a new method to measure the radius-to-mass ratio (R/M) of weakly magnetic, disc-accreting neutron stars by exploiting the occultation of parts of the inner disc by the star itself. This occultation imprints characteristic features on the X-ray line profile that are unique and are expected to be present in low mass X-ray binary systems seen under inclinations higher than ~65 degrees. We analyse a NuSTAR observation of a good candidate system, 4U 1636-53, and find that X-ray spectra from current instrumentation are unlikely to single out the occultation features owing to insufficient signal-to-noise. Based on an extensive set of simulations we show that large-area X-ray detectors o…

The X‐ray emission of the supernova remnant W49B: indications of a jet‐like explosion

2007

We report on an XMM-Newton EPIC observation of the galactic supernova remnant W49B, which, on the basis of previous Chandra observations, has been supposed to be the first remnant of a gamma-ray burst discovered in our galaxy. We performed a spatially resolved spectral analysis, which revealed oversolar abundances of Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe. Moreover, a high overabundance of Ni is required in the bright central elongated region. Our results support a scenario where the remnant was generated by an asymmetric bipolar explosion where the eastern jet is hotter and more Fe-rich than the western one. An alternative interpretation which associates the X-ray emission with spherically symmetric ejecta…
