Retroaortic left renal vein: a report of six cases

1992

Six cases of retroaortic left renal vein have been studied, two in corpses and four by means of Computed Tomography. Any previous pathology has been rejected. The total number of dissected specimens was 116, whereas the patients with non-pathological retroperitoneum studied by CT numbered 170. In our six cases, the left renal vein formed a single trunk of considerable size, retroaortic position and directed obliquely towards the inferior vena cava.

Necrotizing fasciitis of the face: A life-threatening condition

2009

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a highly aggressive infectious process, polymicrobial in nature, involving soft tissues with a high risk of rapid spread through superficial and deep fascial planes and muscular layers. Cervical NF is quite rare, is mostly of odontogenic origin, and may be complicated by descendant mediastinitis with a very high mortality rate. Systemic conditions impairing the patient's immune competence, such as diabetes, may play a predisposing role. An effective treatment strategy includes prompt diagnosis (clinical findings, local microbiological tests, blood culture and, if deemed necessary, histopathology), broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy as early as possible which sho…

Cardiac Micro–Computed Tomography Imaging of the Aging Coronary Vasculature

2012

Background— Alterations at the level of the coronary circulation with aging may play an important role in the evolution of age-associated changes in left ventricular (LV) fibrosis and function. However these age-associated changes in the coronary vasculature remain poorly defined primarily due to the lack of high resolution imaging technologies. The current study was designed to utilize cardiac micro–computed tomography (micro-CT) technology as a novel imaging strategy, to define the 3-dimensional coronary circulation in the young and aged heart and its relationship to LV fibrosis and function. Methods and Results— Young (2 months old; n=10) and aged (20 months old; n=10) Fischer rats unde…

Effects of Nrf2 deficiency on bone microarchitecture in an experimental model of osteoporosis

2014

Objective. Redox imbalance contributes to bone fragility. We have evaluated the in vivo role of nuclear factor erythroid derived 2-related factor-2 (Nrf2), an important regulator of cellular responses to oxidative stress, in bone metabolism using a model of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Methods. Ovariectomy was performed in both wild-type and mice deficient in Nrf2 (Nrf2-/-). Bone microarchitecture was analyzed by CT. Serum markers of bone metabolism were also measured. Reactive oxygen species production was determined using dihydrorhodamine 123. Results. Sham-operated or ovariectomized Nrf2 -/- mice exhibit a loss in trabecular bone mineral density in femur, accompanied by a reduction in co…

Genetic and Environmental Influence on Structural Strength of Weight-Bearing and Non-Weight-Bearing Bone: A Twin Study

2007

A bivariate genetic analysis among 217 older female twin pairs showed that, although the structural strength of tibia and radius are mainly regulated by same genetic and environmental factors, the tibia is more affected by environment. Introduction: The habitual loading environment of the bone may modulate the relative contribution of genetic and environmental factors to bone structure. The purpose of this study was to estimate the contribution of the common and site-specific genetic and environmental factors to interindividual variation in compressive structural strength of the weight-bearing tibia and non–weight-bearing radius. Materials and Methods: pQCT scans were obtained from both mem…

Synthesis and pharmacological characterization of beta2-adrenergic agonist enantiomers: zilpaterol.

2009

The beta-adrenergic agonist 1 (zilpaterol) is used as production enhancer in cattle. Binding experiments of separated enantiomers on recombinant human beta(2)-adrenergic and mu-opioid receptors and functional studies showed that the (-)-1 enantiomer accounts for essentially all the beta(2)-adrenergic agonist activity and that it exhibits less affinity toward the mu-opioid receptor than (+)-1, which is a mu-opioid receptor antagonist. X-ray crystallography revealed the absolute configuration of (-)-1 to be 6R,7R.

The defined adsorption site of sodium on the TiO2(110)–(1×1) surface

2004

The adsorption site of sodium on the TiO2(1 1 0)–(1 × 1) surface was studied by extended X-ray absorption fine structure. For coverage ranging between 0.25 and 0.5 ML, we find that sodium is on an ‘in-between' site where it is bound to two bridging oxygen atoms at 2.25 Å and one in-plane oxygen atom at 2.40 Å, in full agreement with DFT calculations. At higher coverage the site becomes an hollow site where the sodium atom is equidistant to the three oxygen atoms at 2.30 Å, while metallic sodium clusters are also formed at the surface.

Defects in yttrium aluminium perovskite and garnet crystals: atomistic study

2000

Native and impurity point defects in both yttrium aluminium perovskite (YAP) and garnet (YAG) crystals are studied in the framework of the pair-potential approximation coupled with the shell model description of the lattice ions. The calculated formation energies for native defects suggest that the antisite disorder is preferred over the Frenkel and Schottky-like disorder in both YAP and YAG. The calculated values of the distortion caused by the antisite YAl x in the lattice turn out to be in an excellent agreement with the EXAFS measurements. In non-stoichiometric compounds, the calculated reaction energies indicate that excess Y2 O3 or Al2 O3 is most likely to be accommodated by the forma…

Oxidation-driven changes of the in-plane magnetic surface anisotropies of the Fe(110)/Al interface

2003

Abstract Thin epitaxial iron films grown on W(1 1 0) were covered by ultrathin epitaxial aluminium layers of varying thicknesses from 0.2 to 0.6 nm and subsequently naturally oxidized in situ with oxygen exposures up to 150 L. Correlations between the oxidation states of the Al covers and changes of the in-plane magnetic anisotropies at the Fe(1 1 0)/Al interface were discussed on the basis of results from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr magnetometry measurements. The Al coverage decreases the second-order in-plane surface anisotropy of the Fe(1 1 0) surface. Whereas for the thinnest Al covers, the second-order in-plane magnetic surface anisotropy decr…
