Epistemic Aspects of Action Systems

2015

The theory of action conventionally distinguishes real actions and doxastic (or epistemic) actions. Real actions (or as we put it—praxeological actions) bring about changes in material objects of the environment external to the agent. Epistemic actions concern mental states of agents—they bring about changes of agents’ knowledge or beliefs about the environment as well as about other beliefs. Some logical issues concerning knowledge, action, truth, and the epistemic status of agents are discussed. In this context the frame and ramification problems are also analyzed. The key issue raised in this chapter is that of non-monotonicity of reasoning. A reasoning is non-monotonic if some conclusio…

Synthesis and Spectroscopic Properties of Silica−Dye−Semiconductor Nanocrystal Hybrid Particles

2010

We prepared silica-dye-nanocrystal hybrid particles and studied the energy transfer from semiconductor nanocrystals (= donor) to organic dye molecules (= acceptor). Multishell CdSe/CdS/ZnS semiconductor nanocrystals were adsorbed onto monodisperse Stöber silica particles with an outer silica shell of thickness 2-23 nm containing organic dye molecules (Texas Red). The thickness of this dye layer has a strong effect on the energy transfer efficiency, which is explained by the increase in the number of dye molecules homogeneously distributed within the silica shell, in combination with an enhanced surface adsorption of nanocrystals with increasing dye amount. Our conclusions were underlined by…

NiO režģa dinamikas pētījumi ar apgriezto Monte-Karlo metodi

2022

NiO režģa dinamika tika izpētīta pie septiņām temperatūrām no 10K līdz 300K, izmantojot Ni K malas rentgenabsorbcijas spektroskopiju apvienojumā ar apgrieztā Monte Carlo simulācijām. Salīdzinājumam veica režģa dinamikas aprēķinus ar empīrisko potenciālu. Potenciāla modeli apstiprināja, salīdzinot eksperimentālos NiO Ni K malas izstieptās rentgenabsorbcijas sīkstruktūras (EXAFS) spektrus ar molekulārās dinamikas modelēšanas rezultātiem pie 300 K. Ni-O un Ni-Ni atomu pāru vidējās kvadrātiskās relatīvās nobīdes (MSRD) noteica ar divām metodēm un salīdzināja ar literatūrā pieejamajiem datiem.

Is the leadership of the Brent-WTI threatened by China's new crude oil futures market?

2020

Abstract The recent listing of a new crude oil futures contract on the Shanghai International Energy Exchange (INE) has reopened the debate over whether crude oil produced in different countries or locations constitutes a unified world oil market. The aim of this paper is to study the information flows among Brent, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and the new Medium Sour Crude Oil (SC) futures contract listed on INE futures markets to assess whether the trading of this new futures contract has altered the dominant role of the most traded oil benchmarks in the world. A multiple regression model identifies the Brent futures market as the most influential market in the oil price discovery process…

A classification scheme for mobilization regions of bacterial plasmids

2003

Transmissible plasmids can be classified according to their mobilization ability, as being conjugative (self-transmissible) or mobilizable (transmissible only in the presence of additional conjugative functions). Naturally occurring mobilizable plasmids carry the genetic information necessary for relaxosome formation and processing, but lack the functions required for mating pair formation. Mobilizable plasmids have a tremendous impact in horizontal gene transfer in nature, including the spread of antibiotic resistance. However, analysis of their promiscuity and diversity has attracted less attention than that of conjugative plasmids. This review will focus on the analysis of the diversity …

cis-[(η5-C5H5)Fe(η1-CO)(μ-CO)]2, the poor relative betweencisandtranstautomers. A theoretical study of the gas-phase Fe L3-edge and C and O K-edge XA…

2021

The relative stability oftrans-[(η5-C5H5)Fe(η1-CO)(μ-CO)]2(trans-I) andcis-Itautomers in a vacuum and in solvents with different dielectric constants (ε) has been investigated by exploiting density functional theory (DFT). Theoretical results indicate that, in agreement with experimental evidence,trans-Iis more stable thancis-Iin a vacuum (∼1.5 kcal mol−1;ε= 1), while the opposite is true in media withε> 7. Differently from solution, DFT outcomes pertaining to the vapor-phasecis-I⇆trans-Iequilibrium at T = 368 K, the temperature at which the Fe L2,3-edges and the C and O K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) data ofIhave been recorded, ultimately indicate thetrans-Ipredominance (∼93…

The MBOAT7-TMC4 Variant rs641738 Increases Risk of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Individuals of European Descent

2016

Background & Aims Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a leading cause of liver damage and is characterized by steatosis. Genetic factors increase risk for progressive NAFLD. A genome-wide association study showed that the rs641738 C>T variant in the locus that contains the membrane bound O-acyltransferase domain-containing 7 gene (MBOAT7, also called LPIAT1) and transmembrane channel-like 4 gene (TMC4) increased the risk for cirrhosis in alcohol abusers. We investigated whether the MBOAT7-TMC4 is a susceptibility locus for the development and progression of NAFLD. Methods We genotyped rs641738 in DNA collected from 3854 participants from the Dallas Heart Study (a multi-ethnic…

Coprology of Panthera tigris altaica and Felis bengalensis euptilurus from the Russian Far East

2007

Fecal samples from the Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) and the Amur cat (Felis bengalensis euptilurus) from Far Eastern Russia, were examined for parasites. A natural sedimentation methodology was used and a complete examination of all the sediment was performed. This fecal investigation allowed us to isolate and identify several developmental stages of gastrointestinal, hepatic, and respiratory parasites. Five parasites were found from P. t. altaica: 11 trematodes (Platynosomum fastosum) and 4 nematodes (Strongyloides sp., Ancylostomatidae, Toxascaris leonina, and Toxocara cati). Five parasites were found from F. b. euptilurus: 1 cestode (Diplopylidium sp.) and 4 nematodes (Trichu…

Helminth parasites in faecal samples from the endangered Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus).

2011

The Iberian lynx is the most endangered felid in the world. Enteropathogens may threaten its survival, and therefore we analysed faecal samples from 66 different individuals (37 males and 29 females), the largest population representation studied to date. The samples were obtained from November 2005 to October 2008 in the two areas where the Iberian lynx survives: Sierra Morena and Donana (Andalusia, southern Spain). A total of 56.1% samples were parasitized with at least 6 species of helminths, including two cestodes (Hymenolepis spp. and Taenia spp.) and four Nematodes (Ancylostoma spp., Toxocara spp., Toxascaris leonina, and Capillaria sp.). In this work, the presence of Hymenolepis is r…

Interface Solid-State Reactions in La0.8Sr0.2MnO3/Ce0.8Sm0.2O2 and La0.8Sr0.2MnO3/BaCe0.9Y0.1O3 Disclosed by X-ray Microspectroscopy

2019

The stability of the electrode/electrolyte interface is a critical issue in solid-oxide cells working at high temperatures, affecting their durability. In this paper, we investigate the solid-state chemical mechanisms that occur at the interface between two electrolytes (Ce0.8Sm0.2O2, SDC, and BaCe0.9Y0.1O3, BCY) and a cathode material (La0.8Sr0.2MnO3, LSM) after prolonged thermal treatments. Following our previous work on the subject, we used X-ray microspectroscopy, a technique that probes the interface with submicrometric resolution combining microanalytical information with the chemical and structural information coming from space-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy. In LSM/BCY, the …
