Cancer in the older person.

2005

Cancer in the older person is an increasingly common problem, due to the progressive prolongation of the life-expectancy of the Western population. This article reviews the mechanisms associating aging and cancer, age-related changes in cancer biology, assessment of the older person to estimate life-expectancy, treatment tolerance, and medical and social conditions that may interfere with cancer treatment, effectiveness of cancer prevention and cancer treatment in older individuals. A comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) is commonly used to predict life-expectancy and functional reserve and to unearth conditions that may jeopardize cancer prevention and treatment. In the interest of cos…

An EORTC Phase II study of caspofungin as first-line therapy of invasive aspergillosis in haematological patients.

2009

OBJECTIVES: Caspofungin was evaluated as first-line monotherapy of invasive aspergillosis (IA) in patients with haematological malignancies and undergoing autologous transplants. METHODS: Adults with proven or probable IA, defined strictly according to EORTC-MSG criteria, were eligible. Those with possible IA were enrolled, but were not evaluable for efficacy unless upgraded to proven/probable disease within 7 days of registration based on investigations performed within 48 h after enrolment. Caspofungin dosage was 70 mg (day 1) followed by 50 mg/day. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients with complete or partial response at the end of caspofungin therapy in the modified inten…

Some classes of finite groups and mutually permutable products

2008

[EN] This paper is devoted to the study of mutually permutable products of finite groups. A factorised group G=AB is said to be a mutually permutable product of its factors A and B when each factor permutes with every subgroup of the other factor. We prove that mutually permutable products of Y-groups (groups satisfying a converse of Lagrange's theorem) and SC-groups (groups whose chief factors are simple) are SC-groups, by means of a local version. Next we show that the product of pairwise mutually permutable Y-groups is supersoluble. Finally, we give a local version of the result stating that when a mutually permutable product of two groups is a PST-group (that is, a group in which every …
