Archaeological Map of Lilybaeum (Marsala) - First Results
2018
The ‘Archaeological Map of Lilybaeum’
2021
The ‘Archaeological Map of Lilybaeum’ is the result of the long-standing scientific cooperation in Marsala between Palermo and Hamburg Universities. This paper investigates the various methods of field research used to gather the necessary data for the archaeological map of ancient Lilybaeum. There will be a particular focus on the topographic survey and photogrammetric aerial survey by Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) conducted in the years 2017–2019. The aim of the work is to highlight the impact of the results on already existing research hypotheses and the ways in which the resulting map enhances our knowledge of the ancient city of Lilybaeum.
Fitness profile of young female volleyball players
2020
BACKGROUND: Factors that influence performance in volleyball, in terms of motor skills, refer to muscle power, speed and agility. This study aimed to examine the abilities and physical characteristics of female volleyball players in terms of age and player specialization. METHODS: A total of 35 subjects (junior and cadet age), participated in this study. Subjects were assessed for body height, mass, spike and block reach, and body composition. Vertical jump, standing broad jump, spike and block jump were tests used to measure leg power. The running speed was evaluated with a 20-m single-sprint effort. The change of direction speed was assessed with a T-test, the sprint 9-3-6-3-9 m forward-b…
The Late Cretaceous Klepa basalts in Macedonia (FYROM) – Constraints on the final stage of Tethys closure in the Balkans
2017
The waning stage(s) of the Tethyan ocean(s) in the Balkans are not well understood. Controversy centres on the origin and life-span of the Cretaceous Sava Zone, which is allegedly a remnant of the last oceanic domain in the Balkan Peninsula, defining the youngest suture between Eurasia- and Adria-derived plates. In order to investigate to what extent late-Cretaceous volcanism within the Sava zone is consistent with this model, we present new age data together with trace-element and Sr–Nd–Pb isotope data for the Klepa basaltic lavas from the central Balkan Peninsula. Our new geochemical data show marked differences between the Cretaceous Klepa basalts (Sava Zone) and the rocks of other volca…
The effect of social information from live demonstrators compared to video playback on blue tit foraging decisions.
2019
Video playback provides a promising method to study social interactions, and the number of video playback experiments has been growing in recent years. Using videos has advantages over live individuals as it increases the repeatability of demonstrations, and enables researchers to manipulate the features of the presented stimulus. How observers respond to video playback might, however, differ among species, and the efficacy of video playback should be validated by investigating if individuals’ responses to videos are comparable to their responses to live demonstrators. Here, we use a novel foraging task to compare blue tits’ (Cyanistes caeruleus) responses to social information from a live …
Cercospora leaf spot of sugar beet (Cercospora beticola Sacc.) Part I. Biology and occurrence
2019
Całość zagadnienia omówiono w oparciu o polską i światową szeroką bazę literaturową.
Heteroditopic chemosensor to detect γ-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) in soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.
2021
Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault (DFSA) is a problem of considerable dimensions on a global scale. Among the different compounds used in DFSA assaults, 4-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) is one of the most elusive due to its physical and biological characteristics. Therefore, the development of real-time detection methods to detect GHB not only in drinks but also in urine is very important for personal and social security. Here, we report two new heteroditopic chemosensors capable of recognizing and detecting GHB in soft drinks, alcoholic beverages and synthetic urine. The compounds have two moieties: a trifluoroacetyl group and a thiourea, which are able to interact respectively with the hydroxyl …
Recognition of familiarity on the basis of howls: a playback experiment in a captive group of wolves
2015
Playback experiments were conducted with a pack of captive Iberian wolves. We used a habituation–discrimination paradigm to test wolves’ ability to discriminate howls based on: (1) artificial manipulation of acoustic parameters of howls and (2) the identity of howling individuals. Manipulations in fundamental frequency and frequency modulation within the natural range of intra-individual howl variation did not elicit dishabituation, while manipulation of modulation pattern did produce dishabituation. With respect to identity, across trials wolves habituated to unfamiliar howls by a familiar wolf (i.e., no direct contact, but previous exposure to howls by this wolf), but not to unfamiliar ho…
Identifying individuality and variability in team tactics by means of statistical shape analysis and multilayer perceptrons.
2012
Abstract Offensive and defensive systems of play represent important aspects of team sports. They include the players’ positions at certain situations during a match, i.e., when players have to be on specific positions on the court. Patterns of play emerge based on the formations of the players on the court. Recognition of these patterns is important to react adequately and to adjust own strategies to the opponent. Furthermore, the ability to apply variable patterns of play seems to be promising since they make it harder for the opponent to adjust. The purpose of this study is to identify different team tactical patterns in volleyball and to analyze differences in variability. Overall 120 s…
Intrinsic electrical conductivity of nanostructured metal-organic polymer chains
2012
One-dimensional conductive polymers are attractive materials because of their potential in flexible and transparent electronics. Despite years of research, on the macro- and nano-scale, structural disorder represents the major hurdle in achieving high conductivities. Here we report measurements of highly ordered metal-organic nanoribbons, whose intrinsic (defect-free) conductivity is found to be 104 S m−1, three orders of magnitude higher than that of our macroscopic crystals. This magnitude is preserved for distances as large as 300 nm. Above this length, the presence of structural defects (~ 0.5%) gives rise to an inter-fibre-mediated charge transport similar to that of macroscopic crysta…
