Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare autosomic-dominant disorder characterized by a deficiency of C1 esterase inhibitor which causes episodic swellings of subcutaneous tissues, bowel walls and upper airways that are disabling and potentially life-threatening. We evaluated n = 17 patients with confirmed HAE diagnosis during attack and remission state and n = 19 healthy subjects. The population structure and recruitment of Argulus coregoni was monitored at a Finnish fish farm during the open water periods of 1999 and 2001 by weekly sampling of attached argulids. In 2001 the numbers of rainbow trout examined increased in the autumn when the A. coregoni population was declining. When the water temperature exceeded 10 degrees C, at the end of May, A. coregoni egg hatching commenced. A mean number of 98 (S.D. +/- 5.4) juvenile A. coregoni was recorded on each fish, before the start of female egg laying in July 1999. The abundance of lice was lower in 2001. Atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) is a cardiac hormone with various functions in body homeostasis. It is also processed in the brain and in the peripheral nervous system where it appears to play a role as a neuromodulator. Little is known about the presence of ANF throughout the spinal cord of the guinea-pig. We therefore examined the distribution of ANF and its possible interrelation with primary sensory afferents in this species. Kinin B1-receptors are induced by various inflammatory stimuli. Since myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion results in inflammation, we questioned whether it could induce B1-receptor-dependent responses to des-Arg9-bradykinin (DBK). Thirty-six rabbits were submitted either to a 30 min coronary occlusion followed by a 3 h reperfusion or to a sham operation. The response to DBK was then tested in vivo on mean arterial pressure (MAP) and in vitro on isolated hearts and arterial rings. PURPOSE. To determine the functional role of M 3 and M 5 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor subtypes in ophthalmic arteries using gene-targeted mice. METHODS. Muscarinic receptor gene expression was quantified in murine ophthalmic arteries using real-time PCR. To test the functional relevance of M 3 and M 5 receptors, ophthalmic arteries from mice deficient in either subtype (M3R -/- , M5R -/- , respectively) and wild-type controls were isolated, cannulated with micropipettes, and pressurized.
