Pro gradu-työni aiheena on nepalilaisen hinduperheen uskonnollinen arki. Tarkastelen perheen uskonnollista arkea vasten kaupungistumisen ja keskiluokkaistumisen taustaa, sosiaalisia prosesseja, joissa tutkimani perhe on osallisena. In recent decades, charitable food assistance has grown into a prevalent way to respond to hunger as a manifestation of severe or absolute poverty that persists even in the affluent European Welfare States. This chapter forms the land case study for Finland. As with all empirical chapters it explores several key themes in relation to food charity in Finland: • the history of food charity in the national context and the relationship between the welfare state and charities; • the nature of and drivers behind contemporary food charity provision; • key changes in social policy and their impact on rising charitable food provision; • and the social justice implications of increasing need for charitable assistance with food. The chapter concludes with critical reflections on the future direction of food charity provision in Finland and the implications of this.

Uusitalo and Takala address the food waste problem as a societal phenomenon and examine ethical virtues, values linked to them and food practices in two different time periods: agrarian society (1885–1917) and mature consumer society (2008–2017), in Finland. They use data from newspapers to uncover how ethical principles can underpin understanding of the food waste phenomenon. The study shows how the virtues adopted by food chain actors guide their practices towards sustainable ways of handling excess food. Unettomuus on yleinen ongelma, johon liittyy muun muassa kohonnut riski sairastua muihin mielenterveyden häiriöihin sekä somaattisiin sairauksiin. Hyväksymis- ja omistautumisterapiaa ei ole vielä juuri tutkittu unettomuuden hoidossa, vaikka se on todettu tehokkaaksi hoidoksi moniin muihin ongelmiin. Myöskään nopeaa hyötymistä ei ole tutkittu aiemmin unettomuuden hoidossa, vaikka kyseinen ilmiö on löydetty muun muassa mieliala- ja ahdistuneisuushäiriöiden hoidossa.
