ACT for sleep - Internet-delivered self-help ACT for sub-clinical and clinical insomnia : A randomized controlled trial
2019
Background: Sleep disturbances are a common health problem. New and more accessible alternatives are needed to improve the availability of psychological treatments for insomnia. - Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of a self-help Acceptance and Commitment Therapy-based web-intervention for sleep disturbances. - Method: Participants (N = 86) reporting symptoms of insomnia were randomly assigned to an Internet-delivered ACT (iACT, n = 43) or a control condition (WLC, n = 40) and assessed with standardized self-report measures related to sleep (ISI, BNSQ, ESS, DBAS), psychological symptoms (BDI-II, SCL-90), life satisfaction, and ACT-related processes (AAQ-2…
A psychological flexibility -based intervention for burnout : A randomized controlled trial
2020
A novel eight-week program based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) principles was created to alleviate burnout-related ill-being and to enhance well-being. This randomized controlled trial investigated the effectiveness of the program and explored whether changes in psychological flexibility mediated the results of the intervention. The program consisted of structured weekly face-to-face group meetings and daily practices provided via a website. Employees from varying professional backgrounds with burnout (mean age = 47 years, 79% female), who all received usual treatment, 1 were randomized into control (TAU, n = 80, receiving no other support) and ACT + TAU intervention (n = 88, r…
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Health Behavior Change: A Contextually-Driven Approach.
2018
Promoting health behavior change presents an important challenge to theory and research in the field of health psychology. In this paper, we introduce a context-driven approach, the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) model which is built on Relational Frame Theory. The ACT-based intervention aims to promote individuals’ new health behavior patterns through the improvement of the key construct of psychological flexibility, which is defined as the ability to contact the present moment more fully with acceptance and mindfulness as a conscious human being. Building on the psychological flexibility model, implemented through the six core ACT processes, individuals improve maintenance of lon…
Charitable food aid in Finland: from a social issue to an environmental solution
2019
Since the establishment of the first food bank in 1995, charitable food aid (CFA) has become entrenched in Finland as a seemingly irreplaceable solution to food poverty. Further, it has recently been suggested that the focus of food aid activities is shifting from food poverty and temporary hunger alleviation towards environmental sustainability through addressing food waste via organized re-distribution of expiring food from retail to charitable organizations. This potentially creates a mechanism that (1) solidifies food poverty and (2) fortifies the paradoxical situation where charitable organizations delivering food aid are dependent on food waste rather than trying to reduce it. To unde…
Vitamin D and Parkinson's Disease.
2022
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble secosteroid, traditionally considered a key regulator of bone metabolism, calcium and phosphorous homeostasis. Its action is made possible through the binding to the vitamin D receptor (VDR), after which it directly and indirectly modulates the expression of thousands of genes. Vitamin D is important for brain development, mature brain activity and associated with many neurological diseases, including Parkinson’s disease (PD). High frequency of vitamin D deficiency in patients with Parkinson’s disease compared to control population was noted nearly twenty years ago. This finding is of interest given vitamin D’s neuroprotective effect, exerted by the action of neur…
Impact of Urinary Incontinence on Physical Function and Respiratory Muscle Strength in Incontinent Women : A Comparative Study between Urinary Incont…
2022
Patients with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) may be afraid to increase intra-abdominal pressure to avoid incontinence. This could lead to weak expiratory muscles. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between respiratory muscle strength, physical function, and SUI in patients with SUI. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Physical Medicine and Functional Rehabilitation Department. Thirty-one incontinent women (IG) and twenty-nine women in a control group (CG) were enrolled in this study. Anthropometric data, respiratory muscle strength (maximal inspiratory pressure; maximal expiratory pressure), SUI (Urogenital Distress Inventory-6; Incontinence Impact Question…
Extracting locations from sport and exercise-related social media messages using a neural network-based bilingual toponym recognition model
2022
Funding: This study is a part of the “Equality in suburban physical activity environments, YLLI” research project (in Finnish: Yhdenvertainen liikunnallinen lähiö, YLLI). The project is being financed by the research program about suburban in Finland “Lähiöohjelma 2020-2022” coordinated by the Ministry of Environment (grant recipient: Dr. Petteri Muukkonen). Sport and exercise contribute to health and well-being in cities. While previous research has mainly focused on activities at specific locations such as sport facilities, “informal sport” that occur at arbitrary locations across the city have been largely neglected. Such activities are more challenging to observe, but this challenge may…
Jyväskyläläisten ravintoloiden anniskeluoikeudet ja valvonta 1932-1939
2015
Epäonnistuneen kieltolain myötä Suomeen laadittiin itsenäisyyden ajan ensimmäinen väkijuomalaki. Väkijuomalain myötä yksityiset henkilöt, yhdistykset, järjestöt sekä yksityiset kerhot saattoivat perustaa anniskeluravintoloita. Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan Jyväskyläläisiä anniskeluravintoloiden anniskeluoikeusprosessia ja ravintoloiden valvontaa kieltolain päättymisestä vuonna 1932 talvisodan syttymiseen syystalvella vuonna 1939. Yhteiskunta oli sisällissodan myötä edelleen jakaantunut. Myös Alkoholiliike jakoi ravintolat yhteiskuntaluokkien mukaan. Tutkielman ensimmäisenä tavoitteena on selvittää, miten anniskeluoikeutta haettiin ja millaiset jyväskyläläiset ravintolat oikeutta hakivat …

"Keskiluokkaistuva kansakoulunopettajisto" : Jyväskylän opettajaseminaarin opiskelijoiden kulttuurisosiaaliset taustat seminaariyhteisössä vuosina 19…
2016
Sosiaalisella taustalla tarkoitetaan tutkimuksessa opiskelijan perhetaustaan pohjautuvaa yhteiskunnallista sosiaalista statusta. Tutkimuksessa sukupuolella on tärkeä osa tarkastelunäkökulmassa, sillä seminaari oli jaettu nais- ja miesosastoon koko seminaarin toiminnan aja…
