Assessment of the cortical bone thickness using ultrasonic guided waves: Modelling and in vitro study

2007

Determination of cortical bone thickness is warranted, e.g., for assessing the level of endosteal resorption in osteoporosis or other bone pathologies. We have shown previously that the velocity of the fundamental antisymmetric (or flexural) guided wave, measured for bone phantoms and bones in vitro, correlates with the cortical thickness significantly better than those by other axial ultrasound methods. In addition, we have introduced an inversion scheme based on guided wave theory, group velocity filtering and 2-D fast Fourier transform, for determination of cortical thickness from the measured velocity of guided waves. In this study, the method was validated for tubular structures by usi…

Thickness sensitivity of ultrasound velocity in long bone phantoms

2004

One approach to bone disease diagnosis such as osteoporosis is to measure the velocity of ultrasound propagating axially along long bones. In this study, the variation in velocity as a function of radial position was assessed using two polyvinyl chloride (PVC) bone phantoms with cross-sectional geometry similar to the human tibia but differing in medullary cavity diameter. Two ultrasonometers were used: these were a commercial device operating at a relatively high frequency (HF) of 1.25 MHz and a prototype low frequency (LF) device operating at approximately 200 kHz. The LF measurements showed a larger variation with radial position, with changes in velocity of up to 20% occurring around th…

Harvesting rainfall energy by means of piezoelectric transducer

2013

In this paper a detailed study on the piezoelectric energy harvesting of rainfall is presented. Different features have been taken into account in order to define the limits in this energy harvesting. Only commercial transducers have been considered: a lead zirconate titanate and polyvinylidene difluoride transducer.

Elastic wave propagation in bone in vivo: methodology.

1995

The purpose of this study was to investigate the usefulness of elastic wave propagation (EWP) in estimating the mechanical properties (elasticity) of human tibia. The test group was composed of 78-yr-old women assigned to high (n = 19) and low (n = 17) bone mineral density (BMD) groups as measured at the calcaneus by the 125I-photon absorption method. The EWP apparatus consisted of an impact-producing hammer with a force strain gauge and two accelerometers positioned on the bone. Results for nylon and acrylic were used to calibrate the apparatus. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) solid rods and tubes of various diameters were used to evaluate the relationship between the elastic wave velocity and cr…

Development and evaluation of occlusive systems employing polyvinyl alcohol for transdermal delivery of sumatriptan succinate

2010

The aim of the present study was to develop a sumatriptan succinate transdermal system for applying migraine treatments efficiently and easily. For this system polyvinyl alcohol was employed as a matrix and Azone((R)) was added as a permeability enhancer. The physical characteristics, mechanical properties, and in vivo bioadhesion of the systems were evaluated, as was in vitro permeation across porcine skin. A uniform distribution of the drug in the matrix was observed, and moisture uptake values were constant. With regard to mechanical parameters, occlusive layer inclusion made the system more resistant, and no significant differences were detected with respect to other systems. Although A…

Ion-Selective Organic Electrochemical Transistors

2014

Ion-selective organic electrochemical transistors with sensitivity to potassium approaching 50 μA dec(-1) are demonstrated. The remarkable sensitivity arises from the use of high transconductance devices, where the conducting polymer is in direct contact with a reference gel electrolyte and integrated with an ion-selective membrane.

Spray-Drying, Solvent-Casting and Freeze-Drying Techniques: a Comparative Study on their Suitability for the Enhancement of Drug Dissolution Rates.

2019

Purpose Solid dispersions (SDs) represent the most common formulation technique used to increase the dissolution rate of a drug. In this work, the three most common methods used to prepare SDs, namely spray-drying, solvent-casting and freezedrying, have been compared in order to investigate their effect on increasing drug dissolution rate. Methods Three formulation strategies were used to prepare a polymer mixture of polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA) and maltodextrin (MDX) as SDs loaded with the following three model drugs, all of which possess a poor solubility: Olanzapine, Dexamethasone, and Triamcinolone acetonide. The SDs obtained were analysed and compared in terms of drug particle size, drug-lo…

Incorporation of nisin in poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) films by melt processing: a study on the antimicrobial properties

2011

Both industry and academia have shown a growing interest in materials with antimicrobial properties suitable for food packaging applications. In this study, we prepared and characterized thin films of ethylene-co-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer with antimicrobial properties. The films were prepared with a film blowing process by incorporating a nisin preparation as an antimicrobial agent in the melt. Two grades of EVA containing 14 and 28% (wt/wt) vinyl acetate (EVA 14 and EVA 28, respectively) and two commercial formulations of nisin with different nominal activities were used. The effect of the nisin concentration also was evaluated. The films with the highest antimicrobial activity were th…

Solution-processible electrode materials for a heat-sensitive piezoelectric thin-film sensor

2012

Abstract Piezoelectric sensors are needed in a wide range of applications from physiological measurement applications to industrial monitoring systems. Custom-designed, highly integratable and cost-effective sensor elements can be manufactured by using flexible materials in combination with high-throughput printing for fabrication. This would also enable the embedding of ubiquitous sensors in our living environment to improve the common welfare. Here, we have fabricated flexible piezoelectric sensor elements using printing methods. We demonstrated that alternative, printable electrode materials are compatible with temperature-sensitive functional substrates. Low-temperature curable electrod…

Calcium phosphate/polyvinyl acetate coatings on SS304 via galvanic co-deposition for orthopedic implant applications

2021

Abstract In this work, the galvanic deposition method is used to deposit coatings of brushite/hydroxyapatite/polyvinyl acetate on 304 stainless steel. Coatings are obtained at different temperatures and with different sacrificial anodes, consisting of a mixture of brushite and hydroxyapatite. Samples are aged in a simulated body fluid (SBF), where a complete conversion of brushite into hydroxyapatite with a simultaneous change in morphology and wettability occurred. The corrosion tests show that, compared with bare 304, the coating shifts Ecorr to anodic values and reduces icorr Ecorr, and icorr has different values at different aging times due to chemical interactions at the solid/liquid i…
