Virtual Reality for Collaborative Learning in Teacher Education

This poster discusses the potential of virtual reality (VR) for collaborative learning. VR can provide engaging, social and creative digital environments for collaborative knowledge construction but its pedagogically meaningful uses and affordances are only just developing. This article describes a project called “The art based methods in developing transversal competence” funded by The Finnish National Board of Education. The article is based on the hermeneutic phenomenological approach in action research. The project developed learning environments as well as project-based learning with emphasis on the art-based methods and transversal competence approach to learning. This study presents new ways of visualising technology-enhanced collaborative inquiry-based learning (CIBL) processes in an undergraduate physics course. The data included screen-capture videos from a technology-enhanced learning environment and audio recordings of discussions between students. We performed a thematic analysis based on the phases of inquiry-based learning (IBL). The thematic analysis was complemented by a content analysis, in which we analysed whether the utilisation of technological tools was on a deep-level, surface-level, or nonexistent basis. The aim of this study was to examine what kinds of pedagogical practices predict perceived learning of university students’ social skills in classes where these skills are not set as learning outcomes. Data were collected from students of various disciplines by means of a questionnaire and then analysed using regression analysis. Sähköinen oppimateriaali on käsitteenä laaja. Sillä on useita läheisiä käsitteitä ja synonyymejä, joilla voidaan kontekstista riippuen tarkoittaa eri asioita. Koulutuksen digitalisoituminen on ajankohtaista kaikilla koulutusasteilla, mutta sähköisten oppimateriaalien käytön mahdollisuuksia ja haasteita korkeakouluissa tutkiva kirjallisuus on hajanaista erityisesti suomenkielellä.
