Weed diversity mitigates crop yield losses: a perspective from European grain-based systems and insights for biodiversity-based weed management

2020

International audience; Reconciling crop productivity and biodiversity maintenance is one of the main challenges of agriculture worldwide. Weed management is recognized to be a key point for ecological intensification in agriculture because weeds can generate severe yield losses but also represent the base of agricultural trophic networks. Therefore, research in weed science has often opposed two different schools of thought. The drastic decline of biodiversity in agricultural landscapes has either been considered as a sign of efficient weed management or an erosion of the natural capital on which sustainable crop production is founded.Weed: crop competition has historically been studied in…

2013

Field Pea: development of genetic research for the selection of parameters to take into account to improve yield stability. Legumes were essential in rotations in the past, but they fell off during the 20th century. Maybe they will come back into favour in the 21st century thanks to its economy, agri-environment and food assets. Field Pea is the main crop of this family in France, but it remains underdeveloped because its unstable yield does not enable the farmers to ensure their income security. Therefore researchers should focus on yield stability. Modelling Pea remains difficult because of its indeterminate development. Parameters to take into account are many and their significance must…

Agronomy and climatology of a 100 000 km² watershed in West Africa.

2011

7 pages; International audience; Sahelian regions are considered as particularly vulnerable to climatic variability and change for two reasons: the dominant role of rainfed agriculture in their economies and their weakness of water resources management. The physiological response of an individual plant to the climatic variations of parameters is well documented, but extrapolation to regional food production still remains very dubious. On the Bani, a tributary of the Niger River in Mali, climatic variables representative of the agroclimatic constraints of the cultures (dynamics of the rainy season and occurrence of extreme events) were evaluated from observed past data and simulated future d…

Contamination of rapeseed harvest by volunteers of other varieties : a study of intergenotypic competition

2004

Rapeseed volunteers in rapeseed crops can cause contamination in harvest through pollen and seeds. The aim of the study was to predict pollen and seed production by volunteers in winter rapeseed crops according to the genotypes of the crop and the volunteers. Firstly an experimental analysis of intraspecific competition was carried out in 2000 and 2001 on two and six genotypes, respectively. The main competition period begins with vegetation onset and affects pollen and seed production of the volunteers. Relations between density, height, yield and number of flowers were developed based on results from experiments and literature. Knowing the densities and heights of volunteers and crop on t…

2010

The archipelago of Cape Verde comprises 10 volcanic islands and belongs to the Sahelian zone stretching from the Atlantic to the Red Sea. Since several decades, Cape Verde is affected by desertification caused largely by climatic recession and soil erosion. These factors, coupled with high population pressure on resources, rugged topography and torrential tropical rains, cause serious losses of lands. However, since its independence in 1975, the Government conducted an extensive program of afforestation, soil and water conservation. Nevertheless very little research has been conducted to evaluate the actions of protection and conservation of soil and water. Therefore, there is no data on th…

Trophic relationships between the cultivated plant and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Importance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on plant production (…

2018

Highlighting the role of diversity in driving weed dynamics and weed-crop interactions

2017

EAGESTAD INRA; Weeds are responsible for crop losses and their management, mainly through herbicide applications, has led to resistances and environmental impacts. Integrated Weed Management encourages the use of “many little hammers” such as crop rotation, mechanical weeding, stale seedbed technique and delayed sowing … i.e. more complex and diversified cropping systems, in order to increase cropping system sustainability. However, research is still required to test the effectiveness of combinations of these alternative tactics in a wide range of agricultural contexts. Furthermore, the cropping system approach considers all these individual hammers, whose effects on agricultural weeds have…
