Agronomy and climatology of a 100 000 km² watershed in West Africa.

2011

7 pages; International audience; Sahelian regions are considered as particularly vulnerable to climatic variability and change for two reasons: the dominant role of rainfed agriculture in their economies and their weakness of water resources management. The physiological response of an individual plant to the climatic variations of parameters is well documented, but extrapolation to regional food production still remains very dubious. On the Bani, a tributary of the Niger River in Mali, climatic variables representative of the agroclimatic constraints of the cultures (dynamics of the rainy season and occurrence of extreme events) were evaluated from observed past data and simulated future d…

On the fermentative behavior of auxotrophic strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

2014

Background: The selection of new yeast strains could lead to improvements in bioethanol production. Here, we have studied the fermentative capacity of different auxotrophic mutants of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which are routinely used as hosts for the production of heterologous proteins. It has recently been found that these strains exhibit physiological alterations and peculiar sensitivities with respect to the parental prototrophic strains from which they derive. In this work the performance of auxotrophic S. cerevisiae CEN.PK strains was compared to the corresponding prototrophic strain, to S. cerevisiae T5bV, a strain isolated from grape must and to another auxotrophic strain, S. cerevi…

Crop rotation, nitrogen fertilization and genotype effects on durum wheat productive characteristics

2004

A field trial was performed in 2000/01 and 2001/02 in the experimental farm “Sparacia” (Cammarata – AG – Sicily) in order to evaluate the qualitative and quantitative response of four varieties of durum wheat when grown after a legume crop (field pea) or in rotation with itself and when submitted to different N-fertilization levels: no fertilization (N0, control), 60 kg ha-1 (N 60, rate advised by the EC n. 2078/92 for the Sicilian territory) and 120 kg ha-1 (N 120, fertilization rate commonly used under the “traditional” cropping technique). In the first trial year, the fertilized trial expressed a better yield performance than the control, but in 2001/02, characterized by severe and prolo…

Efficient Conversion of Light to Chemical Energy : Directional, Chiral Photoswitches with Very High Quantum Yields

2020

Abstract Photochromic systems have been used to achieve a number of engineering functions such as light energy conversion, molecular motors, pumps, actuators, and sensors. Key to practical applications is a high efficiency in the conversion of light to chemical energy, a rigid structure for the transmission of force to the environment, and directed motion during isomerization. We present a novel type of photochromic system (diindane diazocines) that converts visible light with an efficiency of 18 % to chemical energy. Quantum yields are exceptionally high with >70 % for the cis–trans isomerization and 90 % for the back‐reaction and thus higher than the biochemical system rhodopsin (64 %). T…

Sunlit surface waters : exploring the photochemical reactivity of dissolved organic carbon

2017

In surface waters, solar radiation can photochemically mineralise the dissolved organic carbon (DOC, a measure of dissolved organic matter, DOM) to dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). This DIC photoproduction constitutes an essential yet vague flux in the aquatic carbon cycling. The present thesis is based on the empirical assessment of the DOC photochemical reactivity, which was determined as the spectral apparent quantum yields (AQY) for DIC photoproduction. First, AQYs were determined in DOM solutions to quantify the impact of pH and DOM-associated iron. Then boreal lake waters were used for assessing the alteration of DOC photoreactivity due to water quality and catchment property. By sim…

"Table 2" of "Search for Higgs boson decays into a $Z$ boson and a light hadronically decaying resonance using 13 TeV $pp$ collision data from the AT…

2020

Efficiencies of the MLP selection, complete selection and total expected signal yields for each signal sample, assuming B$(H\to Z(Q/a))=100\%$ and $\sigma(pp\to H) = \sigma_\text{SM}(pp\to H)$. Pythia 8 branching fractions of $a$ are assumed using a $\tan\beta$ value of 1. The MLP efficiencies, total efficiencies, and expected yields are determined using MC samples, with uncertainties due to MC sample statistics, except for the expected background yield. The expected background yield and its uncertainty is calculated as described in the main text of the paper.

Independent isotopic yields in 25 MeV and 50 MeV proton-induced fission of natU

2016

Independent isotopic yields for elements from Zn to La in the 25 MeV proton-induced fission of natUnatU were determined with the JYFLTRAP facility. In addition, isotopic yields for Zn, Ga, Rb, Sr, Zr, Pd and Xe in the 50 MeV proton-induced fission of natUnatU were measured. The deduced isotopic yield distributions are compared with a Rubchenya model, the GEF model with universal parameters and the semi-empirical Wahl model. Of these, the Rubchenya model gives the best overall agreement with the obtained data. Combining the isotopic yield data with mass yield data to obtain the absolute independent yields was attempted. The result depends on the mass yield distribution. peerReviewed
