Policy Brief: Dialogue, Argumentation, and Creative Practices as Tools in Cultural Literacy Learning in Europe
2021
One of the greatest challenges in today’s European societies is the polarization of societal groups and opinions. Attempts to tackle this challenge need to start from children and young people. Cultural literacy learning is a key to advance tolerant, empathetic, and inclusive attitudes towards diversity and differences. It is important that the EU strengthens its current education initiatives and policies and creates new ones emphasizing cultural literacy learning based on dialogue and argumentation as core skills for participating in a pluralistic society. These initiatives and policies should recognize creative practices as an effective arena for teaching empathy. The EU’s education polic…
Hyvä, paha lähiö : nuoret ja asuinalueella syntyvä sosiaalinen pääoma
2018
Depression and Violence in Adolescence and Young Adults: Findings From Three Longitudinal Cohorts
2017
Objective Despite recent research demonstrating associations between violence and depression in adults, links in adolescents are uncertain. This study aims to assess the longitudinal associations between young people’s depression and later violent outcomes. Method We used data from three cohorts with different measurements of depression exposures and subsequent violent outcomes. In a Dutch community cohort Research on Adolescent Development And Relationships (RADAR; N = 623) and a population-based British birth cohort Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC; N = 4,030), we examined the longitudinal links between adolescent depressive symptoms and violent behaviors from age 1…
Post-encoding stress does not enhance memory consolidation: The role of cortisol and testosterone reactivity
2020
In contrast to the large body of research on the effects of stress-induced cortisol on memory consolidation in young people, far less attention has been devoted to understanding the effects of stress-induced testosterone on this memory phase. This study examined the psychobiological (i.e., anxiety, cortisol, and testosterone) response to the Maastricht Acute Stress Test and its impact on free recall and recognition for emotional and neutral material. Thirty-seven healthy young men and women were exposed to a stress (MAST) or control task post-encoding, and 24 h later, they had to recall the material previously learned. Results indicated that the MAST increased anxiety and cortisol levels, b…

Bakalaura darba “Mediju lietojuma paradumi un motivācija pusaudžu auditorijā Rīgas vidusskolās” pētījuma mērķis ir noskaidrot un atspoguļot jauniešu, vecumā no 16 līdz 19 gadiem, mediju lietojumu, motivācijas iezīmes, salīdzinot jauno un tradicionālo mediju attīstību no respondentu patēriņu paradumu aspekta. Socio-Demographic Vulnerability of Youth
2008
For a kind of inertia effect, the Italian welfare state protects today the old age too intensely while little the new risks associated with other phases of life course. Young Italians seem to suffer the actual changes: “youth remain longer in parental home and postpone the creation of its own independent life to most advanced age”. To understand the vulnerability situation increasingly widespreading among young people, it seems more and more necessary the depth analysis of the reasons and the subjective status of this discomfort that occur through a delay in transition to adulthood. In particular we study the self-perceived vulnerability situation of young Italians in the labor market (both…
Nuorten lukemisvaikeudet ja lukemiseen yhteydessä olevat tekijät kielessämme
2017
Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin suomenkielisten nuorten lukutaitoa ja sen taustalla olevia kognitiivisia tekijöitä. Artikkeli on ilmestynyt lehdessä Scientific Studies of Reading otsikolla ”The nature of and factors related to reading difficulties among adolescents in a transparent orthography”.
Real-Time Processes of Career Goal Construction : A Study Case Approach with Implications for the Development of Adolescents’ Identity
2022
The study aimed at investigating how different young people going through the post-high school transition set, monitor, pursue, and renegotiate career goals in real-time and in everyday life circumstances. A theoretically driven proposition supported the conceptualization of career goals as complex dynamic systems and guided the examination and description of the moment-to-moment processes shaping the (re)construction of career goals. The study adopted an exploratory research approach and was based on a longitudinal case study design. Diary reports were collected for 39 weeks. Participants were four young people (three females, one male) who at the onset of the study were 18 years of age an…
