Causal analysis of short-term cardiovascular variability: state-dependent contribution of feedback and feedforward mechanisms.

2016

Baroreflex function is usually assessed from spontaneous oscillations of blood pressure (BP) and cardiac RR interval assuming a unidirectional influence from BP to RR. However, the interaction of BP and RR is bidirectional—RR also influences BP. Novel methods based on the concept of Granger causality were recently developed for separate analysis of feedback (baroreflex) and feedforward (mechanical) interactions between RR and BP. We aimed at assessing the proportion of the two causal directions of the interactions between RR and systolic BP (SBP) oscillations during various conditions, and at comparing causality measures from SBP to RR with baroreflex gain indexes. Arterial BP and ECG sig…

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance-derived aortic compliance, distensibility and pulse wave velocity at rest and during a supine bicycle exercise in y…

2014

Background Purpose: Risk of aortic rupture is evaluated based on the vessel diameter; this parameter is probably insufficient. In vivo evaluation of biomechanical property of the aortic tissue might be of interest to discriminate between normal and altered aortic tissue (A Lalande et al, JMRI 2008). The purpose of this study was to describe a technique to measure regional aortic compliance (AC), aortic distensibility (AD) and aortic stiffness with 1.5 T MRI in young individuals under resting conditions and during supine bicycle exercise.

Clinical evaluation of the European LeukaemiaNet criteria for clinicohaematological response and resistance/intolerance to hydroxycarbamide in essent…

2010

Standardized criteria of response to treatment and a unified definition of resistance/intolerance to hydroxycarbamide (HC) in essential thrombocythaemia (ET) have been proposed by the European LeukaemiaNet (ELN). We have retrospectively evaluated such criteria in 166 ET patients treated with HC for a median of 4·5 years. Overall, 134 patients achieved a complete clinicohaematological response (CR) and 25 a partial response. Thirty-three patients met at least one of the ELN criteria defining resistance (n = 15) or intolerance (n = 21) to HC. Fifteen cases developed anaemia with thrombocytosis, which was associated with a high incidence of myelofibrosis and death from any cause. Other definit…

Toothguide Training Box for Dental Color Choice Training

2011

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of the Toothguide Training Box (TTB) for training dental students in color identification. The seventy-four volunteers who took part in the study attended a seminar on the Vita 3D Master Guide (MG) and the TTB system as well as a demonstration of the equipment before training began. At the end of the training they took the TTB final test. In addition, the participants were asked to recognize ten MG shade tabs in a blind manner before and after TTB training. The training times and percentages of correct answers were compared using the paired t-test. Variations in scores with training times and percentages of correct answers before and after t…

Is GH dosing optimal in female patients with adult-onset GH deficiency? An analysis from the NordiNet® International Outcome Study

2017

SummaryObjective To evaluate gender differences in GH dosing, IGF-I and cardiovascular risk markers in adults with GH deficiency (GHD). Design NordiNet® International Outcome Study (NCT00960128), a noninterventional, multicentre study, evaluates the long-term effectiveness and safety of Norditropin® (Novo Nordisk A/S) in the real-life clinical setting. Patients Nondiabetic patients (n = 252; 41·7% female) with adult-onset GHD (age ≥20 years at GH start), ≥4 years’ GH therapy and glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) data at baseline and 4 years. Measurements Effects of gender (adjusted for baseline age and body mass index [BMI], average GH dose, treatment duration and concomitant medication) on …

Esthesioneuroblastoma presenting with epifora in a young child

1997

Esthesioneuroblastoma (ENB) is an uncommon tumor believed to arise from the olfactory epithelium. 1 This neoplasm has rarely been reported in children, with only 12 cases reported to date among patients younger than 10 years. 2 The usual initial symptom in children, as in older patients, is nasal obstruction or epistaxis 3 ; consequently, the tumor is often first seen by an otorhinolaryngologist. We report a case of ENB in a young child in whom the initial symptom was epiphora; to our knowledge, this initial symptom is previously unreported, and ENB must now be considered in the differential diagnosis of epiphora in childhood. Report of a Case. A white 6-year-old male child was seen on Janu…

Gender and Age Group Differences in Stereotypes about Mental Health Care Providers

2013

Mental health care providers play a significant role in the prevention of mental health problems and promotion of well-being. The aim of the study was to explore gender and age group differences in stereotypes about helping professionals in the mental health care field. The data were derived from 338 Latvian-speaking adults aged 18 to 87. They rated stereotypic characteristics of five typical helping professionals (a family doctor, a psychologist, a psychiatrist, a clergyman, and an astrologer) on a seven-point Likert-type scale. The stereotype content model was used to measure warmth and competence stereotypes (Fiske, Xu, Cuddy, & Glick, 1999). Gender differences show that women rate a typ…

Management of Lemierre Syndrome.

2022

Lemierre Syndrome is a rare form of septic thrombophlebitis of the head and neck veins, most typically of the internal jugular vein, which affects otherwise healthy adolescents and young adults after an oropharyngitis or other local infection. It is characterized by multiple septic embolization. Despite treatment, Lemierre Syndrome displays a high rate of in-hospital complications that include thrombus progression and a new peripheral septic embolization; moreover, it can be fatal or cause disabling sequelae. The mainstay of the treatment is antibiotic therapy; anticoagulation is often used, but its role is controversial. Surgical treatment is often necessary in case of peripheral septic le…

Reactive Response and Adaptive Modifications in Dynamic Stability to Changes in Lower Limb Dynamics in the Elderly while Walking

2011

The aim of this study was to examine the reactive responses and adaptive modifications in dynamic stability resulting from a unilateral change in lower limb dynamics in older and younger adults while walking. Eleven older (62- 76yrs) and eleven younger (22-30yrs) subjects walked on a treadmill and performed different gait conditions using an external resistance against lower limb movement. The margin of stability (MoS) at touchdown was calculated as the difference between base of support (BoS) and extrapolated centre of mass. After the resistance was turned on unexpectedly, older adults needed more steps to get back to the MoS baseline level due to a lower increase of the BoS. In the follow…
