Shell structure and shape coexistence in195Pb

1995

Pb-195 was investigated utilizing the reactions Dy-164(S-36, 5n)Pb-195 and Dy-164(S-34, 3n)Pb-195 at beam energies of 170 and 160MeV respectively. Two new dipole bands which feed into the yrast 25/2(+) state, were found in Pb-195. The connection between the bands and the spherical states was established and thus spins and energies of the involved collective states were determined. The deformation is understood as mainly due to excitations of protons across the Z = 82 shell gap. The observed backbends are interpreted as alignment of i(13/2) neutrons.

On the Yrast Structure of206Po

1986

Excited states in 206Po with spins up to 16 were identified through reactions with 3He- and α-particles on targets of 206Pb. Level and transition properties were studied using conventional in-beam γ-ray and conversion electron spectroscopy. The half-life of the yrast 9- state, identified as the neutron two-quasiparticle state ν(f5/2-1i13/2-1)9-, was determined as 1.0 μs. No other isomers, besides the previously known isomeric 8+ state, were observed. The excited states are classified within the shell-model description. Transition probabilities are discussed.

Rotational features of vibrator nucleus118Te

1999

High-spin states in ${}^{118}\mathrm{Te}$ have been populated via heavy-ion induced reactions. Excited states were observed up to $I=32\ensuremath{\Elzxh}$ and, in addition to irregular level sequences, several bands were identified for the first time. The decoupled negative parity bands based upon ${7}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${8}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ states are interpreted to arise from the proton ${h}_{11/2}{g}_{7/2}$ configuration coupled to the $2p\ensuremath{-}2h$ intruder states in ${}^{116}\mathrm{Sn}.$ These bands show very smooth alignment behavior, in accordance with the proton ${h}_{11/2}$ bands in neighboring Sb and I nuclei. Above $I=20$ the yrast positive parity band is built on t…

Bose condensates at high angular momenta

2000

We exploit the analogy with the Quantum Hall (QH) system to study weakly interacting bosons in a harmonic trap. For a $\delta$-function interaction potential the ``yrast'' states with $L\ge N(N-1)$ are degenerate, and we show how this can be understood in terms of Haldane exclusion statistics. We present spectra for 4 and 8 particles obtained by numerical and algebraic methods, and demonstrate how a more general hard-core potential lifts the degeneracies on the yrast line. The exact wavefunctions for N=4 are compared with trial states constructed from composite fermions (CF), and the possibility of using CF-states to study the low L region at high N is discussed.

Competition of fission with the population of the yrast superdeformed band in $^{194}$Pb

1999

The 194Pb yrast superdeformed band has been populated in two reactions induced by two different beams delivered by the JYFL cyclotron. These two reactions differ in the asymmetry ratio (i.e. the ratio of the target mass over the projectile one) by more than a factor 3. For the first time, a superdeformed band of the A≈190 mass region has been populated using such a very heavy beam, namely 74Ge.
