Aging of Nanosized ZnO Modified Polyoxymethylene Blends with Ethylene–octene Copolymer

2015

The influence of ethylene–octene copolymer and zinc oxide (ZnO) on structure and tensile stress–strain behavior of polyoxymethylene were investigated before and after ultraviolet weathering. Addition of ZnO considerably improved stress–strain characteristics of the ultraviolet-irradiation impaired composites. Crystallinities of ultraviolet-irradiated composites were affected by numerous competitive processes, including suppression of crystallization in the presence of multiple components in the system, nucleation induced by nanofiller, secondary crystallization and amorphization because of the chain scissions of the macromolecules. Addition of ZnO considerably improved stability of the comp…

Cellulose-inorganic hybrids of strongly reduced thermal conductivity

2022

Abstract The employment of atomic layer deposition and spin coating techniques for preparing inorganic-organic hybrid multilayer structures of alternating ZnO-CNC layers was explored in this study. Helium ion microscopy and X-ray reflectivity showed the superlattice formation for the nanolaminate structures and atomic force microscopy established the efficient control of the CNCs surface coverage on the Al-doped ΖnO by manipulating the concentration of the spin coating solution. Thickness characterization of the hybrid structures was performed via both ellipsometry and X-ray reflectivity and the thermal conductivity was examined by time domain thermoreflectance technique. It appears that ev…

Hydroformylation of 1-Hexene over Rh/Nano-Oxide Catalysts

2013

The effect of nanostructured supports on the activity of Rh catalysts was studied by comparing the catalytic performance of nano- and bulk-oxide supported Rh/ZnO, Rh/SiO₂ and Rh/TiO₂ systems in 1-hexene hydroformylation. The highest activity with 100% total conversion and 96% yield of aldehydes was obtained with the Rh/nano-ZnO catalyst. The Rh/nano-ZnO catalyst was found to be more stable and active than the corresponding rhodium catalyst supported on bulk ZnO. The favorable morphology of Rh/nano-ZnO particles led to an increased metal content and an increased number of weak acid sites compared to the bulk ZnO supported catalysts. Both these factors favored the improved catalytic performan…

Room-temperature plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition of ZnO: Film growth dependence on the PEALD reactor configuration

2017

Room-temperature plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) of ZnO was studied by depositing the films using diethylzinc and O2 plasma from inductively-coupled plasma (ICP) and capacitively-coupled plasma (CCP) plasma source configurations. The CCP-PEALD was operated using both remote and direct plasma. It was observed that the films deposited by means of remote ICP and CCP were all highly oxygen rich, independently on plasma operation parameters, but impurity (H, C) contents could be reduced by increasing plasma pulse time and applied power. With the direct CCP-PEALD the film composition was closer to stoichiometric, and film crystallinity was enhanced. The ZnO film growth was observe…

Anti-bacterial activity of graphene oxide as a new weapon nanomaterial to combat multidrug-resistance bacteria.

2016

Antibiotic resistance in microbial pathogens has become a serious health problem in the world. The increasing spread of hospital acquired infections especially in immunocompromised and cancer patients caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) microbial pathogens is restricting the choices for impressive antibiotic therapy. So many efforts have been made to develop new compounds with antimicrobial activity. In recent years, nanoparticles, particularly graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles have found many applications in various fields, including antibacterial action, pathogens bio detection, cancer therapy, and drug and gene delivery. The use of graphene oxide as an antibacterial agent for the treatme…

High Resolution X-Ray Spectroscopy with Compound Semiconductor Detectors and Digital Pulse Processing Systems

2012

The advent of semiconductor detectors has revolutionized the broad field of X-ray spectroscopy. Semiconductor detectors, originally developed for particle physics, are now widely used for X-ray spectroscopy in a large variety of fields, as X-ray fluorescence analysis, X-ray astronomy and diagnostic medicine. The success of semiconductor detectors is due to several unique properties that are not available with other types of detectors: the excellent energy resolution, the high detection efficiency and the possibility of development of compact detection systems. Among the semiconductors, silicon (Si) detectors are the key detectors in the soft X-ray band (15 keV) and will continue to be the c…

Hard X-Ray Response of Pixellated CdZnTe Detectors

2009

In recent years, the development of cadmium zinc telluride (CdZnTe) detectors for x-ray and gamma ray spectrometry has grown rapidly. The good room temperature performance and the high spatial resolution of pixellated CdZnTe detectors make them very attractive in space-borne x-ray astronomy, mainly as focal plane detectors for the new generation of hard x-ray focusing telescopes. In this work, we investigated on the spectroscopic performance of two pixellated CdZnTe detectors coupled with a custom low noise and low power readout application specific integrated circuit (ASIC). The detectors (10x10x1 and 10x10x2 mm3 single crystals) have an anode layout based on an array of 256 pixels with a …

Influence of iron non-stoichiometry on spinel zinc ferrite gas sensing properties

2012

Abstract It is demonstrated for the first time that the gas sensing properties of a spinel ferrite complex metal oxide semiconductor can be improved by controlling iron stoichiometry. Conductivity and sensitivity was analyzed for ZnFe2+zO4± spinel type ferrite with z from −0.01 to 0.15. By increasing iron content from z = −0.01 to z = 0.1, sensitivity increases up to 3 times but for samples with z > 0.1 sensitivity drops. It was observed from impedance spectroscopy measurements that resistance decreases with an increase of the iron content. Complex impedance spectra reveal two phases with different resistance attributed to depletion layer (Rd) and bulk (Rb). With increasing iron content inc…

A zinc-doped endodontic cement facilitates functional mineralization and stress dissipation at the dentin surface

2018

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate nanohardness and viscoelastic behavior of dentin surfaces treated with two canal sealer cements for dentin remineralization. Material and Methods: Dentin surfaces were subjected to: i) 37% phosphoric acid (PA) or ii) 0.5 M ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) conditioning prior to the application of two experimental hydroxyapatite-based cements, containing sodium hydroxide (calcypatite) or zinc oxide (oxipatite), respectively. Samples were stored in simulated body fluid during 24 h or 21 d. The intertubular and peritubular dentin were evaluated using a nanoindenter to assess nanohardness (Hi). The load/displacement responses were used f…
