Highly Stable Neutral and Positively Charged Dicarbollide Sandwich Complexes

2005

Novel sandwich metallacarboranes commo-[3,3'-Ni(8-SMe2-1,2-C2B9H10)2] (1), commo-[3,3'-Co(8-SMe2-1,2-C2B9H10)2]+ (2+), commo-[3,3'-Ru(8-SMe2-1,2-C2B9H10)2] (4) and commo-[3,3'-Fe(8-SMe2-1,2-C2B9H10)2] (5) have been prepared by reaction of [10-SMe2-7,8-nido-C2B9H10]- with NiCl2 x 6 H2O, CoCl2, [RuCl2(dmso)4] and [FeCl2(dppe)], respectively. Reduction of 2+ with metallic Zn leads to the neutral and isolable complex commo-[3,3'-Co(8-SMe2-1,2-C2B9H10)2] (3). Theoretical calculations using the ZINDO/1 semiempirical method show three energy minima for complexes 1-3 and 5 that agree with the presence of three different rotamers in solution at low temperature, while four relative energy minima have…

Melatonin reduces inflammatory response in human intestinal epithelial cells stimulated by interleukin‐1β

2019

Melatonin is the main secretory product of the pineal gland, and it is involved in the regulation of periodic events. A melatonin production independent of the photoperiod is typical of the gut. However, the local physiological role of melatonin at the intestinal tract is poorly characterized. In this study, we evaluated the anti-inflammatory activities of melatonin in an in vitro model of inflamed intestinal epithelium. To this purpose, we assessed different parameters usually associated with intestinal inflammation using IL-1 beta-stimulated Caco-2 cells. Differentiated monolayers of Caco-2 cells were preincubated with melatonin (1 nmol/L-50 mu mol/L) and then exposed to IL-1 beta. After …

Quantum chemical simulation of excited states of chlorophylls, bacteriochlorophylls and their complexes

2006

The present review describes the use of quantum chemical methods in estimation of structures and electronic transition energies of photosynthetic pigments in vacuum, in solution and imbedded in proteins. Monomeric Mg-porphyrins, chlorophylls and bacteriochlorophylls and their solvent 1:1 and 1:2 complexes were studied. Calculations were performed for Mg-porphyrin, Mg-chlorin, Mg-bacteriochlorin, mesochlorophyll a, chlorophylls a, b, c(1), c(2), c(3), d and bacteriochlorophylls a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, plus several homologues. Geometries were optimised with PM3, PM3/CISD, PM5, ab initio HF (6-31G*/6-311G**) and density functional B3LYP (6-31G*/6-311G**) methods. Spectroscopic transition energ…

Alterations in striatal neuropeptide mRNA produced by repeated administration of L-DOPA, ropinirole or bromocriptine correlate with dyskinesia induct…

2002

Chronic administration of L-DOPA to MPTP-treated common marmosets induces marked dyskinesia while repeated administration of equivalent antiparkisonian doses of ropinirole and bromocriptine produces only mild involuntary movements. The occurrence of dyskinesia has been associated with an altered balance between the direct and indirect striatal output pathways. Using in situ hybridisation histochemistry, we now compare the effects of these drug treatments on striatal preproenkephalin-A (PPE-A) and adenosine A(2a) receptor mRNA expression as markers of the indirect pathway and striatal preprotachykinin (PPT) mRNA and preproenkephalin-B (PPE-B, prodynorphin) mRNA expression as markers of the d…

Fluorescent substituted amidines of benzanthrone: synthesis, spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations.

2012

Abstract Several new substituted amidine derivatives of benzanthrone were synthesized by a condensation reaction from 3-aminobenzo[de]anthracen-7-one and appropriate aromatic and aliphatic amides. The obtained derivatives have a bright yellow or orange fluorescence in organic solvents and in solid state. The novel benzanthrone derivatives were characterized by TLC analysis, 1H NMR, IR, MS, UV/vis, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The solvent effect on photophysical behaviors of these dyes was investigated, and the results showed that the Stoke’s shift increased, whereas quantum yield decreased with the growth of the solvent polarity. The structure of some dyes was confirmed by the X-ray singl…

Quantum Chemical Simulations of Excited-State Absorption Spectra of Photosynthetic Bacterial Reaction Center and Antenna Complexes

2011

The semiempirical ZINDO/S CIS configuration interaction method has been used to study the ground- and excited-state absorption spectra of wild type and heterodimer M202HL reaction centers from purple bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides as well as of peripheral LH2 and LH3 light harvesting complexes from purple bacterium Rhodopseudomonas acidophila. The calculations well reproduce the experimentally observed excited-state absorption spectra between 1000 and 17,000 cm(-1), despite the necessarily limited number of chromophores and protein subunits involved in the calculations. The electron density analysis reveals that the charge transfer between adjacent chromophores dominates the excited-stat…

Spectroscopic Properties of Mg−Chlorin, Mg−Bacteriochlorin, and Bacteriochlorophylls a, b, c, d, e, f, g, and h Studied by Semiempirical and Ab Initi…

2001

The semiempirical PM3 method has been used to calculate fully optimized structures of bacteriochlorophylls a, b, c, d, e, f, g, and h, magnesium−chlorin, and magnesium−bacteriochlorin. Several configuration interaction (CI) methods, the PM3 (5,5) CIS and CISD, ZINDO/S CIS (n,n) with 2 < n <30, and ab initio CIS (5,5)/6-31G* methods, were tested for their predictive power in estimation of spectroscopic properties of bacteriochlorophylls. The ZINDO/S CIS (15,15) method turned out the best results for overall simulation of absorption spectra. Both the transition energies and relative intensities of the Qy, Qx, and Soret bands were correctly predicted. The effect of solvent coordination on the …

Effects of ligand substitution on the excited state dynamics of the Ru(dcbpy)(CO)2I2 complex

2003

Abstract Spectroscopic evidence suggest [PCCP 3 (2001) 1992] that illumination with visible light of the [trans-I-Ru(dcbpy)(CO)2I2] (dcbpy= 4,4′-dicarboxy-2,2′-bipyridine) complex in solution induces dissociation of a CO group followed by reorganization of the ligands and attachment of a solvent molecule. In the present study, we report results on excited state dynamics of this ruthenium complex and its photoproduct. Femtosecond transient absorption measurements reveal dominance of excited state absorption of the reactant and the photoproduct [cis-I-Ru(dcbpy)(CO)(Sol)I2] (Sol=ethanol or acetonitrile) in the visible spectral region. The time-resolved measurements for the reactant at 77 K ind…

Controlling the electronic properties of polythiophene through the insertion of nonaromatic thienyl S,S-dioxide units

1999

A new class of thiophene-based polymers characterized by the presence of one nonaromatic thienyl S,S-dioxide moiety (O) to every two, four, and six aromatic thienyl units (T) was prepared from the newly synthesized precursors TOT, TTOTT, and TTTOTTT, and electrochemically characterized. The polymers displayed remarkably greater electron affinities than that of polythiophene and could be reversibly n-doped at moderate potentials, while still maintaining the property of also being p-doped at moderate potential values. All polymers were characterized by good p-doping/undoping cyclability, while at least four aromatic units to every nonaromatic one were needed to ensure good n-doping/undoping c…
