Optical data storage in Langmuir-Blodgett-Kuhn multilayer assemblies of azo-dye side chain LC-polymers

1991

We describe the preparation of LB-films of novel polymers containing azobenzene dye side chains. X-ray refection measurements, surface-plasmon experiments were used to determine the structure of LB-films which had been transferred onto a substrate. Illumination with UV-light causes trans-cis isomerisation of the azobenzene side groups. This effect can be used for optical data storage and will be discussed in detail.

Pyrolysis of Tall Oil-Derived Fatty and Resin Acid Mixtures

2012

Neutralised mixtures of tall oil-derived fatty acids and resin acids were separately pyrolysed (at 750∘C for 20 s) by pyrolysis gas chromatography with mass-selective and flame ionisation detection (Py-GC/MSD/FID) to clarify their thermochemical behaviour. The pyrolysate of fatty acid salts characteristically contained high amounts of unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons and minor amounts of monoaromatics, whereas the pyrolysis of resin acid salts mainly resulted in the formation of aromatics with up to three benzene rings and only in very low amounts of aliphatic hydrocarbons. The data obtained are useful when considering the suitability of various tall oil products containing fatty and resi…

Temperature and light sensitive copolymers containing azobenzene moieties prepared via a polymer analogous reaction

2009

Abstract Four different series of polyacrylamides containing different amounts of azobenzene moieties have been synthesized via a polymer analogous reaction of poly(pentafluorophenylacrylate) (PPFPA). All copolymers were designed to exhibit a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in aqueous solution, which was dependent on (i) the amount of incorporated chromophoric azobenzene groups and (ii) the isomerization state of the respective azobenzene group. Higher LCST values were measured for UV-irradiated solutions of the copolymers in comparison to the non-irradiated copolymer solutions. A maximum difference in the LCST of up to 7 °C was found for the copolymer poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide…

Life-time studies with capillary electrochromatography columns operated under different conditions.

2000

A test system has been established to permit the monitoring of the life-time performance of several reversed- phase capillary electrochromatography (CEC) columns. The retention factors, k(cec), peak symmetry coefficients, lambda(sym), and column efficiencies, N, of three neutral n-alkylbenzene analytes, namely ethyl-, n-butyl- and n-pentylbenzenes, were determined for Hypersil 3 microm n-octylsilica and n-octadecylsilica packed into CEC capillary columns of 100 microm I.D., with a packed length of 250 mm, and a total length of 335 mm. The performances of these CEC capillary columns were examined for a variety of eluents with pH values ranging between pH 2.0 - 8.0, similar to those employed …

Modelling retention and peak shape of small polar solutes analysed by nano-HPLC using methacrylate-based monolithic columns.

2019

Abstract The development of methacrylate-based monolithic columns was studied for the separation of pharmaceutical hydrophilic compounds in nano-liquid chromatography. The selected polymerisation mixture consisted of 7.5% hexyl methacrylate, 4.5% methacrylic acid and 18.0% ethylene dimethacrylate (w/w), in a binary porogenic solvent (35:35 w/w 1-propanol/1,4-butanediol). The polymer synthesised with this mixture has a good permeability, not excessive back-pressure, and reasonable retention times for polar and non-polar solutes. Monolithic columns (12 cm total capillary length, 100 μm i.d.), prepared with this mixture, were able to produce hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions, giv…

Headspace-Liquid Phase Microextraction for Attenuated Total Reflection Infrared Determination of Volatile Organic Compounds at Trace Levels

2010

A combination of headspace (HS) sampling and liquid phase microextraction (LPME) has been successfully developed to solve sensitivity problems in attenuated total reflection (ATR) infrared determination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The HS sampling facilitates the selective extraction of the target volatile analytes from the sample matrix, while the liquid phase microextraction allows their preconcentration prior to infrared analysis. The direct determination of extracted analytes in the acceptor solvent provides high preconcentration factors of the order of 200 with a reduced consumption of organic solvents and a minimum generation of wastes, being thus the developed methodology a …

Separation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons under isocratic conditions by a column switching technique

1994

A simple and efficient method of separating a 20-component PAH-mixture (RSM 1647 standard mixture +benzene, toluene, perylene and coronene) by RP-HPLC is described. Separation was by using two Superspher-100 RP-18 cartridges thermostatted at different temperatures under isocratic conditions with water-acetonitrile eluent. The analysis time with complete resolution of all components can be reduced to 15 min.

Preparation of monodisperse polyethylene oxides by gel permeation chromatography of discontinuous polymer-homologous series

1970

Abstract Starting from triethylene glycol, monodisperse polyethylene oxides of a molecular weight (MW) up to 2000 (degree of polymerisation (DP) During the first step the ditosylate of triethylene glycol is reacted with the sodium alkoxide of the same diol at room temperature. The condesation product (polymer homologues of triethylene glycol) was separated by molecular distillation and yielded the pure oligomers nonaethylene glycol (DP = 9, MW 414) and pentadecaethylene glycol (DP = 15, MW = 678), as proved by gel chromatography. During the next step the polymer homologues of nonaethylene glycol were synthesised in a similar way. The pure oligomers hepteicosa (DP = 27, MW = 1207) and pentat…

Determination of indoor air quality of a phytosanitary plant.

2011

A new methodology has been developed to determine volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and pesticides in ambient air using membrane based devices as passive samplers. Pesticides were determined by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry detection (GC-MS) after their microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) from the passive sampler and the required clean-up. On the other hand, VOCs were also caught with the same samplers and directly determined by head space (HS) coupled to GC-MS. The use of samplers filled with florisil and activated carbon allows us to catch with a simple device both, VOCs and pesticides, with a high vapor pressure. Results obtained in the deployment of samplers in different sit…

PNIPAM Copolymers Containing Light-Responsive Chromophores: A Method Toward Molecular Logic Gates

2010

A series of thermo-responsive PNIPAM copolymers containing different amounts of fulgimide moieties has been synthesized via a polymer analogous reaction of poly(pentafluorophenyl acrylate). All copolymers were designed to exhibit a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in water, which was only weakly dependent on the amount of incorporated chromophoric fulgimide groups. The copolymers showed a photocyclization of the fulgimide side groups upon irradiation with UV-light accompanied with a color change. The closed form of the chromophore had a halftime of 136 min for the visible reisomerization and did not affect the LCST of the polymer. This led to the realization of a logic "NOT A" for…
