Conclusions, Discussion, and Policy Implications
2016
Our research on Latvian older women challenges the trope of vulnerability which generally surrounds the framing of older migrants’ lives. Through their ability to be mobile, find work, and experience a sensual reawakening, Latvian older women are able to question stereotypes about ageing and older women. They are able to escape their poor, dead-end lives in Latvia and develop a better future for themselves. The findings of the book offer policymakers insights into the realities of ageing working migrants, pensions policy, a more inclusive transnational citizenship, the need for better working conditions, and ongoing care arrangements for older migrants post-retirement, either abroad or back…
Studies on pathways of ring opening of benzene in a Fenton system
1995
Ring-opened products of benzene metabolism have been postulated to play a role in hematotoxicity and leukemogenesis. The reaction of benzene in the Fenton system was reexamined to determine the presence of compounds which might serve as intermediates in the formation of trans, trans-muconaldehyde (MUC), a microsomal hematotoxic metabolite of benzene. Benzene dihydrodiol (DHD) was found in this system based on coelution with authentic standard, ultraviolet (UV) absorption characteristics, and molecular weight. Incubation of DHD in the Fenton system resulted in the formation of phenol (PH), catechol (CAT), and products which reacted with thiobarbituric acid to form chromogens absorbing at 495…

Freely available healthcare, universally accessible to the population of citizens, is a key ideal for European welfare systems. As labor migration of the twentieth century gave way to the globalized streams of the twenty-first century, new challenges to fulfilling these ideals have emerged. The principle of freedom of movement, together with large-scale forced migration have led to large scale movements of people, making new demands on European healthcare systems which had previously been largely focused on meeting sedentary local populations' needs. Drawing on interviews with service providers working for NGOs and public healthcare systems and with policy makers across 10 European countrie…
Uncertain sunset lives: British migrants facing Brexit in Spain
2020
One of the most concerned groups potentially impacted by the approval of Brexit in 2016 is that of the so-called “Brexpats”. This group of people is composed by at least 784,900 British citizens who are living in the European Union (EU), among which those settling in Spain are the most prominent. Spanish Brexpats are the largest British population outside the borders of the UK, except for in the Commonwealth territories. They have some peculiar characteristics, such as an advanced average age compared to other EU destinations; a large number of people living off the radar; geographical concentration within coastal areas; and a certain social isolation. In this context, the succession of new…
Empowering Media Citizenship through Educommunication
2014
Preparation of Thin-Film Frozen-Hydrated/ Vitrified Biological Specimens for Cryoelectron Microscopy
2003
2014
Purpose The removal of excessive melanin pigments that obscure ocular tissue morphology is important to address scientific questions and for differential diagnosis of ocular tumours based on histology. Thus, the goal of the present study was to establish an effective and fast melanin bleaching method for paraffin and frozen mouse and human ocular tissues. Methods Paraffin-embedded and frozen ocular specimens from mice and human donors were subjected to bleaching employing two methods. The first employed potassium permanganate (KMnO4) with oxalic acid, and the second 10% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). To determine optimal bleaching conditions, depigmentation was carried out at various incubation …
RETRACTILE MESENTERITIS MIMICKING AN ADRENAL TUMOR
1999
Retractile mesenteritis is a nonspecific inflammatory process involving the adipose tissue of the mesentery.1 It is a diagnostic challenge to identify this benign condition and, thus, avoid unnecessary surgery. Although approximately 100 cases have been published describing stomach and intestine involvement,z to our knowledge involvement of the urological organs has not been described previously. Consequently the urological literature lacks any information on this pathological entity. We report a rare case of retractile mesenteritis presenting as an adrenal tumor. were obtained and sent for frozen section, which revealed fibrotic tissue similar to retroperitoneal fibrosis. Due to the extens…
Immuno-fluorescence cytochemistry on thin frozen sections of human substantia nigra for staining of monoamine oxidase A and monoamine oxidase B: a pi…
1990
Immunofluorescence cytochemistry on thin frozen sections of human substantia nigra for staining of MAO-A and MAO-B revealed that only about 10% of the melanin-containing neurons are positive for MAO-A, while they are substantially free of MAO-B.
