To NATURE of Jan. 12, 1929, p. 49, Paul A. Anderson communicated some measurements of his on the potentials of single crystals of zinc. The investigation of a possible change of the electrochemical potential with the changing density of zinc atoms on different planes of the crystal was also the aim of an experimental research commenced in October 1928 in the Physicochemical Laboratory of the University of Latvia, in Riga, and is now in progress. Adsorption of Alcohols Onto Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) Crystal Surface

Adsorption behaviour of ZnSe, a popular material used in the manufacture of crystals for total internal reflectance techniques was studied for the adsorption of alcohols from dichloromethane solutions using infrared spectrometry. A series of n-alcohols were used in this study. The results show that the integrated area for the hydrogen bonded OH stretchings decrease and suggests that there is a continuous adsorption of alcohol molecules onto the ZnSe crystal by breaking the hydrogen bonds between alcohol molecules in solution.
Theoretical study of Zn and Cd interstitials and substitutional interstitials in CuInSe2 via hybrid functional calculations

We have investigated the formation of Zn and Cd interstitials in the CuInSe2 solar cell material via density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations by employing the HSE06 hybrid functional. The computed formation energies for Zn interstitials were in the range of 2.09-2.68 e V, and in the range of 2.04-2.25 eV for substitutional interstitials. In constrast, the formation energies of Cd interstitials and substitutional interstitials were between 1.85-2.75 eV and 2.41-2.64 eV, respectively. Thus, these results indicate, that Cd interstitials are more likely to be formed than Zn interstitials, and that in case of Zn inclusion into CuInSe2 Zn atoms will prefer to adopt substitutional interstitial…

Three recently prepared tridentate ligands TPF, TPS and TPT, based on the triazolopyridine–pyridine nucleus possessing fluorescent properties, have been tested as chemosensors for metal ions. A particular response is obtained in the case of ZnTPT+2. The Zn2+ TPT 1 : 1 complex has proved to be an efficient chemosensor for anions especially nitrite and cyanide.

International audience; This paper describes the synthesis of the (thiocyanato-N)(meso-tetratolylporphyrinato)zinc(II) chlorobenzene monosolvate complex with the formula [K(2,2,2-crypt)][Zn(TTP)(NCS)]·C6H5Cl (I) using the cryptand-222 to solubilize potassium thiocyanate in chlorobenzene solvent. Complex (I) has been characterized by elementary analysis, IR, UV–vis, 1H NMR and MS, and the structure of this new zinc(II) metalloporphyrin been examined crystallographically. Biomarkers in the earthworm Aporrectodea tuberculata (Eisen) were measured to find out their possible induction under Cu and Zn exposure and differences in the responses between two populations with different exposure history. The biomarkers applied were concentration of metallothioneins (MT), and cytochrome P4501A (CYP1A) monooxygenase and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities. The marine sponge Suberites domuncula was used as a bioindicator to study the effects of cadmium on the occurrence of DNA strand breakage and on the induction of the expression of the stress biomarkers, heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78) homolog. The cDNA encoding GRP78 homolog from S. domuncula was isolated and characterized. The GRP78 cDNA has a length of 2.1 kb and displays characteristic features of the HSP70 family ; it encodes an aa sequence of M-r 72, 000. Larvae homozygous for the recessive lethal allele without children(rgl) (woc(rgl)) fail to pupariate. Application of exogenous 20-hydroxyecdysone elicits puparium formation and pupation. Ecdysteroid titer measurements on mutant larvae show an endocrine deficiency in the brain-ring gland complex, which normally synthesizes ecdysone, resulting in a failure of the larvae to achieve a threshold whole body hormone titer necessary for molting. Ultrastructural investigation revealed extensive degeneration of the prothoracic cells of the ring gland in older larvae. The click chemistry synthesis and photophysical properties, notably photo-induced energy and electron transfers between the central core and the peripheral chromophores of a series of artificial special pair-dendron systems (dendron = G1, G2, G3; Gx = zinc(II) tetra-meso-arylporphyrin-containing polyimides) built upon a central core of dimethylxanthenebis(metal(II) porphyrin) (metal = zinc, copper), are reported. The retention forces of a newly developed compomer cement (Dyract Cem), a glass ionomer cement (Ketac Cem Aplicap), and a resin cement (F21) were examined.Cemented cast gold crowns were removed along the path of insertion with a Zwick universal testing device.
